For convincing HDR in an open-world game, start with the display, not the game slider. Select the display’s low-latency Game mode, enable its enhanced 4K/HDR input option, turn off vividness and dynamic-contrast processing while calibrating, then run the console’s own HDR setup. Finish by matching each game’s paper-white and peak-luminance controls to the screen. This preserves bright sun, clouds and reflections without erasing detail in foliage, caves and night scenes.
Use a complete 4K-capable signal path. Console output settings, the television or monitor input mode, firmware, room lighting and the HDMI cable all affect the result. A certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable is the appropriate choice when you want 4K, 120Hz and HDR together; it removes a bandwidth or handshake bottleneck, but it cannot make a panel brighter.
What a realistic HDR image is supposed to look like
HDR is not a “make everything brighter” switch. It expands the range between the darkest reproducible shadow and the brightest highlight, allowing a game to show a sun glint, cloud edge or explosion while retaining texture in nearby surfaces. Realism comes from that separation and from smooth gradation, not from pushing every luminance control to its maximum.

Prepare the display before touching console settings
1. Select the low-latency picture mode
Choose the television or monitor’s Game mode (or its equivalent low-latency mode). This reduces processing that can add input delay and often exposes the input controls needed for 4K and HDR. Menu names differ by manufacturer, so look for an option associated with enhanced, deep-color, UHD-color or 4K bandwidth on the HDMI socket used by the console.
2. Enable the enhanced 4K/HDR input mode
Many displays have a per-input toggle that permits the full signal bandwidth. Enable it on the exact HDMI port connected to the PS5 or Xbox Series X. If the setting is left in a compatibility mode, the console may report that HDR or 120Hz is unavailable even though the panel supports it.
3. Temporarily remove picture processing
Disable extra vividness, dynamic contrast, automatic contrast, dynamic color and similar enhancement controls while calibrating. They alter the test pattern from one scene to another, making it impossible to tell whether clipping or crushed detail comes from the game or the display. You can test a restrained enhancement later, but establish a neutral baseline first.

4. Set a sensible viewing baseline
Use your usual room lighting and seating distance. HDR adjustment screens are intended to be viewed from the normal position, not with your face against the panel. Extreme sunlight in the room can make a correct image seem dim; a dark room can make the same image seem excessively bright. Keep the display’s brightness and black-level controls at their normal calibrated values rather than compensating for a temporary lighting change.
PS5 HDR setup and verification
Sony’s official PS5 4K resolution guidance starts with the whole chain: the display, the selected input and the cable must all support the desired signal. On the console, use the video-output settings to let the system detect the display’s capabilities, then run the built-in HDR adjustment screens.
- Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
- Check the display information shown for resolution and HDR support. If the console does not identify HDR, recheck the display’s enhanced input mode and the HDMI connection before changing game settings.
- Set resolution to Automatic, or choose a 2160p-capable output when you need to select it explicitly. Automatic allows the console to use the highest mode the connected display reports.
- Set HDR to On When Supported (wording can vary slightly with system software). This keeps SDR titles from being forced through an HDR conversion while allowing compatible games to use HDR.
- Choose Adjust HDR and follow all three screens from your normal viewing position. Adjust until the symbol is barely visible as instructed by the pattern, then repeat for the remaining screens rather than applying one arbitrary brightness value to all of them.
- Confirm the result in an HDR game with both a bright outdoor scene and a dark interior. If one looks wrong, return to the display input and picture settings before repeatedly moving the PS5 sliders.
How to confirm 4K and HDR are actually active
Use the PS5 video-output information and an HDR game’s picture indicator or in-game menu to verify the mode. A 4K menu alone does not prove that HDR is active. If HDR disappears when you select a high-refresh option, inspect the HDMI port’s enhanced mode and the cable before assuming the console is faulty.

Xbox Series X HDR setup and verification
Xbox provides a capability report and a dedicated calibration tool. Use both: the report identifies what the current signal path can do, while the calibration tool establishes the console baseline that games will receive.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Open Settings > General > TV & display options.
- Select 4K TV details. Review each capability line, including 4K resolution, HDR and high-refresh support. A missing check mark points to a display-input, cable or receiver limitation in the chain.
- Under the same TV and display options area, enable the supported HDR and high-refresh modes. Do not enable a mode that the capability screen does not confirm.
- Run the Xbox HDR calibration tool. Follow each pattern at your normal seating position, changing the control only until the pattern reaches the instructed threshold.
- Launch an HDR game and apply its own paper-white, peak-brightness or luminance controls. The Xbox calibration is a baseline; it cannot account for the different tone mapping and UI targets used by every title.
When Xbox reports a capability you cannot see in a game
Game support is separate from console support. A Series X can report HDR and 120Hz while a particular title offers only 60Hz or uses a different HDR implementation. Check that game’s video menu and compare a known outdoor highlight with a shadow-heavy scene before changing global console settings.
Choose the HDMI cable and signal path correctly
For 4K at 120Hz with HDR, use a cable carrying the official Ultra High Speed HDMI certification. HDMI Licensing Administrator identifies this certification as supporting bandwidth up to 48Gbps, which is the relevant class for the highest console signal combination in this setup.

| Signal-path component | What to check | What a failure looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Console | 4K output, HDR and high-refresh options are enabled only when supported | HDR or 120Hz options are absent or revert after restarting |
| Display HDMI port | Enhanced 4K, deep-color or equivalent high-bandwidth mode is enabled on the used input | 4K works but HDR or 120Hz is unavailable |
| HDMI cable | Certified Ultra High Speed label; undamaged connectors and a secure fit | Intermittent black screens, sparkles, handshake errors or a lower negotiated mode |
| AV receiver or switch | Every intermediate device must support the same 4K/HDR/120Hz combination | The console works when connected directly but not through the receiver |
Connect the console directly to the display while troubleshooting. If the direct connection succeeds, the receiver or switch is the limiting link. Certification prevents a cable bandwidth or handshake limit; it does not increase the panel’s peak brightness, improve local dimming or repair inaccurate tone mapping.
Tune each open-world game after console calibration
Paper-white and user-interface brightness
Paper white is the reference brightness for ordinary surfaces and readable text. Raise it only until menus, subtitles and signs are clear against their backgrounds. If text glows or the HUD looks like a light source, lower it. A readable interface is not evidence that the entire scene should be brighter.

Peak brightness or maximum luminance
Set the game’s peak-brightness or maximum-luminance value to the display’s real HDR capability when the game asks for one. Use the panel specification or its calibrated mode as the reference, not a marketing “dynamic” number. If the game provides no luminance guidance, use its test pattern and prioritize highlight detail over a spectacular but clipped sky.

Check clipping in bright scenes
Inspect sun glints on water, bright clouds, metal reflections and muzzle flashes. Details should remain distinguishable inside the highlight. When several bright objects merge into a flat white patch, peak brightness, paper white or a display tone-mapping control is too aggressive.
Check shadow detail in dark scenes
Move into dense foliage, a cave and a night scene. You should see shape and texture without turning black areas gray. If leaves and rocks disappear, first undo any raised black-level or crushed-shadow setting on the display, then revisit the game’s HDR calibration. Do not brighten the whole image until the sky clips.
Avoid double tone mapping
Tone mapping converts game luminance values to what the panel can show. Let one stage do that work whenever possible. If the game offers a “hard” or HGIG-style target and the display has a matching option, use the combination recommended by the game or display documentation; otherwise leave the display’s dynamic remapping restrained while calibrating. Two aggressive tone-mapping stages can flatten highlights, while two restrictive stages can make the image look dull.
Why HDR looks washed out, too dark or inconsistent
| Symptom | Likely cause | Recovery sequence |
|---|---|---|
| Gray blacks and faded colors | HDR is being processed in the wrong input mode, or vivid/dynamic processing is fighting the game | Re-select Game mode, enable the input’s enhanced 4K/HDR option, disable extra processing and rerun the console pattern |
| Very dark interiors with missing detail | Black-level mismatch, crushed-shadow setting or an overly restrictive HDR calibration | Restore the display’s normal black level, rerun the PS5 or Xbox pattern from the viewing position, then check the game’s shadow screen |
| White skies with no cloud texture | Peak brightness or tone mapping is clipping highlights | Lower the game’s peak-luminance target or reduce display tone-mapping intervention, then inspect clouds and sun glints again |
| HDR works at 60Hz but not 120Hz | The HDMI port is not in enhanced mode, or a cable/receiver cannot carry the combined signal | Connect directly, enable enhanced input mode and use a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable |
| One game looks wrong while another is fine | Different HDR mastering, paper-white defaults or slider scales | Keep the console baseline and calibrate that title’s own HDR screen instead of changing the system globally |
PS5 and Xbox Series X: what differs in practice
| Calibration area | PS5 | Xbox Series X |
|---|---|---|
| Capability check | Video-output information in the Screen and Video settings, with the display and cable chain checked as Sony’s 4K guide describes | Settings > General > TV & display options > 4K TV details |
| Console HDR workflow | Use the PS5 HDR adjustment screens and follow their visibility instructions | Run the Xbox HDR calibration tool after enabling supported modes |
| 4K/120Hz verification | Confirm the reported output mode and test the display’s high-bandwidth input | Use the capability checks, then verify the selected high-refresh mode in the display and game |
| Tone-mapping controls | Display processing and each game’s HDR sliders determine the final mapping | Display processing and each game’s HDR sliders determine the final mapping |
| Game-slider behavior | Console calibration is only a starting point; title-specific paper white and peak values still apply | Console calibration is only a starting point; title-specific paper white and peak values still apply |
The practical distinction is workflow, not a universal picture-quality winner. PS5 emphasizes its HDR adjustment screens alongside automatic or 2160p-capable output. Xbox pairs the capability report with a named calibration tool. Both still depend on the same display discipline, complete signal path and title-specific tuning.
A repeatable calibration checklist
- Identify the HDMI input used by the console and enable its enhanced 4K/HDR mode.
- Select Game or the display’s low-latency equivalent.
- Turn off vividness and dynamic-contrast processing during calibration.
- Connect the console directly with a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable if 4K/120Hz HDR is the goal.
- Run the PS5 HDR adjustment screens or the Xbox HDR calibration tool from the normal seating position.
- Verify the platform’s capability screen reports the expected 4K, HDR and high-refresh features.
- Open an HDR game and set paper white so text is readable without glowing.
- Match peak brightness or maximum luminance to the display’s actual capability.
- Inspect highlights for clipping and dark foliage, caves and night scenes for crushed detail.
- Save the game profile, then repeat only the title-specific slider work for another game.
What cannot be fixed with a setting
No slider can create brightness that the panel cannot produce, add local dimming to a display that lacks it or restore detail already clipped by a game’s HDR master. A certified cable cannot upgrade the panel either. When the console reports the expected capabilities and the display is in the correct input mode, remaining differences between games are usually intentional differences in HDR implementation rather than a defective console.
