A padlock on an installed PS Plus game usually means your PlayStation cannot validate the account license. It is not automatically a failed download. Check the account that redeemed or bought the game, confirm your PS Plus membership and the title’s current availability, then restore licenses. If another account owns the entitlement, correct console-sharing settings before redownloading or contacting Support.
What the padlock means
PlayStation separates the game files from the right to launch them. Downloading installs data on the drive; an entitlement in your PlayStation Network account authorizes use. A padlock appears when the console cannot match those files to a currently valid entitlement.
Common causes include signing in to a different account, an expired PS Plus membership, a title leaving the Game Catalog, a disabled sharing setting, a temporary PlayStation service problem, or corrupted local license information. The icon alone does not tell you which cause applies, so work through the checks in order.

Check the purchasing or redeeming account
On the console, switch to the account that originally purchased the game or redeemed it through PS Plus. If you downloaded while signed in to another family member’s account, that other account—not the account currently viewing the game—must hold the entitlement.

Sign in to the suspected owner account and review its transaction history. A purchase or redemption entry confirms that the account claimed the title. If no transaction or PS Plus claim exists, the installed copy may have been downloaded by a different account, from a disc that is no longer present, or from a promotion that has ended.
Distinguish a purchase from a PS Plus benefit
- A game bought from PlayStation Store remains tied to the purchasing account, subject to the normal account and console rules.
- A monthly game is available to download and play at no extra cost only while the account has an active PS Plus membership and the title was claimed during the eligible period.
- A Game Catalog or Classics Catalog title is available only while the account has the required PS Plus tier and the title remains in that catalog.
If you are unsure which route supplied the game, check both the transaction history and the current PS Plus game listings while signed in to the account that downloaded it.
2. Confirm PS Plus membership and catalog status
Check whether the membership is active
Open the PlayStation Plus area for the owning account and verify the subscription’s status and next renewal or expiration date. Once a PS Plus subscription ends, PlayStation says access to PS Plus benefits—including monthly games, online storage and online multiplayer—is lost. A monthly game can therefore remain installed yet show a padlock immediately after membership expiration.

The entitlement is not transferred to a different account on the console.
Check whether a catalog game left the service
Extra includes the Game Catalog, while Premium includes the Game Catalog and Classics Catalog. Catalog games are not permanent purchases. PlayStation publishes end dates for titles scheduled to leave, and a game can become locked even though the PS Plus membership is still active. Look at the current catalog listing for the exact title and edition, including any announced removal date.

A monthly game and a catalog game therefore fail differently: an expired subscription affects the monthly-game benefit, while a catalog removal affects that specific title despite an active subscription. Do not buy the game again or delete it until you have checked both conditions.
3. Restore licenses
Restoring licenses makes the console recheck digital entitlements with PlayStation. PlayStation specifically recommends it when a game has a padlock icon. The process does not delete installed games or saved data.
PS5
- Sign in to the account that purchased or redeemed the game.
- Open Settings.
- Select Users and Accounts.
- Choose Other.
- Select Restore Licenses, then confirm.
- Wait for the confirmation message, return to the game library and try the title again.
PS4
- Sign in to the owning account.
- Open Settings.
- Select Account Management.
- Choose Restore Licenses.
- Confirm the operation and test the game after it completes.
Restore licenses while the console is connected to the internet. If the game still shows a lock, do not repeatedly run the same command; continue with account sharing, service and software checks below.
4. Fix account sharing and console activation
PS5: Console Sharing and Offline Play
On PS5, the account that owns the game or PS Plus benefit can enable Console Sharing and Offline Play on one PS5. Other users on that console can then use selected games and benefits owned by the enabling account. Sign in as the owner and open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play. Enable it if the current PS5 is the console intended to share the entitlement.
If the owner enabled sharing on another PS5, the current console may not be authorized. Disable sharing on the old console when possible, then enable it on the console where the game is installed. Account-security limits still apply; sharing is not a way to move a purchase permanently to another account.

PS4: Activate as the primary PS4
On PS4, the owner account must activate the console as its primary PS4 for other local users to use selected purchases and PS Plus benefits. Sign in as the owner and go to Settings > Account Management > Activate as Your Primary PS4. Follow the on-screen status and test the game from the intended user profile.
PlayStation’s sharing rules allow selected PS Plus benefits on one primary PS4 and one PS5 with the relevant settings enabled. If activation is already assigned elsewhere, deactivate the previous console through the account controls or use PlayStation Support if you cannot access it.
When sharing is not the explanation
If the same owner account sees a lock while using the console directly, sharing settings are unlikely to be the root cause. Return to the owner account, restore licenses, and verify the membership or catalog listing. A shared user cannot repair an entitlement that the owning account no longer has.
5. Compare the PS5 and PS4 checks

6. Rule out a temporary service or software problem
Check PlayStation service status
License validation depends on PlayStation account services. Check the official PlayStation service-status page for account, gaming and store outages. During an outage, a valid game can appear locked until services recover. Wait for the incident to clear before changing account settings or deleting the installation.
Install the latest system software
On PS5, open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. On PS4, open Settings > System Software Update. Install any available update, restart the console and run Restore Licenses again.

Perform a complete restart
Close the game, choose Power > Restart, and wait for the console to return to the home screen. A restart clears a stalled session without removing data. Avoid unplugging the console while the power indicator is lit or blinking.
7. Redownload only after entitlement checks
If the account, subscription, catalog listing and sharing settings are correct, the local installation may be damaged. Before deleting, confirm that saved data is synchronized or backed up; deleting a game normally removes its application files, not separate saved-data files, but a backup protects against mistakes.
- Highlight the locked game on the home screen or in Game Library.
- Press the Options button and choose Delete. On PS5, you can also use Settings > Storage to remove the application.
- Restart the console.
- Open Game Library > Your Collection or the PlayStation Plus catalog while signed in to the owning account.
- Download the exact edition again and wait for installation to finish before launching.
If the title has left the catalog or the membership has expired, redownloading will not remove the padlock. Resolve the entitlement first.

Safe Mode provides maintenance tools that are unavailable during normal startup. Use the database-rebuild option only when ordinary restart, updates and a fresh download have failed.

- Turn the console completely off, not into Rest Mode.
- Press and hold the power button until you hear the second beep, then connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button.
- Choose the option to clear cache or rebuild the database when presented. Menu labels vary by console system software.
- Allow the process to finish without turning off the console, then restart and restore licenses once more.
Do not choose a reset or initialization option unless you have a verified backup and intend to erase the console. A database rebuild is a maintenance operation; a reset removes user data.

9. When to contact PlayStation Support
Contact Support after you have confirmed the owning account, checked the membership or catalog status, restored licenses, corrected sharing, updated the console and tested a fresh installation. Support can distinguish an account entitlement problem from a console or service fault.
Prepare the following details so the case can be diagnosed without repeating every step:
- Your console model (PS5 or PS4), system-software version and region.
- The exact game title, edition and whether it was purchased, claimed as a monthly game or downloaded from a catalog.
- The account identifier for the owner, without sharing your password or security codes.
- The padlock behavior and any displayed error code or message.
- The precise steps that reproduce the problem, including the date and time with your time zone.
- A screenshot or short video showing the lock and message, if Support’s upload process allows it.
- The results of restore licenses, service-status checks, sharing changes, restart and redownload.
Never give a purported helper your password, two-factor authentication code or full payment details. Use the contact route shown on the official PlayStation Support site.
Decision checklist
- Only one user sees the lock: sign in to the owning account and verify PS5 Console Sharing and Offline Play or primary-PS4 activation.
- Every user sees the lock after membership expiry: renew the eligible PS Plus account, then restore licenses.
- The game is listed as leaving the catalog: it is no longer covered by the catalog benefit after the published end date; a purchase is required to keep playing.
- The title is absent from the owner’s transaction history and catalog: identify the account or promotion that supplied it before deleting anything.
- Several digital games lock at once: check PlayStation service status, internet connectivity and account sign-in before troubleshooting one installation.
- Only this installation fails after all entitlement checks pass: update, restart, redownload and then rebuild the database in Safe Mode.
How to prevent another padlock
- Keep the purchasing or redeeming account accessible and record which account claimed each monthly game.
- Review PS Plus renewal and catalog-removal notices before a trip or offline play session.
- Leave Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled on the intended PS5, or keep the intended primary-PS4 activation current.
- Connect periodically so the console can validate licenses, especially after changing the account password, console or network.
- Maintain current system software and a recent saved-data backup before deleting and reinstalling a large game.
The reliable order is entitlement first, license refresh second, sharing and service checks next, and local repair last. That sequence avoids mistaking an expired benefit or catalog removal for a download failure.
