Chiaki/chiaki-ng and PSPlay/PXPlay are alternatives to Sony’s official Android client, but they are still console Remote Play tools: the game runs on your own PS4 and is transmitted to the phone. Cloud streaming is a separate service in which Sony’s servers run an eligible game, with different subscription, catalog, regional and device rules. Choose the path that matches whether you own a PS4, which Android version and controller you have, and whether you need access away from your console.

Remote Play and cloud streaming are not the same thing

The phrase “stream PS4 games to Android” describes two fundamentally different arrangements. Confusing them is the fastest way to install the wrong app or expect a service to work without the hardware it actually requires.

Console Remote Play

With Sony’s official app, Chiaki/chiaki-ng or PSPlay/PXPlay, your PS4 is the host. The console runs the game, renders the picture and sends that output to the Android device. Your touches or controller inputs travel back to the PS4, which remains responsible for the game session. You therefore need access to a PS4 that has Remote Play enabled and a network path between the console and Android device.

Cloud streaming

Cloud streaming places the game on Sony’s servers instead. The Android device receives a video stream from the service and sends input to the server; your own PS4 is not the host. Availability depends on Sony’s current cloud catalog, PlayStation Plus Premium eligibility, country, account terms and supported devices. Sony specifically says that titles which must be streamed through a PlayStation Plus Premium membership are not compatible with PS4 Remote Play. A cloud-streaming app or service should therefore be evaluated separately from every Remote Play client.

At-a-glance comparison

Option Where the game runs What is established What you must verify before relying on it
Official PS Remote Play Your PS4 or PS5 Android 9 or later supports on-screen controls; DUALSHOCK 4 Bluetooth is listed for Android 10 or later; DualSense is listed for Android 12 or later. Sony documents the console-based Remote Play model. Current Play Store listing, exact handset compatibility, controller-driver support, network behavior and labels in the current app release.
Chiaki / chiaki-ng Your PS4 or PS5 chiaki-ng describes itself as a free, open-source Remote Play client with Android support. Its project documentation states that it is not endorsed or certified by Sony Interactive Entertainment. The current Android build and distribution channel, setup and account-pairing steps, controller mapping, connection behavior, update activity and any device-specific limitations.
PSPlay / PXPlay Your PS4 or PS5 It is a third-party Remote Play option named for Android users. Current product name, Android versions, price, controller features, remote-access behavior, distribution method, privacy terms and maintenance status. Current authoritative details are not established here.
Cloud streaming Sony’s cloud servers It is separate from console Remote Play. Games that must be streamed with PlayStation Plus Premium are excluded from Remote Play compatibility. Country, subscription tier, eligible game catalog, Android support, account requirements and current service terms.

No controlled performance test establishes that Chiaki, PSPlay or the official app is universally faster, easier, safer or more reliable. Latency depends on the console, handset, Wi-Fi or mobile connection, routing and game, so a forum bitrate or delay number is not a transferable benchmark.

Official PS Remote Play: the compatibility baseline

Android versions and controllers

Sony’s published compatibility guidance sets a useful baseline:

  • Android 9 or later: on-screen controls are supported.
  • Android 10 or later: Bluetooth connection to a DUALSHOCK 4 is listed as supported.
  • Android 12 or later: DualSense support is listed.

Those version numbers do not guarantee that every handset will work with every controller. Device manufacturers determine which Bluetooth and controller drivers they ship. Check the phone maker’s documentation and the current Sony app listing for the exact model, especially on modified Android builds, tablets and devices with unusual Bluetooth implementations.

What the official app actually does

The app is a remote screen and input client, not a second copy of your PS4 games. The PS4 executes the game while the Android screen mirrors the console’s output and sends controls back. Installing the app cannot substitute for a PS4 that is configured and reachable.

Games and media that may not work

Sony says almost all PS4 game titles are available through PS4 Remote Play, but “almost all” is not “every title.” A publisher can designate a game as non-compatible. Sony gives games that require hardware such as PlayStation Camera as an example. Disc and Blu-ray playback, along with video playback through streaming services, is also restricted. If a title depends on a camera, another physical accessory or a protected media mode, test that title’s compatibility rather than assuming the general rule applies.

Chiaki and chiaki-ng

What this option is

Chiaki is a community-developed Remote Play client; chiaki-ng is a continuation project whose documentation lists Android support. It connects to a PlayStation console rather than to a cloud-game catalog. The project explicitly says: “This project is not endorsed or certified by Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC.” Treat that statement as an important distinction from Sony’s official client.

The practical reason to consider it is choice: an open-source client may be useful when the official app is unavailable on a particular device or when you need a different client implementation. The available documentation does not establish a universal speed, latency, compatibility or reliability advantage, so those should be treated as device-and-network questions, not promises.

What to check before installing

  • Confirm that the Android build is current and comes from a distribution channel you trust. Project activity and Android packaging can change.
  • Read the project’s current setup instructions for console registration, sign-in or pairing. Do not infer that screens or fields from an older tutorial still exist.
  • Check how the build handles your intended controller, including DUALSHOCK 4, DualSense and on-screen input.
  • Review permissions, update history and the project’s source before entering account information.
  • Test first on the same network as the PS4, then separately test any away-from-home use. A local success does not prove that an external connection will work.

When Chiaki is a sensible choice

Use it when you specifically want a third-party, open-source Remote Play client and are comfortable verifying builds and troubleshooting community documentation. It is not a way to play a PS4 title without a PS4, and its disclaimer means it should not be presented as Sony-certified software.

PSPlay and PXPlay: verify the current product before committing

Why the name needs checking

PSPlay and PXPlay are names used for a third-party Android Remote Play option, but current authoritative product details are not established here. App names, package listings and distribution arrangements can change. Search results, old videos and forum posts may describe an earlier name or build.

Checklist for evaluating a current listing

  1. Confirm the exact publisher and package name in the current Android store or project listing.
  2. Record the supported Android versions and whether the listing names your handset or tablet.
  3. Check whether the app is paid, subscription-based or free; do not assume the model from an older review.
  4. Read the current controller, touch-control and remote-access descriptions.
  5. Review required permissions, privacy terms, update date and support contact.
  6. Look for a documented uninstall or account-revocation process before pairing it with your console account.

Until those points are verified for the release you plan to use, it is not accurate to call PSPlay/PXPlay faster, safer, easier or more capable than Chiaki or Sony’s app. The responsible comparison is one of documented compatibility and your own testing conditions.

Cloud streaming when you do not have a PS4

What cloud access can solve

Cloud streaming is the route to investigate if your question is “Can I play without owning or accessing a PS4?” The server, rather than a console in your home, runs an eligible game. You still need a supported device, a suitable connection, an account in a supported region and whatever subscription tier Sony currently requires.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What cannot be assumed

Do not assume that every PS4 game is in the cloud catalog, that every PlayStation Plus Premium title is available in your country, or that an Android app is supported merely because another PlayStation device offers cloud features. Catalogs, regions, tiers and device policies are service terms that can change. Check Sony’s current cloud-streaming documentation for your country and Android model before paying for a subscription.

How cloud and Remote Play interact

A game that must be streamed through PlayStation Plus Premium is not a Remote Play target according to Sony’s Remote Play guidance. You cannot use Chiaki, PSPlay/PXPlay or the official Remote Play app to turn that cloud-only entitlement into a console stream. Conversely, a game installed or running on your own PS4 may be suitable for Remote Play even when it is not part of the cloud catalog, subject to the game’s restrictions.

Set up the official console-to-Android path

These steps cover the documented PS4 setting and the compatibility decisions around it. App labels can change between releases, so follow the current on-screen prompts where they differ.

  1. Enable Remote Play on the PS4. On the console, open Settings > Remote Play Connection Settings > Enable Remote Play.
  2. Check the Android version. Android 9 or later is the baseline for on-screen controls. If you plan to use a DUALSHOCK 4 over Bluetooth, use Android 10 or later; for DualSense, use Android 12 or later.
  3. Confirm controller support. Pair the controller using the phone maker’s documented method and verify that the handset supports the required driver. If it does not, use on-screen controls or a controller known to be supported by that device.
  4. Install and open the current official app. Verify the current store listing and complete its sign-in and console-connection prompts. Do not rely on screenshots from an older Android release.
  5. Test a permitted game. Start with a title that does not require PlayStation Camera or restricted media playback. This separates a game restriction from a connection problem.
  6. Test the location you actually need. A same-network test checks basic setup. If you intend to play away from home, perform a separate test from that location and network; the documentation does not establish a universal latency or bandwidth guarantee.

Choosing by situation

Your situation Most defensible starting point Reason
You own a PS4 and want the least ambiguous compatibility path. Official PS Remote Play It is Sony’s documented baseline, with published Android and controller requirements.
The official client is unavailable or unsuitable and you can manage community software. Chiaki/chiaki-ng Its documentation lists Android support and identifies it as free and open source, while clearly disclaiming Sony endorsement.
You are considering PSPlay/PXPlay because of a specific feature. Verify the current listing first. Current feature, pricing, Android-version and remote-access details are not established here.
You do not own or cannot reach a PS4. Investigate cloud streaming. Cloud streaming uses Sony’s servers, but catalog, region, subscription and device eligibility must be checked.
Your game uses PlayStation Camera or protected media playback. Check the title’s restrictions before choosing an app. Those are documented Remote Play exceptions that an alternative client cannot automatically remove.

Troubleshoot by symptom

The phone says it is incompatible

Check the Android version against Sony’s baseline, then check the exact handset in the current app listing. Android 9 is enough for on-screen controls, but not the listed DUALSHOCK 4 or DualSense Bluetooth milestones. A manufacturer-specific controller driver can still be the limiting factor even when the Android version is high enough.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The controller pairs but does not control the game

Confirm that the phone supports the controller’s required Android version and driver. Try the official app’s on-screen controls to determine whether the Remote Play connection itself works. If touch input works but the physical controller does not, the problem is device/controller compatibility rather than the PS4 game stream.

The PS4 connects but one title will not start

Check whether the title requires PlayStation Camera or another unsupported accessory, or whether you are trying to play disc, Blu-ray or streaming-video content. Sony’s “almost all” wording allows these exceptions.

A third-party client behaves differently from the official app

Record the exact project or package version, Android build, controller and network location. Recheck the current project instructions and permissions, and reproduce the test with a permitted game. Do not treat one device’s result as proof that the client is globally better or worse.

You expected cloud access but the app asks for a console

You opened a Remote Play client. Chiaki, PSPlay/PXPlay and the official Remote Play app need a console host. For a no-PS4 scenario, verify Sony’s current cloud-streaming offering, subscription tier, region and Android support instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cost, account and maintenance considerations

Costs

The available compatibility material does not establish a current price for PSPlay/PXPlay or a universal cost comparison among clients. A DUALSHOCK 4 is an optional physical controller, but its usefulness depends on Android 10-or-later Bluetooth support and the handset’s driver. Check current store and hardware pricing for your region rather than relying on an old article.

Account and privacy

The official app and third-party clients may present different sign-in, pairing and permission screens. Use only current documentation and a distribution source you trust. Chiaki-ng’s lack of Sony endorsement is a fact about its status, not proof that it is unsafe; likewise, an official label does not remove the need to review permissions on your device.

Keeping the setup working

Android releases, Play Store availability, project builds, controller drivers, Sony service policies and cloud catalogs can all change. Recheck compatibility after a major Android update, a console-system update or a client update. Keep the exact app version and handset model in your troubleshooting notes so a later change can be identified.

Decision checklist

  • Do you own or control a PS4 that can host the game?
  • Is the PS4’s Remote Play setting enabled at Settings > Remote Play Connection Settings > Enable Remote Play?
  • Is the phone on Android 9 or later for touch controls?
  • If using DUALSHOCK 4, is it Android 10 or later with a supported driver?
  • If using DualSense, is it Android 12 or later with a supported driver?
  • Does the game avoid Camera-dependent functions and restricted disc, Blu-ray or streaming-video playback?
  • Are you evaluating a current, trusted build of Chiaki/chiaki-ng or PSPlay/PXPlay rather than an old tutorial?
  • If you do not have a PS4, have you checked Sony’s current cloud catalog, country, subscription tier and Android-device rules?

Sony’s compatibility and service policies, as well as Android app distribution and chiaki-ng activity, are volatile. The details above reflect documentation available on October 13, 2026; verify the current listing and service terms immediately before setup.
