ARMSX2 Refresh v2.3.5 fixes a reported crash when launching games with Vulkan on Mali GPUs, while an earlier Refresh update added options to render below a game’s original resolution. Those changes may help some older Pixel and MediaTek phones—but only models with Mali graphics are relevant, and neither change guarantees better performance in every game.
What the ARMSX2 Refresh updates change
Version 2.3.5: a Mali Vulkan launch-crash fix
Android Authority reported on June 23, 2026, that ARMSX2 Refresh v2.3.5, released the day before, fixed a crash affecting Mali GPUs when a game was launched with Vulkan enabled. The report quoted the ARMSX2 changelog: “This should improve performance for Mali users!” That is the developers’ stated expectation, not a published benchmark or a measured speed increase. If Vulkan crashes as a game starts on a Mali phone, this update addresses a known cause worth checking. It does not establish that all Vulkan launch crashes have the same cause; other device, game, or configuration issues may remain.
Version 2.3.2: lower internal-resolution options
ARMSX2 Refresh v2.3.2 added internal rendering choices of 0.25x, 0.5x, and 0.75x. Rendering below the game’s original resolution can reduce the graphics workload on a budget phone, but the image will have less detail. Which older Pixels and MediaTek phones are relevant?
The key is the graphics processor, not the phone brand or processor name by itself. Many MediaTek Helio and Dimensity chips use Mali graphics, and Pixels with Tensor chipsets before Tensor G5 were reported to use Mali. That makes some older Pixels and many MediaTek models potential beneficiaries of the crash fix; it does not mean every phone in either category qualifies. Check your exact phone’s specifications to confirm its GPU before assuming the Mali-specific fix applies. Even on a Mali device, the outcome depends on the game and configuration.

How ARMSX2 Refresh fits with other emulator builds
ARMSX2 Refresh’s 2.3.x fixes and settings are distinct from the main ARMSX2 release history. Android Authority reported in May 2026 that ARMSX2 1.0.8 improved Mali support in the main build, including graphics fixes, OpenGL behavior, and compatibility. That release also included HostFS, improved VU1 emulation, disc swapping, an FPS limit, and additional internal-resolution choices. There is also a distinction in how builds run on Android. Android Authority described an earlier ARMSX2 build as using x86-to-Arm translation, which could make it less performant than Arm-native options such as NetherSX2. The report described Refresh as a native release. That context can inform which build you try, but it is not a guarantee that one emulator will run every game better on your phone. NetherSX2 variant guidance for Mali and less powerful devices
The NetherSX2 community repository recommends Classic 3668 for Mali GPUs or less powerful devices, and Patched 4248 for more powerful devices or Adreno GPUs. This is repository guidance, not a promise of compatibility or performance across all games. NetherSX2 community repository
What to try if a PS2 game still crashes or runs slowly
- Confirm the GPU. Check the exact phone model’s specifications; the Vulkan crash fix described here is specifically for Mali GPUs.
- Check the installed ARMSX2 Refresh version. The June 23, 2026 report said the Refresh changes appeared first on GitHub and were subsequently reflected in the Play Store version. App distribution can change, so check the current listing and version rather than assuming an update is available in a particular channel.
- If the game crashes at launch with Vulkan on Mali, try the updated Refresh build. The fix targets a reported Mali Vulkan launch crash, not every possible crash.
- If performance is the problem, try one of the 0.75x, 0.5x, or 0.25x internal-resolution choices, if available in your build. Lower settings reduce image detail, so compare the visual result with how smoothly the game runs.
- Compare builds only when needed. Results depend on the phone, game, graphics backend, and emulator variant; a community recommendation is a useful starting point, not a universal ranking.
What you need to play
Emulation requires game files made from discs you own or otherwise have the right to use; AetherSX2’s project overview describes playing games dumped from disc on phones. A physical Android-compatible controller is optional if you prefer it to touchscreen controls, but compatibility depends on the controller and device. AetherSX2 project overview
