PS5 does not accept a conventional Bluetooth headset as a direct game-audio device. For headset sound, use a compatible USB headset, a 3.5 mm headset connected to the DualSense controller, or a wireless system that presents a supported USB or PlayStation Link connection. Bluetooth can still be used as a second connection on some PlayStation Link headsets, but that is not the same as pairing an ordinary Bluetooth headset directly with the console.

The compatibility answer in one table

Connection route What the PS5 sees Will it work? What to check
Direct Bluetooth headset A Bluetooth audio device No. Sony identifies Bluetooth audio devices as incompatible with PS5 consoles. Do not rely on the headset appearing in the Bluetooth accessories list.
USB headset A USB audio device Usually. Sony says most USB headsets are supported. Exact model compatibility, microphone operation, USB-A or USB-C plug, and any required software or adapter.
Wireless headset with USB adapter The adapter as a USB audio device, or a supported proprietary wireless system Often, but compatibility is model-specific. Whether the adapter is designed for PS5 and whether it carries both audio and microphone signals.
PlayStation Link headset or earbuds A paired PlayStation Link USB adapter Yes, when the headset, earbuds and adapter are compatible. Correct PlayStation Link adapter, pairing procedure and connector version.
3.5 mm analog headset The headset connected to the DualSense controller Yes, subject to the headset and cable. Use a compatible four-conductor cable if you need the microphone.

Sony’s PS5 FAQ says that third-party wireless headsets using Bluetooth are not supported, while most USB and analog headsets are. Sony’s support documentation separately describes a Bluetooth audio device as incompatible with PS5. The practical rule is therefore simple: identify the connection the console actually sees, rather than the wireless technology advertised on the box.

Why ordinary Bluetooth pairing fails

Bluetooth headphones normally expect a host device to provide a standard Bluetooth audio profile. The PS5 does not provide that direct headset-audio path for ordinary Bluetooth products. Consequently, putting headphones into pairing mode does not make them appear as a usable game-audio output, even if the same headphones work with a phone, tablet or computer.

This restriction applies to game sound and, in practice, means you should not assume the headset microphone will work either. A headset can be Bluetooth-compatible in general and still be incompatible with PS5 audio. Compatibility must be verified for the exact headset and its connection method.

That limitation is different from the console supporting wireless audio through a dedicated adapter. When a headset includes a USB transmitter, the PS5 communicates with the transmitter as a USB audio device or through a console-specific wireless system. The headset is not being paired to the PS5 as a generic Bluetooth device.

How USB audio works on PS5

USB headsets

A compatible USB headset contains, or connects to, a USB audio interface. Plug it into a PS5 USB-A or USB-C port and the console can select it as an output and input device. Sony states that USB-A and USB-C headsets are among the headsets that can be used for 3D Audio, although “most” USB headsets is not a guarantee that every model or every feature will work.

USB support can vary by model. Basic stereo output may work while a proprietary control panel, sidetone feature, equalizer, removable boom or chat-mixing control does not. The microphone may also require the headset’s supplied USB interface rather than a passive USB cable. Check the manufacturer’s PS5 compatibility statement and confirm that voice chat is supported before buying.

Wireless headsets with a USB transmitter

Many wireless gaming headsets ship with a USB transmitter. The transmitter performs the console-facing job: it presents an audio connection the PS5 understands, while the headset communicates wirelessly with the transmitter. This arrangement can work without Bluetooth pairing, but it is not universal. A transmitter designed only for a computer, or one that exposes an unsupported device type, may fail to provide sound or microphone input on PS5.

Do not infer compatibility merely from a transmitter having a USB plug. Confirm that the specific transmitter-headset combination lists PS5 support and that its chat microphone is supported, not just playback.

PlayStation Link

PlayStation Link is Sony’s separate wireless system for compatible products. A PlayStation Link USB adapter connects to the PS5, and a compatible headset or pair of earbuds uses the PlayStation Link connection rather than ordinary Bluetooth. Sony describes PlayStation Link as offering “ultra-low latency” and “lossless wireless audio.” Those are Sony’s descriptions of its technology, not an independent measurement that proves it is faster or better sounding than every USB, analog or other wireless setup.

How analog audio works through the DualSense

A conventional wired headset can connect to the 3.5 mm jack on the DualSense controller. The controller then carries game audio to the headset and, when the plug and cable support it, carries microphone input back to the console. This is the simplest fallback when you do not need wireless freedom or a USB port.

Sony includes 3.5 mm headsets among the connections usable for 3D Audio. Headset controls vary: volume buttons, a mute switch, inline controls and a detachable microphone may work differently in controller mode. A four-conductor 3.5 mm cable is important for headsets that rely on the cable for microphone input.

The PULSE 3D manual illustrates the distinction. Its supplied USB adapter supports wireless use, while a four-conductor 3.5 mm cable supports wired use. In cable mode, some wireless controls and features are unavailable, and microphone operation depends on using a compatible four-conductor cable. That example should not be generalized to every headset, but it shows why “has a 3.5 mm jack” does not mean every function will be available.

Bluetooth, USB and PlayStation Link: what actually differs?

Characteristic Direct Bluetooth USB audio PlayStation Link 3.5 mm analog
Direct PS5 headset pairing Unsupported for ordinary Bluetooth audio devices. Uses a USB audio connection. Uses a paired PlayStation Link USB adapter. Connects to the DualSense jack.
Wireless operation Not available through direct PS5 pairing. Available when the USB device is a wireless transmitter. Designed for compatible wireless products. No; the cable remains connected.
Microphone Not available through unsupported direct pairing. Depends on the headset and USB interface. Depends on the compatible headset and adapter. Depends on the plug, cable and headset.
3D Audio No direct Bluetooth route. Sony says compatible USB-A and USB-C headsets can use 3D Audio. Available through compatible PlayStation Link products and the console’s audio settings. Sony includes compatible 3.5 mm headsets among 3D Audio connections.
Secondary phone connection Not relevant to direct PS5 pairing. Depends on the headset’s design. Some products can use PlayStation Link for PS5 while using Bluetooth with a phone. Not wireless.

There is no reliable basis for saying that USB always has lower latency or better sound than Bluetooth in every implementation. A USB headset, a USB wireless transmitter and an analog headset can all have different hardware and signal paths. Sony’s latency and lossless statements apply to PlayStation Link as Sony characterizes it; no single independently measured latency figure establishes a universal ranking among these routes.

Connect a compatible USB headset

  1. Insert the headset’s USB plug, or its supplied wireless USB transmitter, into a PS5 USB-A or USB-C port.
  2. Turn on the headset if it is wireless and put it in the connection mode specified for its transmitter. Do not select ordinary Bluetooth pairing on the PS5.
  3. On the console, open Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
  4. Use Output Device to select the headset or its USB adapter if the PS5 has not selected it automatically.
  5. Check the input-device setting and speak into the microphone. Confirm that the input meter responds and that other players can hear you in a voice-chat test.
  6. Play a short clip and adjust the console’s output volume, headset volume and chat/game balance controls. Some headset controls work only in USB wireless mode and not when a cable is used.

If the headset appears as an output device but the microphone is silent, check the headset’s mute switch, the USB adapter’s mode switch and the PS5 input-device selection. If it does not appear at all, try the other USB port, reconnect the adapter, restart the console and verify that the product’s documentation explicitly lists PS5 support.

  • Comfort is King: Comfort’s in the Cloud III’s DNA. Built for gamers who can’t have an uncomfortable headset ruin the flow of their full-combo, disrupt their speedrun, or knocking them out of the zone.

  • Durability, for the Toughest of Battles: The headset is flexible and features an aluminum frame so it’s resilient against travel, accidents, mishaps, and your ‘level-headed’ reactions to losses and defeat screens.

Connect a 3.5 mm headset to the DualSense

  1. Insert the headset plug fully into the 3.5 mm socket on the bottom of the DualSense controller.
  2. Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output and confirm that the controller headset is selected as the output device if switching did not occur automatically.
  3. Open the microphone settings and choose the controller-connected headset as the input device when necessary.
  4. Test playback and voice chat. If the microphone is missing, use a four-conductor cable with a headset that supports microphone-over-TRRS.
  5. Adjust volume and mute from the controller or headset controls that remain functional in wired mode.

A headset can deliver sound through a 3.5 mm cable while losing wireless-only features such as sidetone, onboard mixing or button commands. Consult the exact model’s manual rather than assuming that its wireless feature set carries over to analog mode.

Use a PlayStation Link headset or earbuds

  1. Connect the compatible PlayStation Link USB adapter to the PS5. Use the adapter intended for the headset or earbuds and check whether the package requires USB-A, USB-C or an included converter.
  2. Power on the headset or earbuds and complete the PlayStation Link pairing process described for that model.
  3. Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output and select the PlayStation Link device if it is not selected automatically.
  4. Test both game audio and the microphone. Confirm that chat input is active before joining a party or multiplayer match.
  5. If the product supports simultaneous connections, pair Bluetooth separately with the phone or other device. Keep the PS5 audio path on PlayStation Link; Bluetooth is the additional device connection.

PULSE Explore is an example of this dual-connection design: Sony describes it as connecting to PS5 through its adapter while also connecting to a phone over Bluetooth. That capability does not make the earbuds a conventional Bluetooth headset that can pair directly with the PS5.

What to check before buying

For the broadest compatibility

Search for a headset explicitly identified as PS5-compatible USB audio, then verify the exact model number. Confirm all of the following:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The connector type: USB-A, USB-C or a transmitter with an included adapter.
  • Game-audio playback and voice-chat microphone support, not playback alone.
  • Whether 3D Audio is supported and whether any advertised controls require a separate app unavailable on PS5.
  • Whether the transmitter must remain plugged in and whether it supports the PS5’s USB ports.
  • Whether the manufacturer documents firmware updates or a console-specific operating mode.

For cable-free PlayStation operation

Choose a product that names PlayStation Link or includes a PS5-compatible wireless USB adapter. Do not substitute a generic Bluetooth receiver without model-specific evidence. A generic transmitter may work only if it presents a USB audio device the PS5 accepts, and Sony does not certify every such product. Microphone support is especially uncertain.

For the lowest complexity

A 3.5 mm headset connected to the DualSense avoids pairing and transmitter compatibility questions. The trade-offs are a cable to the controller, controller-battery use for the audio path and possible loss of wireless-only headset features.

Troubleshooting by symptom

“The PS5 cannot find my Bluetooth headphones.”

This is expected for an ordinary Bluetooth audio headset. Use a compatible USB connection, a DualSense 3.5 mm connection or a PlayStation Link adapter instead. Repeating Bluetooth discovery will not turn an unsupported device into a supported one.

Open Settings > Sound > Microphone and select the headset or its USB transmitter as the input device. Check the physical mute switch, confirm that the transmitter is in the correct console mode and verify that the model’s PS5 documentation promises microphone support.

“The headset works wirelessly but not through the cable.”

Check the cable wiring and plug standard. A four-conductor cable is generally required for microphone input through a 3.5 mm controller connection. Some wireless controls and features are unavailable in cable mode by design.

“A USB Bluetooth transmitter is connected, but there is no audio.”

USB power alone does not establish compatibility. Confirm that the transmitter exposes a supported USB audio device, that the headset is paired to that transmitter rather than to the console, and that the product lists PS5 support. If the manufacturer does not document microphone operation, treat chat as unverified.

“The PS5 sees the device but keeps using the TV.”

Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output and set Output Device manually. Reconnect the USB adapter or headset after changing the selection, then test a game and voice chat separately.

Which route should you choose?

  • Choose USB audio when you want a direct, broadly supported connection and can accept a cable or a model-specific wireless transmitter.
  • Choose PlayStation Link when you want compatible Sony wireless hardware, the adapter-based connection and, on supported products, a simultaneous Bluetooth connection to a phone.
  • Choose 3.5 mm analog when reliability and simplicity matter more than wireless range or advanced headset controls.
  • Do not choose direct Bluetooth pairing for ordinary headphones; PS5 does not support that route for game audio.

The decisive specification is not whether a headset says “wireless” or “Bluetooth.” It is whether the PS5 receives a supported USB, PlayStation Link or analog audio connection from the complete headset setup, including its adapter and microphone path.
