Yes. PS4 can send audio over HDMI, and PlayStation documents surround output over DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL) on models that have that port. The connection, console revision, game or media, and receiving equipment all matter; PlayStation’s North American and European FAQs even give different optical channel counts, so there is no single channel maximum to promise for every setup.
How can a PS4 send surround sound?
The usual route is HDMI: connect the PS4’s HDMI OUT to a TV or home-theater receiver. PlayStation says the console sends both video and audio over HDMI and automatically optimizes the audio format for the connected device. If you connect through a TV, the TV must also support passing the relevant audio format to your sound system.
A second route is DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL), also called optical or TOSLINK. It sends audio directly from the console to a compatible receiver or sound system, but it is available only on PS4 revisions with the optical port. PlayStation’s setup instructions show that port on CUH-1000/1100, CUH-1200, and PS4 Pro CUH-7000/7100/7200 examples. Check the model label and rear panel rather than relying on the console’s appearance; PlayStation says CUH-2000 series systems lack an optical digital output terminal.
HDMI or optical: which connection should you use?

The cited PlayStation instructions establish the console’s output paths, but do not certify particular third-party TVs, receivers, or speakers. Confirm the capabilities of both ends of the connection before choosing an output format.

How do you configure PS4 audio output?
- Connect the PS4 to the TV or receiver using HDMI, or connect an optical cable if both devices have the required ports.
- On the PS4, open Settings > Sound and Screen > Audio Output Settings.
- For an optical connection, set Primary Output Port to DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL). For HDMI, use the appropriate HDMI output path for your connected equipment.
- Review Audio Format (Priority). PlayStation lists Linear PCM as the default. Choose a format only after checking that the receiving equipment supports it; PlayStation warns that unsupported output settings can damage speakers.
- Play content that supports the sound format you want and confirm that the TV or receiver is receiving it. The console’s connection alone does not establish that a particular game, film, or receiving device will produce discrete surround sound.

Does PS4 support 5.1 or 7.1 audio?
PlayStation’s official statements differ by region. Its North American FAQ, published October 30, 2013, says PS4 can output 5.1 via DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL). Its Europe FAQ, also published October 30, 2013, says the system can output 5.1 or 7.1 audio via DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL). Those are region-specific statements from PlayStation, not a guarantee that every PS4 model, title, audio format, or receiver configuration will provide those channels.

The cited FAQs do not explain why their channel-count descriptions differ or specify which content and receiver configurations account for the distinction. Treat channel support as dependent on the content and the capabilities of the full connection chain, and check the documentation for your receiving equipment. PlayStation’s North American PS4 FAQ and Europe PS4 FAQ contain the respective wording.
How can you tell whether your PS4 has optical audio?
Read the model number on the console label, then inspect the rear panel for a port marked DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL). PlayStation’s setup page illustrates optical ports on CUH-1000/1100, CUH-1200, and PS4 Pro CUH-7000/7100/7200 examples, and shows no optical port on CUH-2000/2100/2200 examples. Its support page explicitly states that CUH-2000 series consoles do not have an optical digital output terminal. Can PS4 send surround sound to headphones?
PS4 lets you choose whether headphone output carries all audio or chat audio. Open Settings > Devices > Audio Devices > Output to Headphones and select the option that matches your use. PlayStation says the default is Chat Audio. This routing setting does not establish that an arbitrary headset provides discrete surround; check the headset’s own supported features and connection requirements.

PlayStation notes that HDMI output may fail if a connected device is not HDCP-compatible. HDCP can be disabled for gameplay only; Blu-ray and DVD playback, as well as DRM-protected streaming, require HDCP to be enabled. Consult PlayStation’s audio-output support page for its current guidance, and check the receiving device’s compatibility if audio or video remains unavailable.
