Short answer: PS2 disc support depends on the exact PS3 model; a PS5 cannot read PS3 discs; and computer emulation or PlayStation Plus Premium streaming are separate alternatives. The right choice depends on the specific game, disc region, hardware revision, computer, subscription catalog and internet connection.
Choose the game and edition before choosing hardware
Compatibility is not determined by the words “PS2 game” or “PS3 game” alone. Start with the exact title, disc edition and region. A PS3 model that handles most PS2-format discs can still reject a particular game or run it differently from an original PS2. A computer emulator may work well with one title and require different settings, or fail to reach full speed, with another. A streamed game must be present in the current catalog for your country and subscription tier.
- Identify the generation: PS2 software and PS3 software use different emulation projects and different console compatibility rules.
- Check the physical format: a PS2 DVD, a PS3 Blu-ray disc and a digital catalog license are not interchangeable access methods.
- Confirm the region: Sony’s backward-compatibility tables and PlayStation Plus catalogs can vary by sales region.
- Check the current status: emulator compatibility lists and cloud catalogs change, while used-console listings can contain incorrect model information.
How the main routes compare
| Route | What it does | Checks and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Original PS2 | Runs PS2 games on the hardware for which they were designed. | Verify the console, disc region, physical condition and required display connections. Individual used listings and games have no test result provided. |
| Selected PS3 models | Runs most PS2-format discs on specific early PS3 families. | Match the complete CECH model code and regional version to Sony’s table. Some discs may not work, and behavior can differ from an original PS2. |
| PCSX2 on a computer | Emulates PS2 software. | Performance depends on the game, computer and configuration. Consult the current project documentation and title-specific guidance. |
| RPCS3 on a computer | Emulates PS3 software where the project’s current compatibility and system requirements allow. | Use the live compatibility entry for the exact game. A project-wide status does not guarantee that your title or computer will work. |
| PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming | Streams eligible catalog games, including a wide selection of PS3 Classics. | Confirm the country, tier, title and current catalog. Sony’s US page states a 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps for 1080p; DLC and add-ons are not supported while streaming. |
Playing PS2 discs on a PS3
Why “a PS3” is not a sufficient specification
Sony produced multiple PS3 revisions with different backward-compatibility capabilities. Its regional disc guide lists early model families such as CECHA and CECHB, plus certain CECHC or CECHE versions depending on the market, among systems that can play most PS2-format discs. The list is model- and region-specific rather than a blanket feature of every PS3.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Find the complete CECH code printed on the console label, then compare that code with Sony’s official PS3 disc-compatibility table for your sales region. Do not rely on the storage capacity, exterior color or a seller’s phrase such as “backward compatible.” A listing that identifies only “60 GB PS3” does not establish compatibility because several revisions and regional variants used similar descriptions.

What “most” means in practice
Sony cautions that some PS2-format discs may not work and that compatible games can perform differently from the original console. Differences can include display behavior, timing, saved-game handling or other software quirks. Treat the table as a model-level eligibility guide, not a promise that every title will launch perfectly.
The PS3 game-settings documentation also warns that original PlayStation and PS2 software may not perform properly on PS3. Upscaling options can change the displayed resolution, but an upscaled signal is not the same thing as a remaster and does not prove universal game compatibility.

Verification procedure for a PS3 purchase or an existing console
- Read the model code: use the full CECH identifier from the console itself, not an abbreviated marketplace description.
- Match the region: open Sony’s regional backward-compatibility guide and locate that exact model family.
- Check the game: look for title-specific notes or exceptions in Sony’s documentation and in current owner documentation for the same disc edition.
- Inspect condition: used consoles can have worn optical drives, overheating damage or missing cables even when the model is theoretically compatible.
- Test conservatively: insert the disc, allow the system to recognize it and test an actual save or gameplay session before treating the setup as reliable.
Can a PS5 play PS3 discs?
PS5 consoles do not support PS3 discs. The disc cannot be used as a direct upgrade path, even if the same game appears in a newer digital or streaming catalog. Sony’s 2020 PS5 FAQ said the system would play PS5 games and more than 99% of PS4 games, including PlayStation VR games; that dated statement should not be read as a PS3-disc exception. Current support information separately identifies PS3 discs as unsupported.
If you own a PS3 disc, the practical choices are a compatible PS3, an original PS3 console, a computer emulator where the title is supported, or a separately available catalog version streamed through an eligible service. Buying a PS5 alone does not provide access to the data on your PS3 disc.
Emulating PS2 games with PCSX2
What PCSX2 is designed to do
PCSX2 is a computer emulator whose stated goal is to reproduce PlayStation 2 hardware so PS2 games can run on a PC. The project notes that accurately emulating the complex PS2 at full speed can require substantial computer capability. Performance is therefore a combination of processor and graphics hardware, operating-system configuration, emulator version and the individual game.
A cautious setup workflow
- Use the current PCSX2 documentation: download the version and dependencies recommended by the project rather than relying on an old tutorial.
- Prepare your legally obtained game material and system files: follow the project’s current instructions for the format and firmware data it accepts.
- Check the title before tuning: search current compatibility notes for the exact game and region; community reports can identify known graphical or audio issues.
- Start at default settings: establish whether the game boots and reaches normal gameplay before changing resolution, speed hacks or rendering options.
- Change one setting at a time: record the original value so you can undo a change that introduces crashes, missing effects or timing problems.
- Use a suitable controller: a generic USB gamepad can be useful, but verify that your operating system and the current PCSX2 build recognize it.
No particular computer, operating system or game configuration has a reported test result. Do not treat a project requirement or another player’s frame rate as a guarantee for your machine. A title-specific compatibility report is more useful than an aggregate claim that “PS2 emulation works.”

Emulating PS3 games with RPCS3
Why the compatibility list matters
RPCS3 maintains a living compatibility list for individual PS3 games. Entries and project requirements change as the emulator, drivers and game fixes evolve. A status snapshot from July 2026 is already less useful than the current entry when you are ready to play, and aggregate counts do not answer whether your exact title is playable.
How to evaluate a title
- Search the current RPCS3 game list: use the exact title, region and release identifier where listed.
- Read the status and notes: distinguish a game that reaches the menu from one that is playable through a complete session.
- Compare your computer with current requirements: processor, graphics driver, memory and operating-system support all affect results.
- Follow the project’s present setup guidance: emulator builds, firmware procedures and recommended settings can change.
- Keep expectations title-specific: a successful report for one PS3 game does not establish compatibility for another, even when both use the same engine.
RPCS3 is therefore a route for readers willing to check and configure a computer, not a universal PS3 replacement. If the title has no current playable entry or your hardware falls below the project’s guidance, a native console or supported streaming catalog may be more predictable.

Streaming PS2 and PS3 games with PlayStation Plus Premium
What the service provides
The US PlayStation Plus page lists Cloud Streaming and a Classics Catalog as Premium benefits. Sony says the catalog includes a wide selection of PS3 Classics available via streaming only. Streaming means the game runs on Sony’s servers and video is sent to your device; it does not make a PS3 disc readable by a PS5 or convert your personal disc library into a cloud license.
Confirm eligibility before subscribing
- Search the current Cloud Streaming Game Finder: verify the exact title rather than assuming that every game in a series is included.
- Check your country and plan: catalog contents and streaming availability vary by region and subscription tier.
- Review the removal notice: Sony states that catalog availability changes over time, some titles can be removed and not every game can be streamed.
- Check add-on needs: DLC and other add-ons are not supported when streaming a title, so a streamed base game may not reproduce a disc owner’s complete edition.
- Measure the connection you will use: Sony’s US service page states at least 5 Mbps, or 15 Mbps for 1080p. These are published service minimums, not a guarantee of identical latency or image quality in every household.
A wired connection or strong local network can reduce household congestion, but the decisive checks remain catalog eligibility, region, subscription and connection stability. Streaming access can disappear when a license or catalog listing changes.
Streaming is different from Remote Play
Cloud streaming from PlayStation Plus uses Sony’s servers and an eligible catalog license. Remote Play instead sends video from a console you own to another device. PlayStation Plus documentation establishes the cloud-streaming route; it does not establish universal remote access to PS2 or PS3 discs. Do not assume that installing a Remote Play app creates PS3-disc compatibility on a PS5 or PC.
Decision guide: which route fits your situation?
| Your starting point | Most defensible route | Why and what to verify |
|---|---|---|
| You own a PS2 disc and want the least software setup. | Original PS2. | Confirm disc region, console condition and display connections. |
| You own a PS2 disc and already have a PS3. | Use the PS3 only if its complete model and region appear in Sony’s compatible list. | Expect exceptions and possible differences from original PS2 behavior. |
| You own a PS3 disc and are considering a PS5. | Keep or obtain compatible PS3 hardware; otherwise investigate emulation or a separately cataloged streamed version. | PS5 does not read the disc directly. |
| You have a capable computer and want PS2 software. | Evaluate PCSX2 title by title. | Follow current documentation and expect configuration-dependent performance. |
| You have a capable computer and want PS3 software. | Evaluate RPCS3 title by title. | Read the live compatibility entry and current requirements before installing. |
| You want convenience and do not need to use your own disc. | PlayStation Plus Premium streaming, if the game is listed. | Verify region, tier, catalog status, bandwidth and the absence of required DLC. |
Troubleshooting common failures
The PS3 does not recognize a PS2 disc
- Recheck the complete CECH code and regional table; “PS3” by itself proves nothing.
- Try another known-good disc to separate a title exception from an optical-drive problem.
- Review Sony’s warning that some games may not work or may behave differently even on listed systems.
PCSX2 launches but the game stutters or shows defects
- Confirm that the computer and operating system meet current project guidance.
- Return altered speed, graphics or compatibility settings to defaults, then change one option at a time.
- Use the exact game and region in current compatibility notes; do not infer behavior from another title.
RPCS3 reports an error or poor performance
- Read the current game entry and issue notes rather than relying on an old video or status screenshot.
- Update drivers and follow the project’s current requirements before experimenting with per-game settings.
- Distinguish “boots” or “reaches menu” from a status indicating sustained playable performance.
A streamed title is missing
- Check the Cloud Streaming Game Finder for your country and Premium tier.
- Confirm that the title has not rotated out of the catalog.
- Remember that DLC and add-ons are unsupported during streaming, even when the base game is available.
Bottom line
For PS2 discs, an original PS2 is the predictable native choice, while only certain PS3 revisions provide partial backward compatibility. For PS3 discs, a PS5 is not a direct option. PCSX2 and RPCS3 can move the library to a computer, but both require title-specific checks and configuration. PlayStation Plus Premium can be the simplest route when the exact game is currently streamable in your region, with catalog changes and connection requirements accepted as part of the trade-off.
