Short answer: PS5 is the better choice for most PS4 games, but it is not a universal player for original PlayStation discs. Sony says PS5 supports thousands of PS4 titles, while a PS5 cannot play PS3 discs. Selected PS1, PS2 and PS3-era games are available through the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog on both PS4 and PS5, depending on your country, membership tier and the individual title. If you own PS4 game discs, you need a PS5 model with a disc drive; the PS5 Digital Edition cannot read them.
The important distinction is between backward compatibility (running a game you own) and the Classics Catalog (accessing selected older games through a subscription). Performance boosts, PS5 upgrades and save transfers are all title-specific, so check the exact game before buying or switching consoles.
PS4 vs. PS5 for classic games at a glance
| What you want to play | PS4 | PS5 | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Digitally owned PS4 games | Runs PS4 versions | Most PS4 games run on PS5; some may receive Game Boost or a separate PS5 version | Game listing, upgrade terms and save-transfer policy |
| Physical PS4 games | Runs the disc on a compatible PS4 | Requires a PS5 with a disc drive; the disc remains inserted while playing | Do not choose the PS5 Digital Edition for a disc collection |
| Original PS3 discs | Not addressed by the cited PS5 guidance | PS5 does not support PS3 discs | Use a supported re-release or Classics Catalog option instead |
| Selected PS1, PS2 or PS3 classics | Available through the Classics Catalog where offered | Available through the Classics Catalog where offered | Country, PlayStation Plus plan, title availability and download/stream option |
| Streaming Classics Catalog games | Requires a supported plan and connection | Requires a supported plan and connection | At least 5 Mbps; 15 Mbps for 1080p when the game supports it |
That table is the practical difference: PS5 improves the experience for a large PS4 library, but neither console should be treated as a blanket solution for every disc from earlier PlayStation generations.
What “classic PlayStation games” means here
People use “classic” to describe two different things. A PS4 game may already be several years old, yet it is still a PS4-generation title and falls under PS5 backward compatibility. An original PlayStation, PlayStation 2 or PlayStation 3 release is a legacy-generation game, and its availability depends on a re-release, a digital entitlement or the Classics Catalog.

Sony’s current backward-compatibility guidance describes PS5 as compatible with the majority of PS4 games, comprising thousands of titles. Sony’s October 2020 launch article gave the historical estimate that “more than 99 percent of the 4000+ games available on PS4” would be playable on PS5 at launch. That was a launch-era company statement, not a current independent audit, so it should not be read as a promise that every PS4 title behaves identically today.
The same support guidance explicitly says that PS5 consoles do not support PlayStation 3 discs. The available official information does not provide a complete PS1- and PS2-disc compatibility matrix for every PS4 and PS5 model. Consequently, you should not assume that an original PS1 or PS2 disc will work simply because the game is old, or because a modern digital version exists. Check the exact release and the console’s current support information.
How each console gives you access to older games
Digital PS4 purchases
If a PS4 game is in your PlayStation account library and is compatible, you can download the PS4 version on PS5 after signing in to the account that owns it. This is the cleanest route for a digital collection because there is no disc to insert and no need to repurchase the PS4 version. Availability can still be affected by account region, delisting or other normal account conditions.
On PS4, the same purchase runs as the native PS4 version. On PS5, the game may load faster or run more smoothly in some cases, but Sony warns that a compatible game can still have unavailable PS4 features or errors and unexpected behavior. Treat compatibility as “playable,” not as a guarantee of identical performance or feature parity.
Physical PS4 game discs
A compatible PS4 disc works on a PS5 model equipped with a disc drive. The disc acts as the ownership check, so it must remain in the console whenever you start and play the installed game. A PS5 Digital Edition has no disc drive and cannot use PS4 game discs at all.
This distinction matters when choosing between PS5 models. If your library is partly or entirely physical, select a disc-drive PS5. If you own only digital games, the Digital Edition can access compatible digital PS4 purchases, but it cannot be used later as a disc reader if you change your collection.
Subscription-based classics
The supported official route covered for selected older-generation games is the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog. Sony’s US catalog instructions explain access on both PS4 and PS5. Depending on the title, you may be able to download it, stream it, or choose between those options. A qualifying PlayStation Plus plan is required; on the cited US pages, PlayStation Plus Premium is the tier associated with the Classics Catalog and cloud streaming.

The selection can change, and availability differs by country. Check the listing in your own account before relying on a particular game for a trip, offline play or long-term access.

Using the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog
The basic process is similar on PS4 and PS5, although menu wording and placement can change with system software updates:
- Sign in to the PlayStation account that has the eligible PlayStation Plus membership.
- Open PlayStation Plus from the console home screen and select the Classics Catalog.
- Browse or search for the specific classic game rather than assuming that an entire series is included.
- Open the game’s product page and check whether it offers Download, Stream or both.
- Choose the available option and follow the on-screen installation or streaming prompts.
- Before starting a long download or relying on remote play, verify that the game is available in your country and that the title’s listing still shows an active entitlement.
Streaming requirements and limitations
Sony lists 5 Mbps as the minimum broadband speed for streaming Classics Catalog games. Streaming at 1080p requires at least 15 Mbps and a game that supports that resolution. Those figures describe connection requirements, not a guarantee of latency or image quality; Wi-Fi congestion, household traffic and distance to the streaming service can still affect play.
Sony also lists functions and devices that are not supported while streaming, including Remote Play, Share Play, broadcasting, PSVR and third-party controllers. If one of those features is essential, look for a downloadable version of the game or use a native installation instead of assuming that the streaming version will behave like a local copy.

What changes on PS5: Game Boost, upgrades and features
Game Boost is not a blanket remaster
Some PS4 games can use PS5 hardware through Game Boost for higher or smoother frame rates. This is a title-specific behavior, not a universal setting that transforms every PS4 game. Sony’s compatibility guidance also cautions that some PS4 features may be unavailable and that certain games may display errors or unexpected behavior on PS5.
Before buying a PS5 for one particular game, check the game’s current listing and recent support information. Look for a stated PS5 version, a named performance mode or a publisher notice rather than assuming that the console will automatically deliver a higher frame rate. If the game is central to your decision, keep the original PS4 installation available until you have confirmed that your saves and required features work on PS5.
A PS5 upgrade is a separate entitlement
Backward compatibility means the PS4 version runs on PS5. A PS5 upgrade means the publisher has made a separate PS5 version available. Sony’s upgrade instructions state that an eligible upgrade can be free, paid or limited to a particular period.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For a disc-based upgrade, you need a PS5 with a disc drive. The PS4 disc remains your proof of ownership, so a Digital Edition cannot complete that process. Sony also notes that the disc and your account may need to be from the same region. A PS4 game received as a PlayStation Plus benefit is not eligible for an upgrade unless the publisher or Sony specifically says otherwise.

Do not confuse an upgrade with a catalog entitlement. A game in the Classics Catalog is accessed under the subscription’s terms; it does not automatically give you a permanent PS5 purchase or an upgrade license for a separately sold PS4 release.
Save transfers depend on the game
Save compatibility between a PS4 version and a PS5 version is decided by the game’s developer. Sony’s 2020 PS4-on-PS5 guidance says the behavior varies by title. Some games offer a direct transfer, some require an in-game upload and download, and some do not carry progress to the upgraded version. Check the game’s own support page before deleting the PS4 installation or assuming that cloud storage alone will make the transfer work.

Choose PS5 with a disc drive when you own PS4 discs
This is the least ambiguous choice for a physical PS4 library. You retain access to compatible discs and can investigate a digital or disc-based PS5 upgrade when one exists. The disc-drive model also avoids the dead end created by the PS5 Digital Edition, which cannot read any PS4 disc you already own.

A Digital Edition makes sense when your games are digital purchases or subscription downloads and you do not intend to use physical PS4 media. Confirm ownership on the correct PlayStation account before switching consoles. If even a few essential games are disc-only, the absence of a drive is a practical limitation, not a minor inconvenience.
Keep PS4 when the catalog and your features are enough
For a player who already owns a PS4 and mainly wants selected Classics Catalog titles, PS4 can provide the same catalog route described for PS5, subject to plan, country and title availability. Moving to PS5 is most compelling when you also want PS4 backward compatibility with newer hardware, possible Game Boost improvements, faster system behavior or a PS5 version for a specific game. Those benefits should be evaluated title by title.
Do not buy either console expecting original-disc universality
If your main collection consists of original PS3 discs, PS5 is not a drop-in replacement because Sony explicitly says PS3 discs are unsupported. For PS1 and PS2 discs, the cited official material does not establish a complete compatibility table, so verify each game rather than purchasing on a generational assumption. A supported digital re-release or Classics Catalog listing is a different product from inserting the original disc.
A practical decision process before you switch
- Inventory the games. Separate digital PS4 purchases, physical PS4 discs, original PS1/PS2/PS3 discs and subscription-only titles.
- Identify the access method for each game. A digital purchase, a physical disc, a download from the Classics Catalog and a streaming entitlement have different requirements.
- Check the exact PS5 model. Physical PS4 games and disc-based upgrades require a disc drive.
- Search the current listing. Confirm whether the game is backward compatible, has a PS5 upgrade, appears in the Classics Catalog or is unavailable in your country.
- Check performance and saves. Look for title-specific Game Boost notes, feature warnings and the developer’s save-transfer instructions.
- Test before retiring the old setup. Install or stream the game, launch your save and verify the controller, display and online features you actually use.
Troubleshooting common surprises
The PS4 disc does not work on PS5
- Confirm that the PS5 has a disc drive; the Digital Edition cannot read the disc.
- Check that the disc is a PS4 game disc and is not an unsupported older-generation disc.
- Inspect the game’s current compatibility information and install any required system or game updates.
- Keep the disc inserted while launching the installed game; installation does not remove the ownership check.
The upgrade option is missing
- Verify that the specific edition is eligible; not every PS4 release has a PS5 upgrade.
- Check whether the offer is free, paid or time-limited.
- For a disc upgrade, confirm that you are using a PS5 with a drive and that disc and account regions align.
- If the PS4 copy came from a PlayStation Plus monthly benefit, do not assume it qualifies unless the listing expressly says so.
A classic game cannot be found in the catalog
- Check the catalog in your own country and account, because selections vary by market.
- Confirm that your PlayStation Plus plan includes Classics Catalog access.
- Search the exact title and edition; a series presence does not guarantee that every release is included.
- Look for a catalog removal, download restriction or streaming-only designation.
Streaming is blurry, delayed or unavailable
- Test the connection against Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum; target at least 15 Mbps for 1080p when supported.
- Reduce competing traffic and, where possible, use a stable wired or strong local connection.
- Remember that Remote Play, Share Play, broadcasting, PSVR and third-party controllers are listed as unsupported during streaming.
- If latency remains unacceptable, use a downloadable version when the title offers one.
The PS5 version cannot see your save
- Determine whether you launched the PS4 version or a separate PS5 version; they can use different save systems.
- Read the developer’s transfer instructions for that game and complete any in-game upload step.
- Do not delete the PS4 version or its local save until the transfer has been verified.
The practical verdict
For a mixed digital and physical PS4 collection, a disc-drive PS5 is the most flexible upgrade: it runs the majority of PS4 games, preserves access to compatible discs and may add title-specific performance or upgrade benefits. The PS5 Digital Edition is appropriate only when your library is entirely digital or subscription-based. For original PS1, PS2 and PS3 games, think in terms of the specific catalog listing or re-release rather than automatic disc compatibility. PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog access works on both consoles where offered, but membership, country, title availability and streaming requirements determine what you can actually play.
