There is no verified definitive list of three PlayStation 2 games that have aged poorly. The available evidence supports a more careful answer: Grand Theft Auto III has a specific, modestly noted visual limitation, while Tony Hawk’s Underground drew contemporary criticism for its driving goals, story, and PS2 performance. Both also had strengths that remain central to their appeal. “Aged poorly” depends on which part of a game you mean.
What does “aged poorly” mean for a PS2 game?
A game can feel dated in one respect without being broadly unsuccessful or unpleasant to play. Visual distance, control response, mission structure, pacing, and technical performance are separate questions. The evidence here is strongest for specific criticisms recorded in reviews around the games’ original releases, not for a current player consensus or a firsthand modern play test.
That distinction matters for these examples: contemporary popularity and acclaim describe their standing at release, while a review criticism identifies a particular limitation. Neither alone predicts how much a new player will enjoy them now.
Grand Theft Auto III: a visible limitation, not a verdict on the whole game
Grand Theft Auto III became one of the most popular games following its PlayStation 2 release, according to GameSpot’s review. That same review noted that object draw distance could have been adjustable, but characterized it as a minor visual distraction rather than an obstacle to gameplay. The grounded criticism, then, is about how far objects are visible—not evidence that the game’s overall play has aged badly.

The game’s influence and technical ambition were also recalled in a PlayStation.Blog twentieth-anniversary retrospective. Capcom director Koshi Nakanishi said, “I remember thinking ‘how did they make this kind of game on PS2?’” That recollection speaks to the impression the game made, not to the condition of every part of it by modern standards.
Tony Hawk’s Underground: uneven side systems around praised skating
GameSpot’s contemporaneous review of Tony Hawk’s Underground criticized its vehicle driving as poorly controlled and described the related goals as filler-like. It also found the story uninteresting. Those are specific weaknesses in portions of the game, rather than a dismissal of its central skating.

The same review praised the skating as entertaining and open-ended, and viewed getting off the board and using wall plants as additions that created interesting possibilities. Its assessment was mixed by component: the core activity received praise even as driving and story elements fell short.

What historical acclaim can—and cannot—tell you
Guinness World Records reported that Grand Theft Auto III and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 each had a 97% Metacritic rating, verified on January 24, 2022, in its record entry about highly rated PS2 games. This is evidence of historical critical acclaim, not a rating of present-day playability. It also refers to Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3, not Tony Hawk’s Underground.
A separate PlayStation.Blog poll of game developers and journalists recorded five mentions for Grand Theft Auto III among must-play PS2 games. The poll was based on named industry participants; it is not a sales figure or a representative survey of players. These records help explain why a game could remain notable even when particular elements feel dated.

Which one might feel more dated to you?
- If visual presentation is your main concern: the documented GTA III issue is object draw distance, which GameSpot called a minor distraction. The cited evidence does not establish a broader visual assessment.
- If you dislike uneven mission activities: Tony Hawk’s Underground has specific contemporary criticism of its driving controls and related goals, alongside praise for its skating.
- If technical consistency matters most: the original PS2 review of Tony Hawk’s Underground reported frame-rate drops and tearing in crowded environments. It does not establish how the game performs on every modern setup.
- If historical reputation matters: acclaim figures and retrospective polls show recognition, but they cannot settle whether the games’ controls, pacing, or presentation suit your tastes today.
What is not established
The available evidence does not verify a canonical set of three games behind the title, nor does it establish a general modern consensus that these games aged poorly. It supports discussing GTA III and Tony Hawk’s Underground as examples with identifiable, bounded criticisms. A third game should not be added as though it were part of a confirmed list without comparable evidence.
