Short answer: a disc-drive PS5 is the more flexible library choice if you already own PS4 or PS5 discs, want physical editions, or want to buy in either format. A Digital Edition is the better fit if you are content to buy and download every game through PlayStation Store and do not need disc games or disc media. Neither format is proven to be universally cheaper; your existing collection, household sharing, preferred buying method and current local prices decide the value.

The direct answer for your library

Choose the standard, disc-drive PS5 when preserving access to an existing disc collection is important. It can play compatible PS4 and PS5 game discs as well as digital purchases, so you retain both buying paths. Choose a Digital Edition when your library is already digital, you never expect to use discs, and avoiding disc handling matters more than format flexibility.

Sony says the standard PS5 plays PS5 and PS4 collections on Blu-ray Disc and supports digital downloads. The Digital Edition has no drive by default. Sony’s current US purchase page lists the standard PS5 with 1TB of storage and the Digital Edition with 825GB; those figures are the capacities shown on that page, not a guarantee that every regional or later hardware revision has the same specification. See the US PS5 purchase page.

What changes between digital and disc games

Disc games still use the console’s storage

A physical game is not played entirely from the disc. On first use, the PS5 installs the game to console storage. Sony’s disc-game installation instructions state that the disc must remain inserted each time you play. The disc therefore acts as the ownership check after installation; it is not a removable substitute for the storage space the installed game occupies.

  • Hack & Shoot – Use each character’s distinct abilities to take down enemies. In combat, Diana can hack foes to expose weaknesses so Hugh can blast them with weapons. This unique fusion of gameplay offers an action-packed experience like no other.
  • Space Exploration – Teamwork also extends to traversing the station. Utilize the thrusters in Hugh’s futuristic suit to dash and hover around while Diana hacks security systems to solve puzzles. Only together can they overcome all obstacles.
  • Collect and Customize – Gather materials while exploring the station to unlock upgrades, build out a diverse arsenal of weapons, obtain new outfits, and more. Once you’re ready, use the new gear in battle and take on even greater challenges!

Disc ownership can be useful when you want a tangible edition or access to physical retail and used-game listings. It does not make every game feature permanently available offline: patches, online services and other publisher requirements can still apply, and the available evidence does not establish that a disc is a complete offline backup of all of them.

Digital purchases live in an account library

A digital game is purchased or redeemed through a PlayStation account and appears in that signed-in account’s game library for downloading. You can install it on either type of PS5 when the account owns it and the game supports that console. The practical benefit is that you do not have to store or swap a disc; the trade-off is that access is tied to the account and the platform’s licensing and download systems.

Digital ownership should not be treated as a freely transferable or resalable copy. Keep the purchasing account secure, and make sure the account that owns a game is the one you can continue to access.

Compatibility with an existing PS4 or PS5 collection

Your current shelves are the fastest way to decide. A disc-drive console can continue using compatible PS4 and PS5 discs, while a Digital Edition without a supported add-on drive cannot read those discs. Digital purchases are usable on both hardware types, subject to the game’s compatibility and account license.

Sony’s current ecosystem page describes “more than 4,000 games ready to play on both PS4 and PS5.” That is a catalog statement covering the ecosystem, not a count of PS5-native titles. The page is available at The PlayStation ecosystem.

At launch in 2020, Sony said “more than 99% of the 4,000+ PS4 games” were compatible with PS5. That figure belongs to Sony’s historical launch FAQ, not a newly verified 2026 test; read the original context in PS5: The Ultimate FAQ.

Make an inventory before choosing

  1. List every PS4 or PS5 game you own on disc, including games borrowed from family or expected to be bought used.
  2. Separate games you already own digitally from games you might rebuy. A Digital Edition does not convert a disc collection into account licenses.
  3. Check special editions and region details before assuming an upgrade or downloadable entitlement will carry over.
  4. If even a few important games are disc-only for you, price a disc-drive PS5 rather than treating the Digital Edition’s lower entry price as the whole calculation.

Sharing digital games and playing offline

Digital purchases can be shared with other users on one enabled PS5 through Sony’s Console Sharing and Offline Play feature. When the feature is enabled on a PS5, other users on that console can play games you purchased and downloaded even while that console is offline. Sony limits the feature to one PS5 at a time.

What this means in a household

  • The purchasing account must own the game and download it to the PS5 where sharing is enabled.
  • Other local users on that enabled console can use the downloaded purchase while the console is offline.
  • Moving the sharing setting to another PS5 changes which console receives that offline, multi-user benefit.
  • This feature does not create separate licenses that can be sold or freely transferred to unrelated accounts.

A disc provides a different kind of access: whoever has the disc can insert it into a compatible drive-equipped console, but the disc must be present to launch the installed game. For a family deciding between formats, digital sharing is convenient when everyone uses one designated PS5; a disc-drive PS5 is more flexible when the collection itself moves between consoles or people.

Convenience, handling and long-term flexibility

Why digital can feel simpler

  • Games are selected from the account library instead of a shelf.
  • You avoid swapping discs when changing games.
  • A household using one PS5 can use Console Sharing and Offline Play for other local users.

These are practical consequences of the account and installation systems, not measured claims about loading speed or lifetime cost. Both formats use console storage after installation, so either library eventually requires storage management.

Why discs remain valuable

  • You can keep a physical edition and its packaging.
  • Physical retail and used-game listings create another way to find a title, although savings and resale value are not guaranteed.
  • A disc-drive PS5 preserves the option to buy digital games later; choosing a Digital Edition removes disc access unless your exact model supports a separately sold drive.

Do not assume that a disc is a complete archival copy. Updates, downloadable content and online functions may remain dependent on servers or publisher policies, even though the disc is required to launch the installed game.

Cost: compare the exact game, not just the console format

No universal price winner has been established. Digital and physical prices change by country, retailer, edition, sale and release date, and no lifetime-cost or resale survey supports a blanket claim that one format is cheaper.

A useful price check

  1. Compare the same edition and included content. A standard disc edition and a deluxe digital edition are not equivalent products.
  2. Check the current PlayStation Store price for your account region.
  3. Check current new and used physical prices in your region, including delivery and any retailer return conditions.
  4. For a Digital Edition that might later need a drive, add the current price of a compatible drive and account for the required setup connection.
  5. Decide whether a possible used-game bargain or resale option is worth keeping a drive for; treat it as a possibility, not a guaranteed saving.

Prices and available editions are volatile. Verify them at the time of purchase rather than relying on an old comparison.

PS4-to-PS5 upgrades: the disc caveat matters

Sony allows selected PS4 games to offer a digital PS5-version upgrade. Depending on the title, the offer can be free, paid or limited-time. The game’s publisher, your region and the offer period determine eligibility.

If you own the PS4 game on disc

  1. Use a PS5 with a disc drive; a Digital Edition without a drive cannot verify the PS4 disc.
  2. Use a disc whose region matches the region of the account making the upgrade.
  3. Claim or buy the eligible PS5 digital version through the offer shown for that game.
  4. Keep the original PS4 disc inserted whenever you play the upgraded PS5 version. The upgrade does not turn the disc into an account-only license.

If you own the PS4 game digitally

A digital PS4 purchase can be upgraded on either type of PS5 when an offer exists, subject to that game’s rules. Read Sony’s current requirements and exceptions in PS4 game upgrade instructions before paying an upgrade fee.

Can a Digital Edition add a disc drive?

Only certain later models support Sony’s detachable drive. Sony identifies CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 Digital Edition groups and PS5 Pro (CFI-7000) for the CFI-ZDD1-series drive. Sony’s product information also says an internet connection is required during initial pairing. Model references differ between Sony support pages, so match the drive to the exact model number printed on your console and verify compatibility before buying.

Setup checklist for a supported add-on drive

  1. Read the console’s model number and compare it with Sony’s supported CFI-2000, CFI-2100 or CFI-7000 groups.
  2. Confirm that the drive model is the one Sony lists for that console family.
  3. Plan an internet connection for the initial pairing process.
  4. Only after compatibility is confirmed should you compare the drive’s current price with buying a disc-drive PS5 instead.

Performance is not the deciding difference

In Sony’s original November 9, 2020 FAQ comparing the launch PS5 and launch Digital Edition, Sony stated: “No. The consoles’ performance is identical, outside the existence of a disc drive.” That statement is historical and applies to that original comparison; it should not be stretched into a claim that every later hardware revision has identical specifications. For a library decision, the dependable distinction is disc access versus digital-only access, not an assumed performance advantage.

Sony’s January 2028 notice and what it does—and does not—mean

Sony’s current US PS5 page carries a notice that, from January 2028, newly released PlayStation games will be available for purchase digitally only. The notice is specifically on the US page and concerns games released from that future date. It also says discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on the console.

That notice does not say that older discs stop working in January 2028. If you value access to pre-2028 physical releases, a compatible drive-equipped PS5 remains the straightforward choice. If nearly all of your future purchases will be digital and your existing collection is digital, the notice reduces the practical importance of owning a drive for new releases, but it does not remove the compatibility question for older discs.

Choose by situation

Your situation Better fit Reason
You own PS4 or PS5 discs you still play Disc-drive PS5 It preserves access to compatible discs without rebuying them digitally.
You buy exclusively through PlayStation Store Digital Edition You do not pay for a drive you do not plan to use.
You want both physical and digital buying options Disc-drive PS5 It supports digital purchases while retaining disc compatibility.
You share one digital library with other users on one household PS5 Either format Console Sharing and Offline Play works for digital purchases on one enabled PS5; the drive decision depends on whether anyone also needs discs.
You are considering a used Digital Edition Check the model first CFI-1000 cannot use the add-on drive, while specified later groups can.
You collect physical editions or expect to buy used Disc-drive PS5 It keeps physical retail and used listings available, without promising a particular saving.

A purchase checklist that avoids expensive mistakes

  • Inventory: count the discs you already own and identify any titles that matter enough to keep.
  • Account: verify which PlayStation account owns your digital games and that you can sign in to it.
  • Region: check account and disc-region requirements before relying on a PS4 upgrade.
  • Model: if considering a Digital Edition plus drive, record the exact CFI model rather than relying on the console’s marketing name.
  • Storage: remember that disc games install to storage too; a drive does not eliminate the need for free space.
  • Price: compare the exact current edition and local physical price, then include any compatible-drive cost.
  • Future use: decide whether physical games released before January 2028, collections and used purchases matter to you.

Bottom line

A disc-drive PS5 is the safest all-purpose choice for a mixed or growing library: it accepts compatible PS4 and PS5 discs and digital purchases, and it leaves your buying options open. A Digital Edition is sensible for an account-based library with no disc requirement, especially when you are comfortable downloading every game and using digital sharing on one household console. The right answer is conditional, so base it on the discs you already own and the exact prices and model compatibility available where you live.
