Short answer: Sony’s official PS5 support information reviewed for this guide covers PS4 games and does not list original PS2 discs as playable. For using your own PS2 discs on a modern computer, PCSX2 is the documented route: it can start a disc directly, but the project recommends dumping the disc to an ISO for more reliable performance. PCSX2 also requires a BIOS dump from a PS2 console you legitimately own, a compatible 64-bit computer, and game-specific compatibility checks.

That makes the two options fundamentally different. A PS5 is the simpler device when the game belongs to the supported PS4 ecosystem; it is not documented here as a PS2-disc player. PCSX2 takes more preparation, but it is designed specifically to emulate PlayStation 2 software and can work with physical discs or disc images.

PS5 or PC: which route is right for a PS2 game?

Question PS5 PCSX2 on PC
Official support documentation PlayStation’s current ecosystem information describes PS4 games on PS5. Original PS2 discs are not listed as playable. PCSX2 is a free, open-source PlayStation 2 emulator for Windows, Linux and macOS.
Use of an existing PS2 disc No PS2-disc playback mode is documented in the official information reviewed. Use System > Start Disc, or dump the disc to an ISO.
Setup effort Normally limited to inserting a supported game and installing any required update. Install the emulator, dump a BIOS from your own PS2, complete the first-run wizard and configure game media.
Computer requirements None beyond the console itself. A supported 64-bit operating system, compatible CPU and graphics APIs, and at least 8 GB of RAM in the project’s minimum tier.
Compatibility Depends on whether the title is in the supported PS4-on-PS5 catalog, not on PS2-disc compatibility. Varies by game, PC hardware and emulator version. Check the current PCSX2 compatibility list for the exact title.
Optical drive Not relevant to PS2 discs. Needed only if your computer must read or dump physical discs. A standard DVD/CD drive is suitable.

If your goal is specifically to insert an original PS2 disc and play it, PCSX2 is the option documented for that task. If you only own a PS5, the official support pages cited here do not provide a PS2-disc workflow.

What Sony’s official PS5 information actually covers

The documented backward-compatibility scope is PS4

PlayStation’s PS4 and PS5 ecosystem page explains how PS4 titles work on PS5 and discusses PS4 game upgrades. It does not present original PlayStation 2 discs as a supported format. A PlayStation Blog article dated March 18, 2020 described the PS5 launch-era plan in terms of the PS4 catalog, saying that the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 titles were expected to be playable. That figure is a PS4 catalog statistic, not a PS2 compatibility count; the article is historical rather than a complete list of every feature available today.

What the documentation gap means

The careful consumer conclusion is: Sony’s PS5 backward-compatibility information reviewed here covers PS4 games and does not list original PS2 discs as playable. That wording reflects what the official pages document. It does not claim that every unofficial hardware or software configuration is technically impossible, nor does it promise that a particular PS2 title will run through an unlisted method.

Can I play PS2 discs on PS5?

There is no ordinary, officially documented PS2-disc playback procedure in the PlayStation materials cited above. You should not expect the PS5’s PS4-disc support to make an original PS2 DVD or CD work automatically. Inserting a PS2 disc is therefore not an equivalent alternative to using PCSX2.

For a PS5 owner, first identify what edition of the game you have and what platform version it is. A PS4 release may be supported on PS5 according to PlayStation’s current compatibility information, but that is a different product from the original PS2 disc. Do not treat a PS4 remaster, digital release or upgrade as evidence that the PS2 disc itself is supported.

What PCSX2 is and what you need before installing it

PCSX2’s FAQ identifies the project as a free, open-source PS2 emulator. It supports Windows, Linux and macOS, but the exact operating-system build and graphics support requirements can change, so consult the project’s current documentation before installing.

Minimum computer considerations

The FAQ’s minimum tier calls for all of the following:

  • A supported 64-bit operating system.
  • A processor with SSE4.1 support.
  • At least two physical CPU cores with simultaneous multithreading.
  • A graphics processor supporting the APIs listed by the current PCSX2 documentation.
  • 8 GB of RAM.

PCSX2 also publishes a higher recommended tier. The project does not treat a threshold as a guarantee that every game will run at full speed: game complexity, renderer, resolution settings, drivers and the rest of the computer all affect the result. Use the current FAQ rather than an old hardware list when evaluating a new machine.

You must provide your own BIOS

PCSX2 requires a BIOS dump made from a PlayStation 2 console that you legitimately own. The project states: “First, you must dump your PlayStation 2 console’s BIOS using the BIOS dumper.” You then copy that dump to the computer and complete the emulator’s first-time setup wizard. PCSX2 documentation does not authorize downloading a BIOS from an unrelated website, and this guide does not provide or imply a BIOS download source.

How to use a physical PS2 disc in PCSX2

PCSX2 can launch a game directly from an optical drive. This is useful for a quick test or for a computer that already has a suitable drive, but the project warns that some games can have speed problems when read directly from a PC drive.

  1. Confirm the drive format. PS2 software is distributed on DVDs or CDs. The PCSX2 disc guide says a standard optical drive that supports both DVD and CD media can read or dump them. A built-in drive may be enough; a separate drive is needed only when the computer has no compatible optical hardware.
  2. Install PCSX2 for your operating system. Obtain the current build from the project’s official distribution channels and launch it once so the first-run setup wizard appears.
  3. Dump the BIOS from your own PS2. Follow the BIOS-dumping instructions referenced by the project, copy the resulting files to the location requested by the wizard and let PCSX2 verify them.
  4. Insert the game disc. Wait for the operating system to detect the DVD or CD. If the drive cannot read the medium, check the disc for damage and confirm that the drive supports the disc type before troubleshooting PCSX2.
  5. Start the disc. In PCSX2, choose System > Start Disc and select the optical drive when prompted. The emulator will boot the disc through the configured PS2 environment.
  6. Observe performance. If the game runs unusually slowly, pauses while data loads or otherwise behaves inconsistently, stop using direct-disc mode and create an ISO dump instead. PCSX2 specifically recommends the ISO approach because a PC drive may not keep spinning in the same way a PS2 drive does.

PCSX2’s FAQ states: “It is recommended to instead dump your games to ISO images.”

Why dumping the disc to an ISO is usually better

An ISO is a file containing a sector-by-sector image of the game disc. PCSX2 can read that image from storage instead of waiting for an optical drive to seek and spin. This removes a mechanical bottleneck and gives you a repeatable file for future sessions, while still requiring that you own and dump the original game media.

ISO workflow

  1. Use a DVD/CD-capable optical drive. The PCSX2 disc-dumping guide covers PS2 DVDs and CDs and explains the drive category required. If your desktop or laptop lacks an internal drive, an external USB DVD/CD drive can be used when it is supported by your operating system.
  2. Use a disc-imaging tool described by the guide. Follow the current instructions for your operating system and select the physical PS2 disc as the source. Do not simply copy visible files from the disc; an emulator needs a proper image.
  3. Let the dump finish without interruption. Keep the drive connected, avoid ejecting the disc and save the ISO to a storage location with enough free space for the image.
  4. Validate the result if the tool provides a check. The guide warns that a bad dump can produce symptoms such as freezing at loading screens. If the game freezes or fails to boot, repeat the dump and inspect the original disc for scratches or contamination.
  5. Open the ISO in PCSX2. Use the emulator’s disc-image selection control, then launch the image rather than choosing System > Start Disc. The exact label can differ between releases, so follow the current interface shown in PCSX2’s documentation.

Readers without an optical drive do not need to buy one for every PCSX2 session. They need one only to read or create an image from a physical disc. A computer that already has a functioning DVD/CD drive can perform that part without additional hardware.

PCSX2 compatibility: why one game can work while another does not

Emulation results are title-specific. Two games that use the same disc format can stress the emulator differently, and a faster computer does not automatically correct an emulator-level compatibility issue. The PCSX2 project’s README links to its maintained compatibility list and reports more than 2,500 titles tested; the opened README does not state a publication year for that number.

Before spending time tuning settings, open the current compatibility list from the PCSX2 README and search for the exact game, region and release where those details are shown. Treat a listing as a starting point rather than a promise: emulator versions, operating systems, drivers and configuration can change the result. Do not assume a title is guaranteed to work merely because another game from the same series does.

PS5 versus PCSX2 by practical decision

Choose the PS5 path when

  • You are playing a PS4 version that PlayStation identifies as compatible with PS5.
  • You value console simplicity and do not want to configure an emulator or dump a BIOS.
  • You do not specifically need the original PS2 disc to be the source of the game.

Choose PCSX2 when

  • You want to use an original PS2 DVD or CD from your collection.
  • You have access to a legitimately owned PS2 console for the BIOS dump.
  • Your computer meets the current PCSX2 requirements and you are willing to check compatibility for each title.
  • You want the option of direct-disc testing followed by ISO-based play if the optical drive causes speed problems.

Choose neither route without checking the edition

A PS2 disc, a PS4 release and a digital re-release are separate software products. Confirm which one you own before selecting hardware. Buying a PS5 will not convert an original PS2 disc into a documented PS5-compatible release, while installing PCSX2 does not remove the need for a BIOS dump, a readable disc or a valid ISO.

Troubleshooting common problems

The PS5 does not recognize the PS2 disc

Do not keep repeating disc-cleaning or system-reset steps as though the PS5 were documented to support PS2 media. The official support pages cited here do not list original PS2 discs as playable. Check whether you actually have a PS4 version or another officially supported release; otherwise, use a documented PS2-capable platform such as PCSX2 with the required setup.

PCSX2 reports that no BIOS is available

Return to the BIOS-dumping step. PCSX2 expects a dump from your own PS2, copied to the folder selected in the setup wizard. A game ISO cannot substitute for the BIOS, and downloading an unidentified BIOS file introduces both legal and technical problems.

The direct disc mode is slow

This is the specific failure mode PCSX2 warns about: some games can have speed problems because a PC drive does not keep spinning like a PS2. Dump the disc to an ISO and launch the image instead. If the ISO also runs slowly, compare your computer with the current recommended requirements and inspect the game’s compatibility entry before changing advanced settings.

The game freezes at a loading screen

PCSX2’s disc guide identifies a bad dump as one possible cause. Re-create the ISO with the documented tool, verify that the drive can read the entire disc and test the original medium for physical damage. If the new dump still freezes, check the exact title in the current compatibility list rather than assuming the computer is at fault.

The emulator opens but the game does not boot

Check the BIOS selection, confirm that the image belongs to a PS2 game and verify that the title is listed in PCSX2’s compatibility information. Keep the emulator and graphics drivers current. Avoid promising a fix based only on a hardware upgrade; a game-specific issue may remain.

Ownership, dumping and responsible use

PCSX2’s documented workflow is built around media and firmware from hardware you legitimately own. You can use discs from your collection, and the project’s documentation also discusses obtaining games through legitimate resale channels. The important distinction is that the emulator does not supply the game or BIOS for you: you create the BIOS dump and disc image yourself.

Keep your original discs after dumping them. They are useful for re-reading a damaged or incomplete image, checking that you selected the correct regional release and demonstrating the source of the software you are emulating. Store ISO files securely because they can be large, and make a backup if the image represents a hard-to-replace disc.

Bottom line for PS2 disc owners

If your question is “Can I put a PS2 disc in a PS5?”, the official PlayStation information reviewed here does not document that feature. If your question is “Can PCSX2 play my PS2 disc?”, the answer is yes in the project’s documented workflow: use System > Start Disc for direct playback, but prefer an ISO when the drive causes speed problems. Plan for the BIOS dump, a compatible 64-bit computer, a DVD/CD drive for reading physical media and a compatibility check for the exact game.
