There is no universal long-run winner. In the United States, Sony’s recommended prices effective April 2, 2026 put the PS5 with a disc drive at $649.99 and the PS5 Digital Edition at $599.99, a $50 difference before tax. The Digital Edition is therefore cheaper to buy initially. The Disc Edition can become the better value if you already own PS4 or PS5 discs, regularly find physical games below their digital prices, or sell and trade games after playing them.
No official source establishes an average lifetime saving or a guaranteed break-even number of games. The answer depends on your country, the games you actually buy, promotions, taxes, used-game availability, resale habits, and whether you would ever add a drive to the Digital Edition. Compare the total cost of the same game library over the period you expect to own the console.

Sony announced these US recommended prices for April 2, 2026:

| PS5 Digital Edition | $599.99 | $599 for the 825 GB model | No built-in drive; compatible drive sold separately |
The $50 gap is a US reference, not a worldwide rule. Sony listed separate prices for other territories, and local currency, taxes, retailer pricing, bundles and promotions can change the difference. The October 13 PlayStation Direct figures are live catalog prices, not a promise that every retailer has the same price or that a bundle includes the same accessories and games.

Use one date, one country and equivalent bundle contents when you compare. A discounted Digital Edition bundle against a full-price Disc Edition is not a meaningful long-term comparison, nor is a 1 TB model against a different storage tier unless you have included the value of that difference.
In the March 27, 2026 price announcement, Isabelle Tomatis, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Vice President of Global Marketing, said: “With continued pressures in the global economic landscape, we’ve made the decision to increase the prices of PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal globally.” That announcement explains why an older price comparison may no longer describe what you pay today.
What the two consoles let you do
PS5 with a disc drive
The standard Disc Edition accepts PS5 and PS4 Blu-ray game discs. Sony’s support information also lists Blu-ray and DVD video playback. A disc must be inserted when the console needs to verify a physical game license, so owning the disc is not the same as having the game installed without the disc.

The drive gives you several acquisition routes: new retail discs, used discs, borrowed discs, gifts, and discs you already own. It does not guarantee that any of those routes will be cheaper than a PlayStation Store sale. Physical prices vary by title, retailer, condition, shipping and timing.
PS5 Digital Edition
Sony describes the Digital Edition as an all-digital console without a disc drive. Games are downloaded or accessed digitally, so a PS4 or PS5 disc in your possession cannot be used by the console in its original form. You buy a digital license, download a game, or access it through a digital service according to that service’s terms.
The US product listing identifies the slim Digital Edition as model CFI-2100. Confirm the exact model and bundle before buying because compatibility with an add-on drive is model-dependent.
Adding a drive later
Sony sells a separate Disc Drive for compatible PS5 Digital Edition slim consoles and PS5 Pro consoles. A compatible Digital Edition can therefore gain disc functionality after purchase. Sony’s product information confirms the compatible use, but the price and stock of the accessory are not established here and can change. Check the current price, availability and your console’s model number before treating a later upgrade as part of the budget.
For a fair comparison, calculate both of these possibilities:
- Digital Edition by itself, for someone who will remain digital-only.
- Digital Edition plus the drive, for someone who wants physical-game access later.
If the second configuration is your real plan, compare its complete cost with the Disc Edition rather than comparing the console prices alone.
How to calculate your personal break-even point
Think of the Disc Edition’s extra cost as buying optionality. Its long-run value is the money you can actually recover or avoid spending because the drive lets you use physical media. A useful calculation is:
Net Disc Edition advantage = physical-game savings + net resale or trade proceeds + value of existing discs you can use − Disc Edition premium − drive or transaction costs
For a Digital Edition that may receive a drive, replace the Disc Edition premium with the price difference between the two complete configurations. Do not enter a drive price until you have checked the current local listing.
Step 1: Fix the comparison period
Choose a realistic ownership period, such as the time until you expect to replace the console. You can use one year, three years or the life of the machine, but use the same period for both models. A short ownership period emphasizes the initial $50; a longer period gives game prices and resale more opportunity to matter.
Step 2: List the games you will actually buy
Write down the specific PS5 and PS4 titles you expect to acquire during that period. Include games you already own on disc and intend to play. Avoid a theoretical list of every release: a game you would never purchase cannot create a saving.
For every title, record the price you would realistically pay in your country and on the same date for each format. Include sales tax, delivery charges, marketplace fees and any required membership cost. If a physical copy is used, record its condition and shipping cost rather than comparing a used disc with a full-price digital edition.

Step 3: Record your actual buying pattern
Separate your list into categories:
- New physical releases bought near launch.
- Used physical games bought after prices fall.
- Digital games bought at full price.
- Digital games bought during sales.
- Games accessed through a subscription or other entitlement.
- PS4 discs already in your collection.
Then estimate how many purchases in each category you genuinely make each year. The Disc Edition is useful only where a disc is available and where you would choose it. A buyer who waits for deep digital sales may pay less digitally even though a physical version exists.
Step 4: Count resale and trade money conservatively
Physical ownership can produce money after you finish a game, but use the amount you would actually receive, not the original retail price or a seller’s asking price. Subtract marketplace fees, postage, travel and the value of your time. If you keep nearly every disc, enter no resale proceeds. If you routinely trade games, use your own observed net proceeds rather than an assumed industry average; no typical resale amount is established by the available evidence.
Step 5: Assign value to your existing discs
Existing PS4 discs are a major reason to consider the Disc Edition. Sony says more than 99 percent of the 4,000-plus PS4 games are playable on PS5. That is a compatibility statistic, not a savings statistic, but it means a large existing library may remain useful without buying digital replacements. A disc-equipped console is required to use those PS4 discs; eligible digital purchases are accessed digitally.
Give each existing disc a practical value: the cost of buying the same game again digitally, the price you would otherwise pay for a replacement, or zero if you would not play it again. Do not count a game merely because it is on your shelf if you have no intention of using it.

Add the console price, every game purchase, taxes and delivery, the cost of any drive, and subtract only resale or trade proceeds you expect to receive. Perform the calculation twice: once using the Disc Edition and once using the Digital Edition. The lower total for your actual basket is your personal long-run winner.
Rank #2
Where the Disc Edition can earn back its premium
Existing PS4 and PS5 discs
If you already own a substantial disc library, the drive can prevent repurchasing games digitally. This benefit is immediate: you do not need to wait for a future sale or find a particular used copy. It is strongest when the discs are for games you still want to play and when a digital replacement would otherwise be expensive.
Check each game individually. Compatibility is broad, but “more than 99 percent of the 4,000-plus PS4 games” is not a promise that every title, add-on, peripheral or save-transfer behavior is identical. Verify unusual or heavily accessory-dependent games before assigning them full value.
Used and discounted physical games
Physical copies can fall in price through retailer clearance, used-game stores, local marketplaces or temporary promotions. The drive gives you access to those channels. However, the advantage is the difference between the physical price you can actually obtain and the digital price available at the same time, after shipping and tax. Some digital sales will be cheaper than new or used discs; some physical games will be cheaper than their digital counterparts.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Resale and trading
A buyer who completes a game and sells it can reduce the net cost of ownership. The reduction depends on how quickly the game is sold, its condition, demand, platform, fees and shipping. Trading may return store credit rather than cash, so count it according to what you would really use. Someone who keeps games permanently receives no such offset.
Borrowing and lending
A disc drive can make a library shared with family or friends more useful, subject to the publisher’s license terms and the owner’s willingness to lend it. Do not assign a monetary saving unless borrowing is a regular, realistic part of your buying pattern.
When the Digital Edition is cheaper over time
You buy almost everything during digital sales
Digital sales can undercut physical copies, especially when you buy from home, avoid shipping and wait for recurring promotions. In that case, the lower console price remains an advantage and the Disc Edition’s optionality may never repay its premium.
You rarely buy games
If most of your play time comes from a subscription, free-to-play titles, or a small number of purchases, there are fewer transactions in which a physical price difference can recover $50. Use your actual annual purchase count rather than assuming that every owner buys many games.

A digital-first buyer with no existing disc library and no interest in used games or trade-ins may receive little practical value from the drive. The Digital Edition’s lower entry price can remain the lower total even after several years, depending on local digital pricing.
You value convenience more than format choice
Digital games can be purchased and downloaded without changing discs. That convenience is not a cash saving, but it can be decisive for a buyer who never wants physical media. Include the preference in your decision, while keeping the financial comparison based on prices you can document.

On July 1, 2026, Sony announced that production of physical discs for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting in January 2028. The announcement says new games will be available in digital formats through the PlayStation Store and retailers.
This policy changes the assumptions behind a long ownership calculation: the supply of new first-party or third-party disc releases may narrow after that date. It does not say that existing PS4 or PS5 discs stop working, that your disc drive becomes unusable, or that every game will immediately lose a physical option. Continue to value existing discs, used copies and any releases that remain available, but do not project today’s physical-release pattern indefinitely.
For a console bought before 2028, model two periods if the policy affects your buying habits: the games you expect to buy before January 2028 and the digital-heavy purchases you expect afterward. The announcement alone does not provide a future price list, so do not assume that digital games will be cheaper or more expensive because of the format change.
Decision guide by buyer type
| If this describes you | Which model usually deserves priority | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You own PS4 discs you still intend to play | Disc Edition | The drive lets you use those discs; a Digital Edition cannot read them without a compatible separately purchased drive. |
| You buy used or discounted physical games and resell them | Disc Edition, if your net differences exceed the premium | Physical channels and resale can offset the higher console price, but only your local basket proves whether they do. |
| You buy nearly everything digitally during sales | Digital Edition | You pay less initially and may not create enough physical-price savings to recover the difference. |
| You are undecided about physical games | Compare the Disc Edition with a Digital Edition plus the current compatible-drive price | The upgrade option has value only after you verify compatibility, price and stock. |
| You are buying mainly for new releases after 2028 | Base the decision on your actual digital and physical options at purchase time | Sony’s announced production change may reduce the number of new disc releases, but it does not establish future game prices. |
Checks to make before paying
- Country and currency: Replace the US figures with the price in your market, including taxes.
- Model and storage: Match generation, storage tier, bundle contents and warranty. The October 13 US catalog listed 1 TB for the Disc Edition and 825 GB for the Digital Edition.
- Drive compatibility: Confirm that a slim Digital Edition is a compatible model before budgeting for the separate drive.
- Drive price and stock: Check the current listing; the price and availability are not fixed by the compatibility announcement.
- Game prices on one date: Compare the same titles, editions and condition at the same time.
- All-in costs: Add tax, delivery, marketplace fees and any subscription cost that differs between your choices.
- Resale reality: Use net cash or credit you have actually received, not optimistic asking prices.
- Future release assumptions: Treat January 2028 as a change to new-disc production, not a shutdown of existing discs.
Common comparison mistakes
Assuming every disc is cheaper
Physical and digital prices move independently. A store clearance may beat a digital list price, while a PlayStation Store sale may beat a new or used disc after delivery. Compare title by title.
Using the console list price against selective game deals
Do not compare the Digital Edition’s regular price with a handful of unusually cheap discs, or the Disc Edition’s regular price with only expensive digital purchases. Use the same basket and the same timeframe.
Ignoring an existing library
Leaving your PS4 discs out of the calculation can make the Digital Edition appear cheaper than it is for you. Conversely, counting discs you will never play exaggerates the Disc Edition’s value.
Treating the add-on drive as free insurance
A future drive is a separate purchase with its own price and stock risk. If you think you may need one, include its current local cost in the Digital Edition scenario and verify that your exact console is compatible.
Interpreting the 2028 announcement too broadly
The announcement concerns production of discs for new PlayStation games beginning in January 2028. It does not establish that existing discs will stop functioning or that all physical copies will disappear immediately.
Bottom line for the long-run question
At the US prices checked in October 2026, the Digital Edition starts $50 cheaper than the Disc Edition. Choose it when your purchases are overwhelmingly digital, you do not need an existing disc library, and your local digital deals make the lower upfront cost decisive.
Choose the Disc Edition when you already own PS4 or PS5 discs, regularly buy physical games at prices below comparable digital offers, or reliably resell and trade games. Its advantage is flexibility rather than a guaranteed discount. If you may add a drive to a Digital Edition, compare the complete upgraded cost and verify the current accessory price first.
