Short answer: keep a working Proxmox VM’s machine type and firmware stable, choose a CPU model based on every node that may run the VM, and use VirtIO devices when the guest has the required drivers. Use emulated hardware when legacy compatibility matters more than efficiency. The host CPU model can expose the most features, but it is suitable for live migration only when source and destination nodes provide the same CPU model and feature set.

These settings are not cosmetic. QEMU/KVM presents a complete virtual computer to the guest: motherboard, chipset, controllers, disks, network cards, display hardware and optional peripherals. Changing that virtual hardware can alter boot behavior, available instruction sets, driver requirements and migration compatibility.

The three decisions that matter most

  1. Machine type: the virtual motherboard and chipset contract. Keep it unchanged after deployment unless a documented feature, compatibility fix or upgrade requires a change.
  2. CPU model: the processor identity and instruction extensions visible to the guest. Select it for the whole migration domain, not just the fastest individual node.
  3. Device model: emulated hardware maximizes compatibility; VirtIO paravirtualized hardware generally reduces overhead but requires guest drivers.

Proxmox exposes these choices through each VM’s hardware and options configuration. The labels and available models depend on the installed Proxmox VE and QEMU versions, so verify the list shown by your own cluster before applying a setting copied from another host.

What “virtual hardware” means in Proxmox

Proxmox VE runs QEMU/KVM virtual machines. QEMU presents an entire virtual PC to the operating system, including a virtual mainboard, storage controllers, disks, network adapters, display devices and other peripherals. The guest normally sees hardware that looks like a conventional computer and can therefore boot without vendor-specific software.

That abstraction has a cost. Emulating each register, interrupt and device operation consumes host CPU time. Paravirtualized devices use a contract designed for virtualization: the guest driver cooperates with the hypervisor instead of pretending every operation is occurring on a physical controller. When the guest has a suitable VirtIO driver, this normally lowers emulation overhead and improves throughput and latency consistency.

Virtual hardware is also a compatibility boundary. A VM can be moved only when the destination can reproduce the CPU features, machine version, firmware layout and device behavior that the guest expects. The most efficient setting on one node is not automatically the safest setting for a cluster.

Machine types: the VM’s virtual motherboard

A machine type defines the virtual motherboard and chipset presented by QEMU. It determines which buses, interrupt behavior, firmware interfaces and virtual controllers are available. Think of it as a versioned compatibility contract between the VM configuration, QEMU and the guest operating system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why machine type should remain stable

Once an operating system is installed and working, keep its machine type pinned. A guest may have installed drivers, boot entries or device names that depend on the existing virtual layout. Changing the machine type can add or remove devices, alter PCI topology or change how firmware exposes them. Most guests continue to work, but an unplanned change can produce a boot failure or require driver repair.

When a change is justified

  • A newer machine version provides a feature required by the workload.
  • An operating-system release or driver requires a newer chipset model.
  • An upgrade procedure explicitly calls for a machine-version change.
  • A documented compatibility issue is resolved by moving to another machine family.

Do not change the machine type merely because a newer option appears in the drop-down list. Record the current value, create a tested backup or clone, and plan a maintenance window. For Windows guests, follow Proxmox’s upgrade guidance on machine-version pinning rather than changing the value opportunistically.

Machine type and firmware are separate choices

BIOS or UEFI determines how the guest firmware starts and how its boot loader accesses disks. The machine type determines the virtual motherboard. They interact, but switching firmware is not a harmless alternative to switching machine type. A UEFI installation may use a GPT layout and an EFI system partition, while a legacy BIOS installation may use a different partition and boot-loader arrangement. Changing firmware can therefore make an otherwise intact disk unbootable.

CPU models: choosing between host and x86-64-v2/v3/v4

The virtual CPU model controls the processor identity and instruction features visible inside the guest. Applications can use an instruction extension only if the selected model exposes it, and a VM can migrate only to a destination that supports the exposed feature set.

CPU choice What the guest sees Strength Main constraint Use when
host A close representation of the node’s physical CPU Maximum access to that host’s supported features Strongly tied to the source CPU model and feature set All migration targets have the same CPU model and compatible firmware/microcode
x86-64-v2 A generic baseline with the v2 instruction level Safer portability across many modern x86 nodes Does not expose features above the selected baseline A heterogeneous or expanding cluster needs a conservative common denominator
x86-64-v3 A generic v3 instruction baseline More modern vector and instruction capability than v2 Every possible destination must support v3 You have verified that all migration targets meet the v3 baseline
x86-64-v4 A generic v4 instruction baseline The highest generic baseline listed here Least portable; older nodes may not provide the required features The cluster is deliberately limited to hardware supporting v4

Proxmox migration guidance summarizes the rule: the CPU type should match the underlying hardware closely while still allowing live migration. In practice, host is a cluster-wide decision. It is appropriate when every node that can receive the VM exposes the same CPU model and relevant features. If nodes differ by generation or the cluster may grow, choose the highest generic x86-64-v<X> baseline that every destination supports.

How to decide for a cluster

  1. List every node that may run the VM now and after a planned expansion.
  2. Identify the oldest CPU generation and the instruction baseline common to all of them.
  3. Choose host only if the nodes are effectively identical for CPU compatibility.
  4. Otherwise select a generic baseline such as x86-64-v2, x86-64-v3 or x86-64-v4 that all destinations support.
  5. Test the guest and its applications after changing the model, especially software that uses cryptography, vector math, media codecs or vendor-specific extensions.

Reducing a VM from host to a generic model can hide instructions that an application previously used. The VM may still boot, but an application could select a slower code path or refuse to start if it requires a missing extension. Increasing the model has the opposite risk: the VM may fail to start on an older destination.

Custom CPU models and migration risks

Proxmox stores custom CPU definitions in /etc/pve/virtual-guest/cpu-models.conf. A custom model can report a chosen base model, add or subtract individual flags, hide KVM identification, set a Hyper-V vendor ID and report physical address bits.

Custom flags are useful for a narrowly defined compatibility requirement, but they make the migration contract harder to audit. In particular, setting physical address bits to host can prevent live migration to a CPU with a different value. Treat custom models as infrastructure code: document why each flag exists, apply the same definition wherever the VM may run, and test a migration before relying on it in production.

Emulated devices versus VirtIO

Axis Emulated device VirtIO device
Guest compatibility Looks like conventional hardware and usually works with built-in or legacy drivers Requires a VirtIO driver in the guest
Host overhead Higher because QEMU emulates a physical controller Usually lower because guest and hypervisor cooperate
Performance Often adequate for light or legacy workloads Generally preferable for sustained storage or network workloads
Portability Broad compatibility with older operating systems Portable when the destination supports the same virtual VirtIO device
Migration impact Few guest-driver surprises, but still tied to the VM’s machine layout Driver availability must be preserved in the guest image

There is no universal winner. Compatibility, overhead, portability and required feature exposure must be considered together. A legacy guest without VirtIO support is better served by an emulated controller than by a faster device it cannot boot from.

Choosing each device category

Storage controllers and disk buses

VirtIO SCSI is a common paravirtualized choice for modern guests. It can provide efficient queueing and lower overhead, but the guest must have the appropriate VirtIO SCSI driver before the boot disk is moved.

IDE, SATA and SCSI emulation can maximize compatibility with older installers and operating systems. They are useful for recovery media, legacy guests or a staged migration in which the VirtIO driver has not yet been installed. Before changing a boot disk controller, confirm the driver is present, record the original bus and controller, and keep a rollback copy. A data disk is a safer place to test a new controller than the system disk.

Network adapters

Use a VirtIO network device when the guest has a VirtIO network driver. It normally minimizes host processing and is the preferred efficiency choice for current operating systems. Use an emulated network model for an older guest that lacks VirtIO support.

Changing the virtual NIC can cause the guest to create a new interface name, lose a static address or apply a different firewall rule. Plan to reapply network configuration inside the guest, not only in the Proxmox hardware panel.

Display and console

Select a display model supported by the guest and appropriate to how administrators access the VM. A server that is managed over the network may need only a basic virtual display, while a desktop installation needs a model its graphics stack recognizes. GPU passthrough and mediated devices are separate, host-dependent designs; they are not simply faster display-model selections and can reduce portability.

USB, TPM, audio and random-number devices

Add optional peripherals only when the workload needs them. A virtual TPM may be required by a particular operating-system security feature, audio is relevant to desktop or media workloads, and a virtual random-number generator can supply entropy to guests that need it. Each extra device expands the VM’s compatibility surface and can complicate migration, so remove unused hardware rather than accumulating defaults.

Physical passthrough

PCI, USB or other physical-device passthrough gives a guest direct access to hardware. That can be necessary for specialized workloads, but it binds the VM to a particular host, requires IOMMU and device-isolation planning, and usually prevents ordinary live migration. Treat passthrough as a deliberate availability trade-off, not as a general performance upgrade.

Safe procedures for changing virtual hardware

Before any change

  • Write down the current machine type, BIOS/UEFI mode, CPU model, disk bus, NIC model and optional devices.
  • Confirm the guest has drivers for the target controller or VirtIO device.
  • Take a backup or snapshot appropriate to the workload, and verify that you can restore it.
  • Check every intended migration target for CPU features, machine-version support and required host devices.
  • Schedule a shutdown for changes that affect boot hardware; do not assume a hot-plug operation is safe.

Changing the CPU model

  1. Open the VM’s hardware or processor settings and note the current CPU type and any custom flags.
  2. Choose the common model supported by all possible destination nodes.
  3. Apply the setting while the VM is stopped unless your exact Proxmox version documents a safe online change.
  4. Boot the guest and test its critical services and applications.
  5. Perform a controlled migration to at least one other node before declaring the setting production-ready.

Changing a disk to VirtIO SCSI

  1. Install and verify the guest’s VirtIO storage driver while the original boot controller is still active.
  2. Power off the VM and record the disk identifier and boot order.
  3. Add or select a VirtIO SCSI controller, then attach a test data disk first.
  4. Boot and verify that the guest sees the test disk and that expected device names and permissions remain correct.
  5. Only after the test succeeds, move the boot disk and confirm the boot-loader and init system start normally.

Changing a network adapter

  1. Record the current MAC address, IP settings, VLAN or bridge assignment and guest firewall rules.
  2. Install the target VirtIO driver if necessary.
  3. Shut down the VM if the adapter cannot be safely hot-plugged in your configuration.
  4. Replace the adapter, preserving the intended network attachment.
  5. Inside the guest, assign the expected address to the new interface and remove stale interface configuration only after connectivity is confirmed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Live-migration checklist

  • Use a generic CPU baseline unless every destination has the same physical CPU model and features.
  • Avoid custom flags that expose host-specific values, especially physical address bits set to host.
  • Keep machine type and firmware consistent across the VM’s lifecycle.
  • Ensure VirtIO drivers are installed in the guest and available after restore or cloning.
  • Do not rely on physical passthrough for a VM that must migrate automatically.
  • Check that the destination has the same storage visibility, network bridge or VLAN, and required virtual TPM or other stateful devices.
  • Test migration with a noncritical VM before changing a production template.

Common symptoms and targeted fixes

The VM will not boot after changing a disk bus

The guest likely lacks the target storage driver or the boot order changed. Reattach the original controller, boot, install and verify the VirtIO driver, then repeat the conversion with the original disk identifier and boot order preserved.

Windows starts but loses its network configuration

A new virtual NIC is often treated as a different adapter. Restore the intended IP and DNS settings on the new interface, check that the Proxmox bridge and VLAN are unchanged, and remove the old adapter only after confirming service connectivity.

Migration reports an unsupported CPU feature

The source CPU model exposes an instruction the destination cannot provide. Power off the VM, select a generic x86-64-v<X> baseline common to the cluster, and test applications that may depend on the hidden feature.

A machine-type change causes missing devices

Review the VM’s hardware list and boot firmware settings against the previous configuration. Restore the former machine type if possible, then consult the Proxmox version-specific upgrade guidance before attempting the change again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A passthrough VM cannot migrate

This is normally an architectural limitation rather than a transient error. Move the workload to a host with the required device, redesign it around a virtual device, or accept host affinity and provide availability through a different recovery plan.

A practical decision framework

For a current operating system in a homogeneous cluster, use a stable machine type, a VirtIO SCSI disk controller, a VirtIO network adapter and either host CPU mode or the cluster’s documented generic baseline. For a mixed-generation cluster, prefer the highest x86-64-v<X> model all nodes support. For an old guest, retain emulated storage and networking until drivers are verified. For a specialized device, use passthrough only after accepting its migration and host-maintenance constraints.

The safest configuration is the one whose guest drivers, CPU features, firmware layout and destination hosts have all been tested together. Performance improvements are valuable, but a predictable migration and recovery path is usually worth more than a setting that is marginally faster on one server.
