Short answer: Sony’s detachable PS5 Disc Drive (the CFI-ZDD1 series) works with PS5 consoles in the CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 model groups. It is a separately purchased accessory, and an internet connection is required to pair it with the console during setup. Sony says the CFI-1000 PS5 Digital Edition model group does not support disc-based games or media, so identifying your console’s model group is the first step before you buy.
Use Sony’s illustrated PS5 disc-drive setup instructions for the cover, stand-foot, and clip orientation. The text below explains what to check, what the installation involves, and which buying assumptions can lead to an incompatible purchase.
Compatibility comes before price
The detachable drive is not a universal upgrade for every PS5 Digital Edition. Sony’s published compatibility information separates the supported newer model groups from the original Digital Edition group. Match the model number printed on your console to the group in the table before checking retailers.

| PS5 model group | Detachable CFI-ZDD1 drive | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| CFI-2000 Digital Edition | Supported | The console can be fitted with Sony’s separately sold drive and used with supported discs after setup and pairing. |
| CFI-7000 | Supported | Sony lists this model group as compatible with the CFI-ZDD1 series. |
| CFI-1000 Digital Edition | Not supported | Sony says this model group does not support disc-based games or media; the detachable drive is not an upgrade path for it. |
The model-group distinction is more important than the words “Digital Edition” on a retailer listing. Two consoles may both be described as digital models while belonging to different CFI groups with different accessory support. Do not order from a listing that only says “PS5 Digital” without confirming the CFI group.

How to identify your PS5 model
Find the model number on the console itself and compare its CFI group with Sony’s compatibility information. The relevant part is the CFI-1000, CFI-2000, or CFI-7000 group, not merely the retail name or storage-capacity description.
- Inspect the labels on your console for the model number.
- Read the CFI group at the start of that number.
- Use Sony’s disc and media support page and the setup instructions to confirm that your group is listed.
- Only then compare the CFI-ZDD1 drive’s current price, stock, seller, and return terms.
If the label is difficult to read, take a clear photograph and enlarge it rather than guessing from the console’s color, bundle name, or the year you bought it. A retailer’s compatibility statement should agree with Sony’s model-group information; if it does not, treat the listing as a reason to pause, not as proof that the drive will work.
What you are buying
Sony identifies the accessory as the CFI-ZDD1 series and states that it is sold separately. A PS5 Digital Edition box should not be assumed to include the drive, even when the console is one of the compatible groups. Check the exact contents and model number in the retailer’s current listing before payment.
Recommended Free Tools
Because price and availability change, verify those details at the retailer at the time you buy. The official support pages establish compatibility and use, but they do not establish a permanent worldwide price, inventory level, seller, or return policy. Those terms can also differ by country and by retailer.
Do you need internet access?
Yes. Sony’s setup instructions state: “Internet connection required to pair disc drive and PS5 console upon set up.” Pairing is part of the initial installation, so plan to place the console somewhere it can connect to the internet before you begin.
The requirement is specifically tied to pairing the drive and console during setup. It is not evidence that every later disc playback session requires an internet connection. Sony’s statement does not provide a broader offline-use rule, so do not promise one for a particular game, film, account, or region.
If you cannot connect the console to the internet at the time of installation, postpone the installation until you can. Buying the hardware first does not remove the pairing requirement.
Prepare the console and workspace
Installation involves removing an external cover and the short horizontal stand feet, attaching the drive, and replacing the cover. Prepare the work area before moving the console.

- Turn the PS5 off completely.
- Disconnect the AC power cord and the other cables.
- Wait for the console to cool.
- Place it on a flat surface covered with a soft cloth.
- Keep the original cover and the removed stand feet nearby instead of discarding them.
The cloth and flat surface reduce the chance of scratching the console while it is positioned for cover removal. Cooling and disconnecting power are part of Sony’s sequence; do not work on a powered, warm console simply because the installation appears quick.
Install the detachable drive: the official sequence
Sony provides illustrations for the exact cover shape, clip locations, and drive orientation. Use those images for every physical step. A text description cannot show the orientation of the clips as reliably as the official diagrams.
- Shut down and disconnect. Turn off the PS5, remove the AC power cord, and disconnect the remaining cables.
- Allow it to cool. Wait until the console has cooled before handling the covers.
- Position the console. Put it on a soft cloth over a flat surface, following the orientation shown in Sony’s setup guide.
- Remove the short horizontal stand feet. Sony’s instructions specify the short feet used for the horizontal configuration. Set them aside in a safe container.
- Remove the specified cover. Follow the illustrated release points and lift the cover as shown. Do not substitute a different panel or rely on a cover from another model group.
- Attach the drive. Align the detachable drive with the console exactly as shown in the guide, including the connector and clip orientation.
- Fit the replacement cover. Install the cover supplied for the drive configuration and confirm that it is seated as illustrated.
- Reconnect the cables. Reattach the AC power cord and the other cables, then power on the console.
- Connect to the internet and pair. Complete the on-screen setup that pairs the drive with the PS5. Internet access is required for this pairing step.
If a panel or clip does not align with the illustrated position, stop and check the orientation rather than forcing it. Return to Sony’s illustrated installation sequence and compare the console, drive, and cover with the diagrams.

Sony says the removed cover and stand feet are needed if you later use the console without the drive attached. Store them together with the drive’s packaging or another clearly labeled container. Losing those parts can make a future drive removal or console reconfiguration more difficult.
This is also useful if you move the console, return the accessory under a retailer’s policy, or need to restore the original configuration. The instruction applies to the parts removed during the installation; do not discard them as packing material.
What discs and media are supported?
Sony’s media-support information lists the detachable-drive-compatible consoles alongside supported optical formats. The published categories include Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD, as well as specified recordable formats.
| Media category | How Sony describes support | How to use this information |
|---|---|---|
| Ultra HD Blu-ray | Listed on Sony’s supported disc and media page | Use the published support list rather than assuming every optical variant is included. |
| Blu-ray | Listed on Sony’s supported disc and media page | Check Sony’s format details for the exact disc type you own. |
| DVD | Listed on Sony’s supported disc and media page | Confirm the specific format against Sony’s list before relying on it. |
| Specified recordable formats | Included in Sony’s published format list | Consult the page for the exact recordable formats; support should not be inferred for every writable disc. |
The support page is the authority for the exact format list. Do not broaden Sony’s categories into a promise that every disc type, recording method, region, or commercial release will work. The CFI-1000 Digital Edition remains excluded from disc-based games and media even though other Digital Edition groups can use the detachable drive.
Choose the right buying path
Your decision can be reduced to three checks: model group, need for discs, and internet access for the initial pairing.

If you have a CFI-2000 Digital Edition
The model group is one Sony identifies for the CFI-ZDD1 accessory. Buy the drive only after confirming the retailer’s current listing and return terms, then follow the powered-off installation sequence. This is the path for a Digital Edition owner who wants to add compatible disc-based games or supported disc media.
If you have a CFI-7000 console
Sony’s media information lists the CFI-ZDD1 series for this group. Confirm the exact model number on the console before ordering, because a nearby model name or bundle description is not a substitute for the CFI group.
If you have a CFI-1000 Digital Edition
Do not buy the detachable drive expecting an upgrade. Sony expressly says this group does not support disc-based games or media. The drive’s compatibility with later groups does not extend backward to the CFI-1000 group.
If you cannot provide internet access during setup
Wait until the console can connect to the internet. Pairing is required during setup, so an offline installation is not a supported shortcut.
Buying checklist
- Read the model label: Confirm the console’s CFI group before opening a retailer page.
- Match the accessory: Look for Sony’s CFI-ZDD1 series, not a generic “PS5 disc drive” description.
- Confirm that it is separate: Treat the drive as an add-on unless the specific bundle explicitly lists it.
- Check the seller: Review the retailer, stock status, delivery terms, and return policy at the time of purchase.
- Plan the installation: Have a flat, cloth-covered surface and enough time to power down, cool, disconnect, and reconnect the console.
- Plan the pairing: Make sure the console can reach the internet during first-time setup.
- Save removed parts: Keep the original cover and short horizontal stand feet.
- Verify media needs: Compare the discs you intend to use with Sony’s published Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD, and recordable-format list.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Ordering by “Digital Edition” alone
“Digital Edition” describes a broad product category, not one universal hardware design. The CFI-2000 Digital Edition is listed for the detachable drive, while the CFI-1000 Digital Edition is expressly not supported. Always use the CFI group.
Assuming the drive is included
Sony identifies the CFI-ZDD1 as separately sold. A console’s digital status does not imply that the accessory is in the box. Read the exact bundle contents.
Skipping the pairing step
The drive may be physically attached, but Sony still requires internet access to pair it with the console during setup. Include network access in your installation plan.

Discarding the removed parts
The original cover and stand feet are needed to use the console without the drive attached. Keep them even if you expect to leave the drive installed permanently.
Guessing cover orientation
The drive and cover use specific clip and orientation positions. Use the official illustrations rather than forcing a panel that does not align.
Troubleshooting by symptom
You are unsure whether the drive will fit
Stop before purchase and re-read the console’s model label. If it belongs to CFI-1000 Digital Edition, the detachable drive is not supported. If it belongs to CFI-2000 or CFI-7000, compare the exact group with Sony’s compatibility page and the retailer’s listing.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The drive cannot be paired
Check that the PS5 has an internet connection, because Sony requires internet access for pairing during setup. If the connection is unavailable, restore connectivity and repeat the pairing step. Do not treat a physical installation as complete until the console finishes its setup process.
A cover or clip does not line up
Power the console off and disconnect it again before inspecting the installation. Compare the cover, drive, and clip orientation with Sony’s illustrated guide. Reposition them only according to that sequence; do not force a misaligned part.
You want to remove the drive later
Use Sony’s setup instructions in reverse only as far as the illustrations support, and retrieve the original cover and stand feet you stored during installation. Those parts are required for using the console without the drive attached.
A particular disc is not recognized
First confirm that the console is a compatible model group and that the drive completed pairing. Then compare the disc with Sony’s published support categories and exact format list. Do not infer support for a disc type merely because it is optical media.
What Sony’s documentation does—and does not—establish
The official pages establish the compatible model groups, the CFI-ZDD1 series designation, the separate-sale status, the installation sequence, the need for internet pairing, and the supported media categories. They do not establish a permanent price, stock level, seller, return policy, failure rate, sales volume, or a universal rule for every regional disc variation.
That distinction matters when comparing retailer claims. Use Sony’s model and media information for compatibility; use the retailer’s live page for price and commercial terms; and treat any broader promise about formats or offline behavior as unverified unless Sony states it.
Final decision
Buy the detachable drive only when your console is in the CFI-2000 or CFI-7000 group, you want supported disc-based games or media, and you can connect the console to the internet for initial pairing. If your console is a CFI-1000 Digital Edition, choose another way to access your games or media rather than purchasing the CFI-ZDD1 drive. For a compatible console, the safest installation is Sony’s exact sequence: power down, unplug, cool, work on a soft cloth, follow the illustrated cover and stand-foot steps, pair online, and keep the removed parts.
