A proxy IP address (or hostname) tells your device which proxy server to contact; the port tells it which service endpoint on that server to use. To connect, your app must also use a protocol the proxy supports and, when required, the right credentials. An IP and port alone do not guarantee that a server is a working proxy, secure, or anonymous.
What a proxy IP address and port mean
A proxy sits between a client—such as a browser—and a destination server. Your client connects to the proxy endpoint, and the proxy forwards the request or creates a tunnel to the destination, depending on the protocol and configuration. The destination may see the proxy’s outgoing IP address instead of your public IP.
- Proxy IP address or hostname: identifies the proxy host.
- Port: identifies the service endpoint on that host.
- Protocol or scheme: tells the client how to communicate with that endpoint, such as HTTP or a supported SOCKS protocol.
- Credentials: may be required to authenticate to the proxy.
The host and port must match the details supplied by the proxy provider or network administrator, and the client must support the specified protocol. A familiar port number is only a convention; it does not prove that a service is a proxy or that it is trustworthy.
How a proxy handles web traffic
Without a proxy, a client generally connects directly to a destination. With a proxy, the client connects to the proxy, which then handles the next part of the route. The destination can therefore see the proxy’s egress IP, but this routing change is not by itself a guarantee of anonymity. The proxy operator becomes a party to the connection.

HTTP proxying and HTTPS destinations
An HTTP proxy can carry traffic to an HTTPS website using the HTTP CONNECT method. The client asks the proxy to open a tunnel to the destination host and port, then negotiates TLS with the destination through that tunnel. Chromium documents this behavior as preserving end-to-end TLS: the proxy can handle connection information, but the TLS session is between the client and destination. Chromium’s proxy documentation describes its implementation.
HTTPS through CONNECT does not mean that every connection from the client to the proxy is encrypted. An HTTPS proxy transport, where supported, uses TLS for the client-to-proxy connection; this is distinct from tunneling an HTTPS destination through an HTTP proxy. Implementations vary, so confirm which scheme the application and service support.

Other proxy protocols
SOCKS is another proxy protocol family. The available standards and product documentation cited here do not establish a complete comparison of SOCKS versions, DNS behavior, UDP support, or client compatibility. Use the protocol explicitly supported by both your application and the proxy service rather than assuming one type is universally best.

For advanced context, IETF RFC 9484, a Standards Track document published in October 2023, defines proxying IP packets in HTTP by creating an IP tunnel through an HTTP server acting as an IP proxy. This extension is not needed to configure an ordinary browser proxy.

What to enter in proxy settings
There is no single address syntax that works in every browser, operating system, or app. Some clients provide separate fields for a server and port; others ask for a scheme or a complete proxy URL. Follow the format requested by the client and use the exact scheme, host, port, and credentials supplied for your endpoint. Do not copy example endpoints from unrelated services.
Configure a proxy in Windows
Microsoft documents automatic detection, setup scripts, and manual proxy settings in Windows. The labels and available controls can differ by Windows version and configuration. In the Settings app, open Network & internet, then Proxy. Choose the option your administrator or provider specified:

- Unlimited bandwidth, unlimited data.
- Super-fast VPN and one tap connect.
- Free worldwide multiple servers.
- Works with all type of data carries. (Wi-Fi, 4G, LTE, 3G).
- No registration, sign up needed.
- Automatically detect settings: lets Windows detect settings when the network provides them.
- Use setup script: enter the script address provided by your organization or service.
- Manual proxy setup: enter the proxy server name or IP address and port in the fields shown. Configure any exclusions or authentication details as directed.
Microsoft’s Windows proxy setup guide covers these options. These settings may not affect every app: some applications use system settings, while others have their own proxy configuration.

Check settings when a connection fails
- Confirm that the selected scheme or protocol matches the service’s instructions.
- Check the hostname or IP address and port for typing errors.
- Verify any required username, password, or other authentication method.
- Confirm that the application uses the proxy setting you changed; it may have separate settings or bypass rules.
- Ask the administrator or provider whether the endpoint is reachable from your network and whether your account is authorized.
HTTP proxy behavior and configuration are implementation-dependent: software can differ in supported schemes, authentication, bypass lists, name resolution, and whether settings apply to one app or more broadly. RFC 9110 describes HTTP semantics, while MDN’s guide to proxy servers and tunneling explains common web-proxy behavior.

What a proxy does—and does not—protect
A proxy changes the route your traffic takes and may change the IP address visible to a destination. What the proxy operator can observe depends on the protocol, encryption, and service design. Plain HTTP traffic can be readable in transit. With an HTTPS CONNECT tunnel, TLS normally protects the request contents between your client and the destination, although the proxy can still handle connection metadata such as the requested destination.
Privacy properties are specific to the service, not inherent to every proxy. For example, Cloudflare says its Privacy Proxy uses a MASQUE tunnel in which the proxy learns the destination hostname and port, but not request paths or content; the destination sees the proxy’s egress IP. That description applies to Cloudflare’s documented design, not to proxies generally. See Cloudflare’s explanation of how Privacy Proxy works.
A proxy is not automatically a VPN, a security guarantee, or an anonymity guarantee. Do not trust an unfamiliar proxy solely because someone supplied an IP address and port; understand who operates it and what its service terms say before routing traffic through it.
