Short answer: A PS5 cannot play original PS1 or PS2 discs, and PSP UMDs are not a PS5 format. You can play selected games from those generations only when Sony has released a compatible digital edition, remaster or remake, or included the title in the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog. Availability depends on the exact game, your country, subscription tier and whether Sony still lists the title.
Think of this as title-specific re-release access, not universal backward compatibility. Before buying a subscription or assuming an old favorite will work, check its current listing in the regional PlayStation catalog.
Can I play my old PS1 or PS2 discs on PS5?
No. Sony’s PS5 safety guide for the disc-equipped model states that PlayStation-format and PS2-format software cannot be played from disc. The digital-edition PS5 has no disc drive at all, so it cannot read those discs either. A disc that worked in an original PlayStation, PS2 or another older console does not become usable simply because you insert it into a PS5.

There is no supported way to insert a UMD or use a PSP cartridge as PS5 software. Any PSP game you play on PS5 must be supplied as a separate compatible digital release.

In your hands, these dynamic vibrations can simulate the feeling of everything from environments to the recoil of different weapons. .Operating temperature : 41 °F to 95 °F (5 °C to 35 °C)
- Adaptive triggers - Experience varying levels of force and tension as you interact with your in-game gear and environments. From pulling back an increasingly tight bowstring to hitting the brakes on a speeding car, feel physically connected to your on-screen actions.
- Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
- DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
What the disc limitation means
- There is no PS5 disc-backward-compatibility mode for original PS1 games.
- There is no PS5 disc-backward-compatibility mode for original PS2 games.
- An adapter, external USB drive or DualSense controller cannot make unsupported original media playable.
- Keeping the original disc may still be useful for the original hardware, but it does not provide a PS5 license for a digital edition.
What counts as a playable older game on PS5?
Older games reach PS5 through several different products. They are easy to confuse because all may appear in a PlayStation store or subscription menu, but they are not the same technically or financially.
| Route | What you receive | How access works | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Digital classic | A separately released version of a selected PS1 or PSP game, and occasionally another legacy title | Download it to the PS5 when your account and region are eligible | Only individually offered games are included; the original disc is not required or recognized |
| PS2 remaster or remake | A new PS5/PS4 product based on a PS2 game | Buy or claim that specific release, then download it | This is a modern re-release, not playback of the original PS2 disc |
| Classics Catalog download | Selected older games included with an eligible PlayStation Plus plan | Download while the title is listed and your membership is active | The catalog, plan requirements and end dates can change |
| Classics Catalog stream | Selected original PS2-era titles delivered from Sony’s servers | Stream from a supported market and subscription tier | Streaming depends on broadband quality, region and the title’s current listing |
A game can therefore be “playable on PS5” without being available on disc, without being downloadable, or without being included in every PlayStation Plus plan.
Which PS1 games can you play?
PS5 access to PS1 games is limited to selected digital classics and other separately released editions. Sony has offered original PlayStation titles as downloads through its Classics Catalog, but it has not made the entire PS1 library compatible. A title’s existence on the original PlayStation does not establish that a PS5 version exists.
How PS1 availability is presented
If a PS1 game is currently offered, the PlayStation store or Classics Catalog identifies the supported product. That listing is the meaningful compatibility check: it tells you whether the game is downloadable, tied to a subscription, supported in your country and available on your console. Do not infer support from a disc label, an old save file or a listing seen in another country.

What to verify before choosing a PS1 release
- Whether the listing is for a PS5-compatible digital product rather than a soundtrack, video, trial or PS4-only item.
- Whether access requires PlayStation Plus Premium or another plan in your market.
- Whether the title is a one-time purchase or only available while a subscription remains active.
- Whether the listing carries an end date or other availability notice.
Which PS2 games can you play?
PS2 games appear on PS5 in two distinct forms: downloadable remasters or remakes, and selected original PS2 titles available for streaming in supported markets. Neither form reads an original PS2 disc.
Remasters and remakes
A remaster or remake is sold as its own digital game. It may contain updated graphics, controls, performance or other changes, and its store page identifies the platforms it supports. Buying such a product gives you that re-released version; it does not create a general license for every PS2 game or for the disc you already own.
Original PS2 titles offered for streaming
Sony has also made selected original PS2 titles streamable through PlayStation Plus Premium in certain markets. Streaming and downloading are different: the game runs on Sony’s servers and sends video and audio to your PS5, while your controller inputs travel back over the internet. If the listing offers only streaming, you cannot install that title for offline play through the catalog.

Why a PS2 list from another site may mislead you
Older announcements describe the service structure at launch, while current catalogs change. A game shown in a historical article may have left the catalog, may be offered only in a different country or may have moved between plans. Treat a live regional listing as the authority for the current status.

Which PSP games can you play?
Selected original PSP games have been released as digital downloads in the Classics Catalog. These are prepared for PlayStation’s current software system; they are not UMD images that the PS5 reads directly.
PSP availability is especially title- and region-specific. Even if a PSP game appears in a catalog in one country, that does not prove it is listed for your account. Check the title while signed in to the account and storefront you will actually use. If no compatible listing appears, the original UMD cannot be substituted.
How to check a particular game on your PS5
Use both the console’s catalog and Sony’s official PlayStation Plus games finder. The catalog is dynamic, so perform this check immediately before you subscribe or purchase.

- From the PS5 Games home screen, open PlayStation Plus.
- Select Benefits.
- Open Classics Catalog.
- Search for the exact game title. Check the product description for its platform, download or stream method and any regional or membership notes.
- Confirm that your current PlayStation Plus plan includes the title. Current US PlayStation materials identify Classics Catalog access as a Premium benefit; names and tiers can differ in other markets.
- Search the same title in the official PlayStation Plus games finder for your country. If the two results differ, use the listing attached to your account’s region and the current date.
If the game is not listed through either route, assume that your original disc or UMD will not work on PS5. Do not rely on a video showing a title from a different storefront or an announcement that has no current product page.

Download versus streaming: requirements and trade-offs
| Consideration | Downloadable classic or re-release | Streamed catalog title |
|---|---|---|
| Internet connection during play | Needed for downloading and license checks, but gameplay can generally continue locally after installation according to the product’s terms | Required continuously; the game is rendered remotely |
| Minimum connection stated by Sony | No universal gameplay speed is specified in the cited catalog guidance | At least 5 Mbps for streaming |
| 1080p streaming | Not applicable as a streaming requirement | Requires a game that supports 1080p and at least 15 Mbps |
| Storage use | Uses PS5 storage | Uses little or no game-install storage, but depends on network conditions |
| Access after catalog removal | A separately purchased release normally remains associated with that purchase; subscription catalog rights can end | Ends if the title leaves the catalog, your plan no longer qualifies or the service is unavailable |
The 5 Mbps and 15 Mbps figures are Sony’s stated streaming requirements, not guarantees of compatibility or image quality. Wi-Fi congestion, latency, household traffic and regional server conditions can still affect play.
Subscription, region and catalog changes
PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog access is not a permanent global roster. Sony says titles can vary by membership plan and country, and some games have end dates or other availability changes. Current US support pages place the Classics Catalog under Premium, but the service name, tier structure and benefits should be checked for your market.
A subscription also does not grant every PS1, PS2 or PSP game. It grants access only to eligible titles that are currently included in the plan. If you cancel, downgrade or lose access to a title that has left the catalog, subscription-based play may stop. A separately purchased digital re-release follows the terms shown on its own product page instead.
How to choose the right route
Choose a digital purchase when
- You want access that is not dependent on a changing subscription catalog.
- The game has an official PS5-compatible remaster, remake or standalone classic release.
- You prefer local installation instead of continuous streaming.
Choose Classics Catalog access when
- The exact title is currently listed for your country’s eligible Premium plan.
- You already maintain that membership for other benefits.
- You accept that catalog rights and availability may change.
Choose streaming only when
- The game is listed as streamable rather than downloadable in your market.
- Your connection consistently meets Sony’s stated speed requirements.
- You are comfortable with latency, image-quality variation and the need for an active connection.
Common mistakes and what to do instead
“The PS5 is backward compatible, so my PS1 disc should work.”
Most PS5 backward-compatibility messaging concerns PS4 software, not automatic support for every earlier PlayStation format. Check the specific digital product instead of inserting the disc.

“A PS2 remaster proves the PS2 disc is supported.”
A remaster or remake is a separate release. Install that product if you want to play it on PS5; the original disc remains unsupported.
“A PSP game in a video or foreign store must be available to me.”
Catalog visibility is regional and can change. Search while signed in to your own storefront and verify the current plan requirement.
“The 2020 launch FAQ says no, so no older game can ever be played.”
Sony’s November 9, 2020 PS5 launch FAQ said: “Can I play original PlayStation, PS2, or PS3 games on PS5? No, PS5 will play PS5 games and more than 99% of PS4 games, including PlayStation VR games, only.” That was a launch-era statement about original software. Later Classics Catalog releases created selected digital and streaming routes, so the dated FAQ should not be read as a promise that every later re-release is impossible—or as evidence that all legacy games are supported.
A practical decision checklist
- Identify the exact game and original platform: PS1, PS2 or PSP.
- Discard the original-disc or UMD option; those media formats are not supported by PS5.
- Search the current regional PlayStation store and Classics Catalog.
- Record whether the result is a purchase, download included with Premium or stream-only listing.
- Check the listed platform, country, membership tier and any removal date.
- For streaming, test the connection against Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum, or 15 Mbps when 1080p streaming is intended and the game supports it.
- Only then decide whether the digital release, subscription or streaming route matches how you want to play.
Bottom line
PS5 backward compatibility for PS1, PS2 and PSP is selective and product-based. Original PS1 and PS2 discs and PSP UMDs do not work. Selected games can be played through official digital classics, PS2 remasters or remakes, and Classics Catalog downloads or streams. Because Sony changes catalogs by region, plan and date, verify every title in the live listing for your own account before treating it as PS5-compatible.
