Can you hook up a PS4 without HDMI? Not directly: PS4 sends video through HDMI and has no built-in composite video output. If your TV only has yellow, red, and white RCA inputs, you can try an active HDMI-to-composite converter. Other options are PS Remote Play on a supported device or repairing a damaged console port; optical audio does not provide video.
Why a PS4 needs HDMI for video
Sony’s setup instructions connect the PS4’s HDMI OUT port to a display’s HDMI input, and Sony’s PS4 FAQ says the console transmits video and audio over HDMI. Sony’s PS4 setup guide and its PS4: The Ultimate FAQ – North America document this output design.
That means a basic cable that merely changes an HDMI plug to RCA plugs will not work. HDMI carries a digital signal; composite RCA video is analog. A converter with active electronics is needed to translate between them.

Which PS4 connection options work without a direct HDMI-to-TV connection?

Connecting a PS4 to an old TV with red, white, and yellow cables
Use an active HDMI-to-composite converter if the television has composite RCA inputs but no HDMI. The converter must accept HDMI from the console and output composite video and audio in a format the TV supports. An AVPro Edge datasheet describes this converter category, but that does not establish compatibility for every converter, PS4, TV standard, or game.

- Check the TV for a yellow composite video input and red/white audio inputs. If the TV has HDMI, use HDMI instead.
- Choose an active converter whose input is HDMI and whose outputs match the TV’s composite inputs. Confirm the supported video format and whether the converter needs separate power.
- Connect the PS4’s HDMI OUT to the converter’s HDMI input, then connect the converter’s RCA outputs to the corresponding TV inputs.
- Power the converter if required and select the TV input used for the RCA connection.
- If there is no picture, check the converter’s format and HDCP compatibility before concluding that the PS4 or TV is faulty.
Do not confuse a converter with a passive HDMI-to-RCA cable: changing connector shape alone does not convert digital video to analog.
What to check if an HDMI-to-composite converter shows no picture
HDCP can prevent output through a device that is not HDCP-compatible. Sony says HDCP is enabled by default on PS4 HDMI output. For gameplay, you can turn it off at Settings > System; changing the setting closes applications. This may help with some converter or capture-device combinations, but it is not a universal fix.

Blu-ray, DVD, and DRM-protected streaming playback require HDCP enabled. If the PS4 prompts you to enable HDCP for that content, a converter that cannot handle the required protection may not work for it. See Sony’s HDCP guidance.

PS Remote Play displays the PS4 screen on a supported computer or mobile device over a network. It can be useful when you need another screen and have network access, but it is not a cable connection to a TV. Enable Remote Play on the console and follow the current setup requirements for the device and app. PlayStation’s Remote Play connection troubleshooting guidance covers requirements such as current software, signing in with the same account, primary-console activation, and keeping the console online, including in Rest Mode where applicable.

Some games and device-dependent features are not supported. Disc playback and protected streaming video also have restrictions, so Remote Play is not a universal substitute for viewing every type of PS4 content.

No. The DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL) port, when present, carries audio to compatible sound equipment; it cannot send video to a TV. Sony notes that CUH-2000 series PS4 consoles do not have this optical terminal. Check the model’s rear-port layout before looking for it; Sony’s PS4 audio output settings guide explains the model-specific audio options.

If the PS4 HDMI port is damaged
An RCA cable or optical connection cannot bypass a broken HDMI video port. Sony directs users with screen-connection trouble to PlayStation Repairs. If you use a qualified repair provider instead, ask for a diagnosis before approving repair; the available fix and cost depend on the specific damage.

Quick troubleshooting when the screen is blank
- The TV has HDMI: Connect the PS4 HDMI OUT to the TV’s HDMI input with a known-good cable, then select that input. Check the cable and connections before buying an adapter.
- The TV has only composite RCA: Use an active HDMI-to-composite converter, not a passive plug adapter. Confirm input/output direction, format support, power needs, and HDCP compatibility.
- A converter works for some content but not other content: Consider HDCP requirements. Protected playback requires HDCP enabled, even though gameplay can be configured with it off.
- The HDMI socket is visibly damaged or connection checks do not resolve the problem: Contact PlayStation Repairs or a qualified repair provider.
