If your PS5 won’t read a disc, first confirm that your console has a compatible disc drive and that the disc is a supported format. Then check how it is inserted, clean it if needed, and test another supported disc. These low-risk checks can help distinguish a problem with one disc from a console-level fault before you change software settings or request service.
The useful questions are: “Why won’t my PS5 read a disc?”, “Is my PS5 Digital Edition compatible with a disc drive?”, “Which way does the disc go in a vertical PS5?”, and “What disc formats can PS5 play?” The answers depend on your console’s model group, the type and condition of the disc, and whether the console fails to read a disc or cannot detect a drive at all.
Check your PS5 model and disc-drive compatibility first
A disc-drive problem can begin with a mismatch between the console and the drive, not with the disc itself. Before buying or attaching an add-on drive, find the model number on your console and compare its model group with Sony’s compatibility guidance. Do not rely only on a product name such as “PS5 Digital Edition”: the Digital Edition label covers consoles with different drive compatibility.
| Console model group | Disc-drive compatibility | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| CFI-1000 Digital Edition | Does not support disc-based games or media, according to Sony’s media guide. | Do not assume an add-on drive can make this model read discs. |
| CFI-2000 Digital Edition | A separately sold CFI-ZDD1 drive can be added. | Confirm the model group before purchasing or starting setup. |
| CFI-2000 or CFI-7000 | Sony identifies the CFI-ZDD1 add-on drive as compatible with these model groups. | Check the specific console model and Sony’s setup instructions before installing. |
The labels “Digital Edition” and “PS5” alone are not enough to establish compatibility: Sony’s guide distinguishes the original CFI-1000 Digital Edition from later model groups. The CFI-ZDD1 is a model-specific add-on drive, not a universal replacement for a failed built-in drive. If you are comparing a console and a separately sold drive, check both the console’s model number and Sony’s compatibility instructions before buying; matching the general PS5 name is not enough. See Sony’s PS5 disc-drive setup instructions and disc and media compatibility guide.

Install an eligible add-on drive safely
Sony’s setup procedure requires the console to be turned off, unplugged, and cool before installation. The drive clips into place beneath the appropriate console cover, and an internet connection is required to pair the drive with the console during setup. Follow the instructions for your console’s model group and cover; do not force the drive or attempt installation while the console is powered or warm.
Pairing is part of setup, so plan to have internet access available rather than assuming the drive can be set up entirely offline. If a drive is not detected after setup, distinguish that symptom from a disc that the console detects but cannot read. The former is a drive-detection issue; the latter may involve disc format, insertion, or condition. Those symptoms lead to different Sony guidance later in this article.
Check whether the disc format is supported
A disc fitting into the slot does not mean the PS5 can play it. Sony lists Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD playback, but excludes several types of optical media. A burned or otherwise unsupported disc may not work even when it is clean and inserted correctly. In other words, “What disc formats can PS5 play?” has a narrower answer than “Which discs physically fit?”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Media | PS5 guidance |
|---|---|
| Ultra HD Blu-ray | Supported. |
| Blu-ray | Supported formats include BD-ROM and BD-R/RE, subject to Sony’s listed exceptions. |
| DVD | Supported formats include DVD-ROM, DVD-R/RW, and DVD+R/RW variants. A recorded DVD must be finalized. |
| CDs, including audio CDs | Not supported. |
| Burned discs | PS5 consoles cannot play burned discs, according to Sony’s troubleshooting guidance. |
| Other excluded formats | Sony lists BD-RE version 1.0, BD-R/RE XL, and unfinalized DVDs as unsupported. |
There are physical-disc restrictions, too. Sony warns against using 8 cm discs, non-circular discs, cracked or deformed discs, repaired discs, and discs with stickers or paper labels. Even a supported, properly formatted disc can fail because of scratches, dirt, recording quality, or characteristics of the device that recorded it. That means a recorded disc can have more than one possible obstacle: it must be a supported format, and any DVD that requires finalization must have been finalized. For Sony’s full format guidance, see its media compatibility page. Its troubleshooting page states: “PS5 consoles can’t play burned discs or audio CDs.”

If the disc is a CD, a burned disc, one of the listed Blu-ray exceptions, or an unfinalized DVD, repeated cleaning or software changes will not make it a supported type. Check the format first so that you do not mistake expected incompatibility for a drive fault.
Try these low-risk checks in order
After each check, reinsert the disc and see whether the PS5 recognizes it. Start with insertion and condition rather than changing system software. Work through the checks one at a time: that makes it easier to tell whether orientation, visible dirt, or a particular disc is associated with the problem.
- Check orientation. When the PS5 is vertical on its stand, insert the disc with its label side facing left. If you are unsure which side is the label, check before inserting rather than trying repeatedly. If the console is horizontal, consult the model-specific instructions for the correct orientation rather than applying the vertical rule.
- Look for dirt, fingerprints, or scratches. Handle the disc by its edge and avoid touching the reading surface. For visible dirt or fingerprints, use a clean, lint-free cloth made for Blu-ray Discs or DVDs. Wipe from the center toward the edge, not in a circular motion. Cleaning may remove dirt; it cannot be relied on to repair scratches.
- Test a different supported disc. Try another supported game, Blu-ray, or DVD. Make sure this second disc is itself in a supported format and in good condition. A CD or burned disc is not a useful comparison because the PS5 does not support those types.
- Compare the results. If one disc fails but another supported disc works, focus first on the problem disc’s format, finalization where applicable, and physical condition. If several supported discs fail, move on to console-level guidance. This comparison is a useful clue, not a definitive hardware diagnosis.
Sony’s basic disc-reading sequence and cleaning advice are on its PS5 disc troubleshooting page. If the console displays an error code, note it before proceeding: the code can point to a different issue than a single scratched or incompatible disc.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →When examining a disc, look for fingerprints, smudges, dirt, and scratches, but do not assume that a clean-looking disc is compatible. Format and condition are separate checks. Similarly, if one supported disc plays and another does not, that comparison makes a disc-specific issue more plausible, but it does not prove the console is fault-free. If multiple supported discs fail, record which types you tried and whether an error appeared; that information can help you follow the appropriate support instructions.

Use the right guidance for the symptom or error code
Disc-read failure: CE-110538-8
Sony describes CE-110538-8 as a failed Blu-ray read. Its recommended checks are to look for fingerprints, smudges, or scratches, confirm that the disc is inserted correctly, and test another disc. If the error continues, Sony directs users to PlayStation support or Repairs. Follow the CE-110538-8 support instructions rather than treating the code as proof that the disc drive needs replacement.
This is a read failure, so begin with the disc checks: insertion, visible condition, and a second disc. If only one disc triggers the code, its format or condition remains relevant. If the problem persists across discs, continue with Sony’s instructions and seek support rather than deciding on your own that the hardware must be replaced.
Drive not detected: SU-101312-8
SU-101312-8 is different: Sony describes it as an error in which the console cannot detect a Blu-ray drive. The troubleshooting steps for this detection problem are not a general checklist for every disc that fails to read. Sony’s instructions include turning off and unplugging the console, restarting the router after waiting five minutes, restarting the console, deleting and retrying the update file, and then considering a console reset if the problem remains. Use Sony’s SU-101312-8 guidance for the sequence and update-file details. A reset erases stored console data, so do not treat it as a routine first step.

When to try Safe Mode software options
If the format, orientation, condition, and second-disc checks do not resolve an ongoing reading problem, Sony lists Clear Cache and Rebuild Database among the Safe Mode options to try. Its troubleshooting sequence places Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) after Rebuild Database if the problem persists. These are progressively more disruptive software steps; they are not substitutes for confirming that the media and drive are compatible.
Pay particular attention to the reset warning: Sony says Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) deletes all information on the console. Before proceeding, use Sony’s instructions for backing up data and reinstalling system software, and make sure you understand what will be erased. The Safe Mode choices and their sequence are described on Sony’s disc troubleshooting page. Do not jump directly to a reset just because one disc does not work.
For a persistent disc-reading problem, the order matters: rule out an unsupported or damaged disc, check orientation and cleanliness, compare with another supported disc, then consider Sony’s listed Safe Mode options. A full reset and system-software reinstallation comes later in Sony’s sequence, and it is a data-erasing step rather than a routine test. Read Sony’s backup and reinstallation instructions before choosing it.

Decide what to do from the results
- The console is an incompatible model for an add-on drive: do not buy or install the CFI-ZDD1 on the assumption that every Digital Edition supports it. Verify the exact model group against Sony’s setup and media guides.
- The disc is an unsupported type: use supported physical media. A CD, burned disc, unfinalized DVD, or one of Sony’s other listed exceptions will not become compatible through cleaning or a software change.
- Only one supported disc fails: inspect that disc’s condition and format, including whether a recorded DVD has been finalized. A second disc working makes a disc-specific cause more plausible, but does not conclusively rule out a console issue.
- Several supported discs fail to read: follow the disc-reading guidance, including the Safe Mode options in Sony’s sequence, and seek support if the issue persists.
- The console cannot detect the drive, or a relevant error persists: use the instructions for the specific detection or read error and contact PlayStation support or Repairs if Sony’s steps do not resolve it.
Keeping the distinctions clear—model group, drive installation, media format, one-disc versus multiple-disc failure, and read failure versus drive detection—helps avoid a reset or repair request for a problem that is actually an incompatible console or disc. If a problem remains after the relevant Sony steps, PlayStation support or Repairs is the appropriate next stop; the symptoms alone are not enough to identify a replacement part.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is my PS5 Digital Edition compatible with a disc drive?
It depends on the model group. Sony says the original CFI-1000 Digital Edition does not support disc-based games or media. A separately sold CFI-ZDD1 drive can be added to CFI-2000 model-group Digital Edition consoles, and Sony identifies the drive as compatible with CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 model groups. Check your console’s exact model number before buying.
Which way does the disc go in a vertical PS5?
When the console is vertical on its stand, Sony’s troubleshooting guidance says to insert the disc with the label side facing left. Reinsert the disc after checking orientation.
What disc formats can PS5 play?
Sony lists Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD playback, including BD-ROM, BD-R/RE formats subject to listed exceptions, and DVD-ROM, DVD-R/RW, and DVD+R/RW variants. CDs, burned discs, BD-RE version 1.0, BD-R/RE XL, and unfinalized DVDs are not supported.
Why won’t my PS5 read a disc even though it fits?
A disc fitting the slot does not establish compatibility. Check that it is a supported format, inserted in the right orientation, and free of dirt or fingerprints. Avoid cracked, deformed, repaired, labeled, non-circular, or 8 cm discs. Then test another supported disc to compare results.
Should I reset my PS5 if it will not read a disc?
Not as an early routine step. First check the model and drive, format, orientation, disc condition, and a second supported disc. Sony lists Clear Cache and Rebuild Database among Safe Mode options before Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software). Sony warns that the reset deletes all information on the console, so review its backup and reinstallation instructions before proceeding.
What if the PS5 cannot detect its Blu-ray drive?
That is different from detecting a drive but failing to read a disc. For error SU-101312-8, follow Sony’s specific instructions, which include power and unplug steps, a router restart after waiting five minutes, restarting the console, and retrying the update file. Do not use those steps as a general checklist for every disc-read problem.
The Bottom Line
Before changing software settings or requesting repair, confirm that your PS5 model supports its drive, verify that the disc format is supported, check its orientation and condition, and compare it with another supported disc. Use Sony’s specific guidance for a read error or a drive-detection error; leave a full reset until later because it erases console information.
