PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog games are subscription benefits, not permanent purchases. On PS5 or PS4, open the PlayStation Plus area, choose Classics Catalog, select an eligible title and choose Download or start streaming it. A download installs files on your console, but access still depends on an active qualifying membership and the game remaining in the catalog.
The most important save-data distinction is between the two methods: streamed games store saves on PlayStation, while downloaded games store saves on your console. Progress does not move between those versions automatically; PlayStation Plus cloud storage is the documented transfer route.
Quick answers
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Which plan includes the Classics Catalog? | PlayStation Plus Premium. |
| What is the minimum speed for streaming? | 5 Mbps broadband; 1080p streaming needs a supported game and at least 15 Mbps. |
| Do downloaded Classics games expire? | There is no separate download timer, but the entitlement requires an active qualifying subscription and the title must remain available. |
| Where is a streamed save stored? | On PlayStation. |
| Where is a downloaded game’s save stored? | On the PS5 or PS4 console storage. |
| How do you move progress between streaming and downloading? | Upload the save to PlayStation Plus cloud storage, then download it to the other version or console. |
Which PlayStation Plus plan includes Classics Catalog games?
Classics Catalog access and Cloud Streaming are benefits of PlayStation Plus Premium. The lower PlayStation Plus tiers do not provide the same Classics Catalog benefit. Your membership is attached to your PlayStation Network account, so the account must hold the qualifying plan when you browse, download or stream a title.

On a console, selected PlayStation Plus benefits can be shared with other users on one primary PS4 and one PS5 when Console Sharing and Offline Play are enabled. Sharing does not turn a Classics game into a separately owned license: the qualifying account, the console-sharing settings and the title’s continued catalog availability still control access.

What happens if you downgrade?
Sony says that a downgrade removes benefits exclusive to the previous tier when the downgrade takes effect. If Premium is the reason your account can use the Classics Catalog or Cloud Streaming, plan the change as an access change rather than as a way to keep those features permanently.
How to download a Classics game on PS5 or PS4
Sony’s official path is the same on both supported consoles: open PlayStation Plus, enter Classics Catalog, choose an eligible game and choose Download. The Download option appears only when the signed-in account has the required membership plan.
- Sign in to the PlayStation Network account that has PlayStation Plus Premium.
- Open the PlayStation Plus area from the console home screen.
- Select Classics Catalog.
- Open the game’s product page and check that it is included for your account.
- Select Download, then allow the installation to finish.
- Start the game from your game library or the PlayStation Plus page.
On PS5
The installed game uses PS5 console storage, and its downloaded-game save is written to that console’s storage. If you later move to streaming, do not assume the same save will be selected automatically; use the cloud-transfer procedure below.
On PS4
The same PlayStation Plus and Classics Catalog route applies. A downloaded PS4 game writes saved data to PS4 console storage. PlayStation Plus cloud storage for PS4 saved data has a 1,000-file limit, so a large collection of individual save files may require cleanup before an upload succeeds.
How streaming works and what you need
Streaming also requires the correct PlayStation Plus plan and a broadband connection of at least 5 Mbps. For 1080p streaming, Sony specifies a game that supports 1080p and a connection of at least 15 Mbps. Those are service requirements, not a promise that every connection will deliver identical latency or image quality; household traffic, Wi-Fi conditions and distance to the service can affect the result.
Streaming restrictions
Sony lists several features that are unavailable while a Classics Catalog game is being streamed:

Streaming queues can also occur. A downloaded copy avoids dependence on a streaming queue and on continuous broadband during play, but it consumes local storage and remains subject to the same subscription entitlement.

Downloaded Classics games do not have a separate countdown that starts when installation finishes. The practical rule is different: downloading installs the game files, while the license remains a subscription entitlement. Sony describes PlayStation Plus games as playable for as long as the subscriber remains active.
Three events can therefore stop a downloaded game from launching:
- Subscription lapse or cancellation: when the qualifying membership is no longer active, the account loses the benefit even though files remain on the drive.
- Plan change: downgrading from Premium removes benefits exclusive to Premium when the downgrade takes effect.
- Catalog removal: some Classics Catalog titles have announced end dates. Sony publicizes those dates ahead of removal; after the title leaves, its catalog entitlement is no longer available.
Reactivating a qualifying subscription can restore access when the title is still offered. It cannot restore a catalog entitlement for a game that has already left the service. A downloaded installation should therefore be treated as a local copy of a currently licensed service game, not as a purchase you own indefinitely.
Where saves are stored: streaming versus downloading
| How you play | Save location | Automatic transfer to the other method |
|---|---|---|
| Streamed PlayStation Plus game | Stored on PlayStation. | No. |
| Downloaded PlayStation Plus game | Stored on PS5 or PS4 console storage. | No. |
Because the locations differ, starting a downloaded copy after streaming can appear to reset your progress, and starting a stream after playing locally can show a different save. Sony specifically warns that saved data is not automatically transferred between streamed and downloaded games.
Move a streamed save to a downloaded copy
- Finish playing the streamed version and make a current save in the game.
- Open the console’s PlayStation Plus saved-data or cloud-storage controls.
- Upload the streamed game’s save to PlayStation Plus online storage.
- Install or open the downloaded version on the target PS5 or PS4.
- Use the same account, open the console’s saved-data controls and download the uploaded save to console storage.
- Launch the downloaded game and confirm that the expected profile and progress appear before creating a new save.
Move a downloaded save to streaming
- On the console containing the downloaded save, upload the latest saved data to PlayStation Plus cloud storage.
- Start the streamed version while signed in to the same PlayStation Network account.
- Download the save from online storage when the console presents its saved-data controls.
- Load the game and verify the correct save slot. Keep the cloud copy until you have confirmed the transfer.
The cloud is a transfer mechanism, not an automatic merge. If both versions have newer progress, choose which save is authoritative before uploading; downloading one save can overwrite or replace the local version presented by the other method.

Cloud-storage limits
PlayStation Plus cloud storage provides up to 100 GB of PS5 saved data and 100 GB of PS4 saved data. PS4 saved data is also limited to 1,000 files. These are service capacity limits, so an upload can fail when the relevant storage or file-count allowance is full. Delete obsolete cloud saves only after preserving any progress you may need.

| Factor | Download | Stream |
|---|---|---|
| Internet during play | Not continuously required after installation and entitlement checks. | Broadband required; Sony specifies at least 5 Mbps. |
| 1080p requirement | Not a streaming requirement. | Supported title plus at least 15 Mbps. |
| Storage | Uses PS5 or PS4 console storage. | Game files are not installed as a local copy. |
| Save location | Console storage. | PlayStation. |
| Feature restrictions | Does not use the streaming restriction list. | No broadcasting, Share Play, Share Screen, Remote Play, mouse, keyboard, PSVR, PS Move or third-party-controller support. |
| Queues | Not subject to a streaming queue once installed. | Queues may occur. |
Choose downloading when you have enough console space and want to reduce dependence on network conditions. Choose streaming when you want to try a title without installing it or when local storage is limited, provided your connection and controller setup meet the service restrictions. Either choice still requires Premium access and continued catalog availability.
Troubleshooting common Classics Catalog problems
The Download button is missing
- Confirm that the signed-in account has PlayStation Plus Premium.
- Open the title from the Classics Catalog rather than from an unrelated store listing.
- Check whether the title has an announced catalog end date or has already left the service.
- Verify that the account is the one used for the subscription; console sharing does not change which account owns the entitlement.
The game is installed but will not start
Check the membership status first, then check whether a downgrade, cancellation or lapse removed the Premium benefit. If the subscription is active, verify that the game has not reached its published catalog end date. The presence of files on the console does not prove that the account still has a playable license.
The game starts with no progress
Determine whether you changed from streaming to downloading or vice versa. The two methods use different save locations. Upload the desired save to cloud storage from its original method, then download it to the target method while using the same account.
Streaming quality is poor or unavailable
Check that the connection meets the 5 Mbps minimum, or 15 Mbps for supported 1080p streaming. Other household traffic and wireless interference can reduce effective throughput. If the service places you in a queue, waiting is required; installing the game avoids that particular streaming dependency.
Quick Recap
What to remember before relying on a Classics game
- Premium is the plan that includes the Classics Catalog and Cloud Streaming.
- A download is an installation, not an ownership transfer.
- Active membership is necessary, but it is not sufficient if the title has left the catalog.
- Streaming and downloading maintain separate save locations.
- Cloud storage is the manual bridge between those save locations.
- Keep important saves in cloud storage until a transfer has been tested successfully.
