PS5 plays the overwhelming majority of PS4 games, but it does not read original PS1, PS2 or PS3 discs. A PS4 disc works only in a PS5 with a disc drive, while digital PS4 purchases appear in the owning account’s game library. Older-generation games are available only when a particular title has been released separately through the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog, either as a download or a stream.
That distinction matters: a catalog classic, remaster or PS5 upgrade is a different product from running the original disc. Availability, delivery method and membership requirements vary by title and region, so check the live listing for the exact game before buying hardware, an upgrade or a subscription.
At a glance: what each PlayStation generation does on PS5
| Original generation | How it works on PS5 | Limits to expect |
|---|---|---|
| PS4 | The overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games can be played. Use a disc in a PS5 with a disc drive, or download a digital purchase from the account library. | A small number are marked PS4-only. Some compatible games can have missing features or errors. Game Boost benefits are title-specific, so do not assume a particular frame rate or resolution. |
| PS3 | Original discs are unsupported. Selected PS3 games in the Classics Catalog can be streamed in supported markets and plans. | The current United States catalog describes its PS3 classics as streaming-only. The title, country and membership plan determine whether a game is offered. |
| PS2 | Original discs do not run natively. Selected PS2 classics may be offered as catalog downloads or streams, depending on the title. | A catalog edition is not the original PS2 disc running in the PS5. Check the current regional listing. |
| PS1 | Original discs do not run natively. Selected PS1 classics may be available through the Classics Catalog. | Availability and delivery method vary by game and region. |
Can you play PS4 games on PS5?
Yes. Compatibility covers the overwhelming majority of the PS4 library. Sony said at PS5 launch in 2020 that more than 99 percent of the 4,000-plus PS4 games available then would be playable. That was a launch-era estimate, not a current measurement. Current PlayStation support describes the result more cautiously as “the overwhelming majority of the 4,000+ PS4 games.”

Using a PS4 disc
Insert the disc into a PS5 model equipped with a disc drive, then install and update the game as prompted. The disc remains the license: it must be inserted whenever you start the installed game. A PS4 disc cannot be used with the PS5 Digital Edition because that console has no disc drive.

Using a digital PS4 game
Sign in to the account that bought the game and open its game library. Compatible purchases can be downloaded to the PS5 without buying the PS4 version again. A title can still be marked PS4-only, and compatibility does not guarantee that every PS4 feature behaves identically.
What “compatible” does not promise
- A small set of games is explicitly labeled PS4-only.
- Some otherwise compatible titles can show errors or lose individual features.
- Game Boost can improve selected games, but its effect is specific to the title; verify the game’s own information rather than assuming a universal performance mode.
Do PS1, PS2 or PS3 discs work in a PS5?
No. The PS5 does not provide native backward compatibility for original PS1, PS2 or PS3 discs. This remains true even for a PS5 with a disc drive: inserting an older-generation disc does not turn it into a playable PS5 game.
Why a Classics Catalog listing is different
When an older game appears in the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog, Sony is supplying a separately packaged digital version. Depending on the game, that version may be downloaded to the console or streamed from the service. It is not the console reading your original disc, and owning the disc alone does not grant access to every catalog release.
How the Classics Catalog works
On PS5, open the PlayStation Plus area, choose Benefits, and then select Classics Catalog. You need a membership plan that includes the catalog, and the correct plan can differ by market. The current United States membership information places the Classics Catalog and cloud streaming among Premium benefits; other regions can use different plan names, prices or lineups.
Download versus stream
- Download: The catalog supplies a local version that is installed on the console. The exact entitlement and any play limits follow the listing for that game.
- Stream: The game runs in the cloud and requires an active connection and a plan that supports streaming. You do not receive a playable original-disc image simply because the title is listed.
Some classics have only one of these delivery options. Catalog entries change, and a game available in one country may be absent or offered differently in another. Use the live game finder and read the individual title page before subscribing or assuming a disc will be useful.
Streaming connection and feature requirements
PlayStation says Classics Catalog streaming requires broadband of at least 5 Mbps. For 1080p output, the game must support that resolution and the connection should be at least 15 Mbps. If the connection falls below the required level, the stream can reduce resolution.

Streaming also disables or restricts several console features: Remote Play, Share Play, broadcasting, PS VR, and use of a mouse or keyboard. These restrictions apply to the streaming session, not to every locally installed PS5 or PS4 game.

Confusion usually comes from treating four separate products as one form of backward compatibility.
| Path | What you actually play | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| PS4 disc on PS5 | The PS4 version installed from the disc. | An eligible PS4 disc and a PS5 with a disc drive; keep the disc inserted to play. |
| Digital PS4 purchase | The compatible PS4 version from the account library. | The purchasing account and a compatible title; download it to the PS5. |
| PS5 upgrade | A separate native PS5 version, when the publisher offers one. | An eligible PS4 entitlement. The upgrade can be free or paid, can be time-limited, and requires an internet connection. A disc-based upgrade also requires the eligible disc and a PS5 with a disc drive. |
| Classics Catalog edition | A separately supplied PS1, PS2 or PS3 classic, delivered by download or streaming according to its listing. | The required PlayStation Plus plan and a title available in your region. |
You do not need a PS5 upgrade to play a compatible PS4 version. An upgrade may add PS5-specific performance or features, but its price and eligibility are controlled by the individual game. Before purchasing add-ons for a PS4 game, PlayStation advises starting the game on PS5 first so you can confirm that the version and features you expect work correctly.
Which PS5 model should you choose for an existing disc library?
Choose a PS5 with a disc drive if you own PS4 discs
This is the only PS5 route for using a physical PS4 collection. It also provides the hardware needed for any disc-based PS4-to-PS5 upgrade. It still does not add native PS1, PS2 or PS3 disc support.
Choose the PS5 Digital Edition if your library is digital
Digital PS4 purchases can be downloaded from the account library, subject to compatibility. Physical PS4 discs cannot be converted into licenses for the Digital Edition merely by owning them.
How to check a specific game before you buy or subscribe
- Identify the original version. Confirm whether your copy is a PS4 disc, a digital PS4 purchase, or an original PS1, PS2 or PS3 disc. Do not treat a remaster or remake as the original release.
- Match the console to the medium. A PS4 disc requires a PS5 with a disc drive. A digital purchase requires access to the account that owns it.
- Check the title’s compatibility label. Look for PS4-only warnings, known feature limitations and any Game Boost note. Avoid assuming that a general “PS4 works on PS5” statement applies identically to every game.
- Separate compatibility from an upgrade. Determine whether you are launching the PS4 version or purchasing a distinct PS5 version. Read whether the upgrade is free, paid or time-limited.
- For an older game, open the live Classics Catalog listing. On PS5, use PlayStation Plus > Benefits > Classics Catalog, then search for the exact title and region. Confirm whether it is downloadable or streaming-only and which plan includes it.
- Check your connection for streaming. Plan for at least 5 Mbps broadband, and at least 15 Mbps when 1080p is supported and desired. Remember that streaming disables Remote Play, Share Play, broadcasting, PS VR and mouse or keyboard use.
Controllers and accessories
Supported PS4 games on PS5 can work with the DualSense, DUALSHOCK 4 and licensed third-party gamepads. PS5 games require a DualSense. For PS VR on PS5, PlayStation recommends DUALSHOCK 4 for the best experience. A controller does not change disc compatibility: no accessory makes an original PS1, PS2 or PS3 disc playable.

Common problems and the right fix
“My PS4 disc is not recognized.”
First confirm that the console is a disc-drive model and that the disc is actually a PS4 release. A PS5 Digital Edition cannot read it. If the game is supported, install updates and check the title’s compatibility information for exceptions.
“I own an old PlayStation disc. Why is there no download?”
Original PS1, PS2 and PS3 discs do not automatically create a digital entitlement on PS5. Search the regional Classics Catalog for a separately offered version. If no listing exists, the disc itself is not a supported PS5 route.
“The catalog game is listed, but I cannot download it.”
Check whether that title is streaming-only, whether your membership includes the required benefit, and whether the listing is available in your country. Some games provide only one delivery method.

Compatibility is not a promise that every feature is unchanged. Check the game’s support information, install the latest update and test the base game before buying add-ons. If you expected native PS5 features, verify whether a separate upgrade is available.
“Streaming quality keeps dropping.”
Measure the connection against the 5 Mbps minimum and the 15 Mbps target for supported 1080p streaming. Resolution can be reduced when the connection falls below the required level. A downloaded catalog version, when offered, avoids the stream’s connection and feature restrictions.
Quick Recap
The practical answer for each reader
- Can I play PS4 games on PS5? Yes, in most cases. Use a disc-drive PS5 for discs or download compatible digital purchases from the owning account.
- Do PS4 discs work on PS5 Digital Edition? No. The Digital Edition has no disc drive.
- Can I play PS1 games on PS5? Only selected titles offered separately through the Classics Catalog; original PS1 discs are not natively supported.
- Can PS5 play PS2 or PS3 discs? No. Selected PS2 or PS3 classics may be offered digitally or by streaming through the catalog, depending on title and region.
- Do I need PlayStation Plus to play old games? You do not need it for a compatible PS4 game you already own. You do need the appropriate PlayStation Plus benefit for a classic obtained through the Classics Catalog, and streaming requires a plan that supports streaming.
