Sony says a one-time online check confirms a purchased PlayStation game’s license; after that, no further check-ins are required. That clarification, reported on April 30, 2026, addresses the concern described online as a “30-day license check.” It does not establish every technical detail of the check or guarantee that every game will work offline in every circumstance. If a purchased game shows a lock, PlayStation’s first recommended fix is to restore licenses—not to assume the purchase was revoked.
What Sony said about the reported 30-day check
An SIE spokesperson told GameSpot: “Players can continue to access and play their purchased games as usual. A one-time online check is required to confirm the game’s license, after which no further check-ins are required.” TechRadar and Tom’s Hardware reported the statement on April 30, 2026. TechRadar’s report and Tom’s Hardware’s report both reproduce the clarification.

So the best-supported answer to “Will my digital PS5 games stop working if I stay offline?” is: Sony’s reported clarification says the license needs a one-time online confirmation, not recurring 30-day check-ins. But it does not spell out the check’s exact trigger, timing, rollout, firmware requirements, or which purchases it covers. PlayStation’s public support pages explain license restoration and a server-confirmation error, but do not provide those implementation details. Avoid treating either a reported 30-day timer or a universal promise of permanent offline access as a complete technical specification.
Why a purchased game can show a lock
A lock icon does not by itself prove that a purchase was removed. PlayStation lists the padlock as a reason to restore licenses and notes that this symptom is not necessarily connected to a PlayStation Plus membership expiring. The account signed in, console sharing or primary-console settings, and a temporary inability to confirm license information can all be relevant to troubleshooting. Restore licenses and check console settings
- Confirm the purchasing account. Sign in to the account that acquired the game. If license confirmation is failing, check PlayStation service status before making other changes.
- Restore licenses on PS5. Open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses, then select the affected game if prompted.
- Restore licenses on PS4. Open Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses.
- Check offline-sharing activation. On PS5, verify Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled on the console you use. On PS4, check that the console is activated as your primary PS4.
- Retry the game. PlayStation says restoring licenses does not affect game data. If the issue remains, use PlayStation Support and provide the account and purchase details along with any displayed error.
What CE-109258-5 means and what to try
PlayStation describes PS5 error CE-109258-5 as a possible failure to connect to a server, meaning license information was not confirmed. That is a confirmation problem; the error alone does not establish that the purchase is gone. PlayStation’s CE-109258-5 guidance recommends checking service status, restarting the console and network equipment, restoring licenses, and trying again later.
- Check PlayStation service status.
- Restart the PS5.
- Restart the modem or router. PlayStation advises waiting at least five minutes before restarting network equipment.
- Restore licenses using the PS5 path above, then try again later.
- If the entitlement still appears missing, contact PlayStation Support with the error and purchase information. Keep track of when you attempted to access the game; PlayStation’s download troubleshooting guidance asks affected customers for timestamps.
Digital games and discs: different limits
Digital purchases depend on the purchasing account and its license. PlayStation’s US terms say digital product access may be lost if the purchasing account is deleted or suspended. The same terms say a suspended console may still play disc games that run without PlayStation Services. These are separate caveats, not a guarantee that all disc games work offline: an individual title may require online services, and a disc does not necessarily contain every file or service the game needs. The cited terms are for the United States; terms can vary by region.

Physical media is also subject to a dated change: Sony announced that production of physical discs for new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will stop beginning in January 2028. Sony said the change does not affect titles released or releasing before January 2028 in disc format. This announcement concerns new releases, not the immediate operation of existing discs. Sony’s announcement provides the stated scope and date.
