Choose the disc-equipped PS5 if you want to play supported PS5 or PS4 games from discs, watch movies on physical discs, or keep the option to use optical media. Choose the PS5 Digital Edition if you expect to download your games and do not need a disc drive. Sony’s US lineup lists 1TB of storage for the disc-equipped PS5 and 825GB for the Digital Edition; those are listed capacities, not estimates of usable space or how many games either console can hold.

What actually differs between the disc and digital PS5?

The main difference is access to physical media. Sony says its disc-equipped PS5 plays PS5 and PS4 games on Blu-ray discs and also supports digital downloads. The Digital Edition has no built-in disc drive and downloads games from PlayStation Store. Both models can therefore play downloaded games; the disc-equipped model adds the option to use discs. Sony’s US PS5 buying page lists the formats and capacities.

Decision point Disc-equipped PS5 PS5 Digital Edition
Game format Digital downloads and supported PS5 and PS4 game discs Digital downloads; no built-in disc drive
Movie discs Optical-disc playback Requires a compatible, separately sold drive for optical playback
Sony-listed storage 1TB 825GB
Adding a drive later Drive is already included Possible only for specified console model groups, using a separate drive that must be paired online during setup

The storage figures are Sony’s listed capacities. They do not establish usable storage or translate into a guaranteed number of installed games. Check the current listing for your region before comparing prices or deciding whether the capacity suits your library.

When the disc-equipped PS5 makes more sense

You already own physical games

If you have PS5 or supported PS4 games on Blu-ray discs, a disc-capable setup lets you use that library. Check compatibility for any particular game rather than assuming every disc works. A Digital Edition cannot read those discs unless it is one of the compatible models and you add Sony’s separate drive.

You want the option to use movie discs

Consider whether you actually watch movies on Blu-ray, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, or DVD. Sony specifies those formats for its removable Disc Drive. If optical movies are part of your setup, a built-in drive avoids needing to add a separate accessory to a compatible Digital Edition.

You prefer having a physical-media option

Buying or borrowing discs may be part of how you choose games. The disc-equipped PS5 keeps that option alongside downloads. The cited specifications establish disc playback, but do not establish that every game can be resold, lent, played offline, or will cost less on disc.

When the PS5 Digital Edition makes more sense

The Digital Edition is a straightforward fit if you plan to download games, do not need movie discs, and are comfortable with Sony’s listed 825GB capacity. Its lack of a built-in drive is the key trade-off; it does not prevent digital purchases, which the disc-equipped PS5 supports too.

Do not assume the Digital Edition is always cheaper or better value. Prices, bundles, and local availability change, and the listed specifications alone do not establish a price advantage. Compare the current local price and the storage listing for the exact model you are considering.

Can you add a disc drive to a PS5 Digital Edition later?

Yes, but only if the console belongs to a compatible model group. Sony lists its removable Disc Drive for Digital Edition slim models in the CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 groups, as well as PS5 Pro models in the CFI-7000 group. The drive is sold separately; it is not included with those Digital Edition consoles or with PS5 Pro.

  1. Check the model number. Find the console’s model number and verify it against Sony’s Disc Drive compatibility information. Do not rely on the “Digital Edition” name alone.
  2. Confirm the current setup instructions. Sony’s Disc Drive setup guide covers compatible model groups and installation.
  3. Plan to connect to the internet during pairing. Sony requires an internet connection to pair the drive during setup.

Sony says the removable drive supports PS5 and supported PS4 game discs, along with 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD discs. Check Sony’s current compatibility and setup information before buying an accessory.

Is PS5 Pro a disc-versus-digital choice?

Not exactly. PS5 Pro is a separate performance tier: Sony lists 2TB of storage and enhanced visual features in supported games. Its compatible removable disc drive is a separate purchase. Decide first whether you want PS5 Pro’s performance features; then consider whether you also need a disc drive. Sony notes that Pro enhancements vary by game, so do not assume every title benefits in the same way.

What Sony says about new games from January 2028

Sony’s US buying page currently states: “From Jan. 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only.” It also says: “Discs for games released before Jan. 2028 can continue to be played on this console.” This is a future-dated statement on Sony’s live product page; check the page again before making a purchase based on what will be available after that date. The statement does not, by itself, establish further details about the policy.

Make the choice in three questions

  1. Do you own or expect to use game discs? If yes, choose a disc-equipped PS5 or verify that a Digital Edition you already own is compatible with Sony’s separate drive.
  2. Do you watch movies on optical discs? If yes, choose a disc-capable setup and check the supported formats.
  3. Are downloads enough for you? If yes, and the current listed capacity and local price work for you, the Digital Edition is the simpler match.
