A PS5 digital game is licensed to the PlayStation Network account that bought it. The purchase does not move to another account, but the owner can enable Console Sharing and Offline Play on one PS5 so other users of that console can play downloaded purchases without signing in as the owner. When you change consoles, the sharing setting and Sony’s activation rules determine who can launch the game and whether an internet check is required.
This guide explains the account relationship, the exact console limits, how to set up sharing, what happens when an old PS5 is unavailable, how PlayStation Plus benefits are shared, and what to do when a padlock appears.
What a digital PS5 purchase actually licenses
Buying a game from the PlayStation Store gives an entitlement to the PlayStation Network account used for the transaction. The account remains the entitlement holder even after the game is downloaded to a console. Downloading the files is therefore not the same as transferring ownership to the console or to another user profile.

Sony’s support guidance describes a padlock as a possible license or network problem and asks players to check the account that owns the game. If the owning account has no entitlement, deleting and reinstalling the game will not create one.

Ownership versus access
Console Sharing and Offline Play grants access to other users on a particular PS5; it does not change which account owns the purchase. The buyer controls the entitlement, the sharing setting, and any subscription attached to that account. A second user can launch a shared game from their own profile on the designated PS5, but that user does not acquire an independent license that follows them to every console.
How Console Sharing and Offline Play works
On the first PS5 where the purchasing account signs in, Console Sharing and Offline Play is automatically allowed. The owner can review or change it at Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play.
When the feature is enabled on a PS5, anyone who uses that console can play the owner’s purchased and downloaded games while offline. The same console can also provide selected PlayStation Plus benefits to its other users. The setting applies to the console, not to a particular guest profile.
What other users can do on the enabled PS5
- Launch the owner’s purchased games that are downloaded to the console.
- Play those downloaded purchases without the owner’s account being online.
- Use the PlayStation Plus benefits that Sony identifies as shareable.
What the setting does not do
- It does not transfer the purchase to another PlayStation Network account.
- It does not authorize every PS5 at once.
- It does not make every PlayStation Plus feature shareable.
Console activation limits you need to know
Sony publishes separate activation limits for its systems. The PS5 sharing setting concerns one PS5, while the broader activation table covers several PlayStation generations.

A PS5 and a PS4 may be active at the same time. That fact does not create a second sharing-enabled PS5; the one-PS5 rule still applies to Console Sharing and Offline Play.
Set up game sharing on a PS5
Use this sequence when the owner wants another profile in the household to play their digital purchases.

- Open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play.
- Select the option to enable the feature. If another PS5 is already enabled, the account must be moved from that console first.
- Remain signed in long enough for the PS5 to verify the account and download the games the household wants available offline.
- Switch to the other person’s local PS5 profile and start a downloaded title from the Game Library.
- Keep the purchasing account’s security details private. The other person needs a user profile on the enabled console, not the owner’s password.
If the game is not present locally, the other user cannot play it offline until the owner’s account downloads it to that PS5. A title that is still downloading, has been deleted, or is stored on unavailable external media will not launch simply because sharing is enabled.

Move sharing to a different PS5
When you still have the old console
- On the old PS5, sign in with the purchasing account.
- Go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play and disable the feature.
- Sign in with the same account on the replacement PS5.
- Open the same menu and enable Console Sharing and Offline Play there.
Disabling the old console removes its offline-sharing role; it does not delete the account’s purchases. The new PS5 then becomes the console whose other users can access downloaded games.
When the old console is lost, broken, or sold
Use PlayStation Account Management and choose Deactivate All Devices. Sony says this remote action deactivates every activated device rather than letting you select one inaccessible PS5. It is available only once every six months, so treat it as a recovery measure, not a routine way to switch consoles.
After the remote deactivation, sign in on the PS5 you actually use and enable Console Sharing and Offline Play there. Any other device that depended on the account’s previous activation will need to be activated again under the applicable limits.
Can two people play the same digital game?
The supported arrangement is a sharing-enabled PS5 used by another local profile while the purchasing account signs in on a different PS5. The first console supplies offline access to its other users; the owner’s account provides the entitlement on the other console, where normal account and network checks apply.

The arrangement is account-based, not a way to duplicate a purchase. If the owner signs out of a console where their account is needed for license verification, a title may stop launching until the account signs in again or the console completes the required check.
How PlayStation Plus sharing is limited
Sony allows selected PlayStation Plus benefits to be shared with other users on the primary PS4 and on one PS5 that has Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled. The subscription itself remains attached to the subscriber’s account.
“Selected” is important: Sony’s support guidance does not promise that every PlayStation Plus feature can be shared. Do not assume that a benefit available to the subscriber automatically appears for every profile. Check the behavior of the specific feature on the enabled console and keep the subscription account signed in when Sony requires it.

A padlock generally means the PS5 cannot confirm the entitlement or the network check needed for that content. Sony’s error guidance for CE-109245-1 states: “The license information of the content can’t be confirmed.” The icon does not by itself prove that the game was deleted or that the purchase is lost.

Work through these checks in order
- Use the purchasing account. Sign in with the PlayStation Network account that bought the game or otherwise holds its entitlement. If the title belongs to a different account, switch to that account before testing.
- Check the sharing console. On the PS5 intended for household use, open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play and confirm it is enabled for the owning account.
- Check PlayStation Network status. A service interruption can prevent a license check even when the account and installation are correct.
- Install pending system software updates. Restart the PS5 after updating, then try the title again.
- Restore licenses. In the PS5 account settings, choose Restore Licenses and allow the process to finish before launching the game.
- Recheck the console move. If the owner recently changed PS5s, verify that the old console was disabled or that Account Management’s remote deactivation was used. Remember that remote all-device deactivation is limited to once every six months.
If the padlock remains after these steps, confirm that the game was purchased by the account currently being tested and that the account has not been suspended or otherwise restricted. A reinstall is useful only after the entitlement and sharing configuration are correct.
Common situations and the correct response
You bought a replacement PS5
Sign in with the purchasing account, move Console Sharing and Offline Play from the old system, and download the games again. Your library remains associated with the account; the console change affects access configuration rather than ownership.
You sold the old PS5 without disabling it
Use Account Management’s Deactivate All Devices, then enable sharing on the PS5 you retain. Because the remote action affects every activated device and is restricted to one use per six months, use it only when the former console cannot be reached.

Have the owner sign in on that PS5, verify Console Sharing and Offline Play, ensure the game is downloaded, and restore licenses. The family member should launch the title from their own profile after the owner’s account has completed the checks.
You want to share with someone who uses a different PS5
Enable sharing on only one PS5. The person using that console can access downloaded purchases through their own profile; the owner can use their account on another PS5. A second person’s PS5 cannot become an additional offline-sharing console for the same account.
Practical rules to avoid losing access
- Keep track of which physical PS5 currently has Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled.
- Disable the setting before selling, trading, or giving away a console whenever possible.
- Reserve remote deactivation for an inaccessible console because of its six-month interval and all-device scope.
- Download the games needed for offline use while the owner’s account is correctly configured.
- Use separate user profiles and never treat a shared purchase as ownership of the other person’s account.
- When a padlock appears, check the owning account and license state before deleting the installation.
The reliable model is simple: the buyer’s account owns the entitlement, one designated PS5 can extend offline access to its other users, and another console can use the purchase through the owner’s account subject to license verification. Activation limits and the six-month remote-deactivation rule are the boundaries that determine how easily that arrangement can be moved.
