Proxima Centauri is part of the Alpha Centauri system. It is the same star astronomers call Alpha Centauri C, while Alpha Centauri A and B form a much closer binary pair. “Alpha Centauri” can therefore mean either the bright A/B pair or all three stars together, depending on context. Proxima is the nearest individual star to Earth; the A/B pair is only slightly farther away.

The short version: one system, three stars

The apparent disagreement between “Proxima Centauri” and “Alpha Centauri” comes from using names at different levels. Proxima Centauri is one specific star. Alpha Centauri A and Alpha Centauri B are two other specific stars. The Alpha Centauri system is the collective name for all three.

In everyday astronomy, “Alpha Centauri” often refers to the bright pair, A and B, because they appear close together and are the stars visible as a prominent southern-sky target. In a technical or system-wide discussion, the same name can include Proxima. Proxima is not an unrelated star that happens to be nearby; it is the third member, also designated Alpha Centauri C.

What each name means

Proxima Centauri and Alpha Centauri C are the same star

“Proxima Centauri” and “Alpha Centauri C” are two labels for one red-dwarf star. The word Proxima means “nearest,” reflecting its current status as the closest individual star to Earth. The letter C places it in the same naming sequence as Alpha Centauri A and B.

The two names are useful in different situations. “Proxima Centauri” is the familiar name in discussions of nearby stars, flares and exoplanets. “Alpha Centauri C” makes the system membership explicit, especially when a comparison involves the A/B pair. Saying that Proxima is Alpha Centauri C is therefore not a claim that it is a fourth object or a separate system.

Alpha Centauri A and B are the close pair

Alpha Centauri A and B are individual stars that orbit a common center of mass. They are often written together as Alpha Centauri AB. When a source says “Alpha Centauri” while discussing a binary orbit, stellar brightness or the possible planet around A, it is usually referring to this pair rather than to Proxima.

The pair is not a single star with two names. A and B have different sizes and brightnesses, and each has its own physical properties. A is a near-Sun twin, while B is somewhat smaller and dimmer. Their proximity to one another is why the pair is treated as a binary rather than as two unrelated stars in the same direction.

The Alpha Centauri system includes all three

Use “Alpha Centauri system” when the subject is the complete gravitational arrangement: A, B and Proxima. NASA describes it as a triple-star system. This broad term prevents a common mistake—treating Proxima as outside Alpha Centauri simply because it is far from the bright pair on the sky.

How the three-star architecture works

A and B form a tight binary

Alpha Centauri A and B are the system’s close pair. NASA’s 2024 presentation gives an orbital period of about 80 years for their mutual orbit. That period describes the movement of A around B and B around A; neither star is stationary while the other circles it. Both orbit their shared center of mass.

Calling A and B a binary is important because it changes how astronomers interpret observations. A possible planet around A, for example, would orbit one member of a binary environment rather than a solitary Sun-like star. The companion’s gravity is part of the system’s architecture even though A and B remain much closer to one another than either is to Proxima.

Proxima is the distant third member

Proxima is gravitationally associated with the A/B pair but occupies a much wider orbit around the pair’s combined mass. NASA’s 2024 page presentation gives a timescale of more than half a million years for that orbit. This is vastly longer than the roughly 80-year A/B orbit, so the system is described as hierarchical: a compact binary nested inside a much larger three-body arrangement.

“Distant” here does not mean “unrelated.” Proxima’s membership is the reason the system has three stars rather than two. It does mean that the stars do not form a visually tight trio in the same way A and B do, and their relative positions change on very different timescales.

Which one is closer to Earth?

Proxima Centauri currently holds the nearest-star distinction. NASA places the system at roughly 4.25–4.3 light-years from Earth and notes that Alpha Centauri AB is a very close second. The practical answer to “Which is closer, Proxima or Alpha Centauri?” is therefore Proxima, if “Alpha Centauri” means the A/B pair.

The wording becomes different if “Alpha Centauri” means the whole system. Proxima is then part of the thing being named, so asking which is closer compares a member with the system that contains it. The cleanest phrasing is:

  • Nearest individual star: Proxima Centauri.
  • Bright binary pair just behind it: Alpha Centauri A and B.
  • Collective system: Alpha Centauri, containing all three.

A light-year is a distance unit—the distance light travels in one year—not a measure of travel time for a spacecraft. The 4.25–4.3-light-year figure describes how far away the stars are from Earth, while the orbital periods describe how long the stars take to move around one another.

How the stars differ physically

Alpha Centauri A: the near-Sun comparison

Alpha Centauri A is described by NASA as a near-Sun twin. That comparison is about its broad stellar character: it is much more similar to the Sun than a red dwarf is. It is one reason the A/B pair is often considered when astronomers discuss environments around Sun-like stars.

“Near-Sun twin” does not mean identical to the Sun, and it does not establish that any planet around A has Earth-like conditions. Stellar similarity can inform the kinds of questions scientists ask, but it is not evidence by itself for an atmosphere, surface water or life.

Alpha Centauri B: smaller and dimmer

Alpha Centauri B is somewhat smaller and dimmer than A. It remains part of the same close binary and contributes to the system’s combined light. Its separate designation matters because a planet orbiting B would experience a different stellar environment from one orbiting A, even though the two stars are gravitationally linked.

Proxima Centauri: a cool red dwarf

Proxima is much smaller and cooler than either member of the A/B pair. It is a red dwarf, the type of star that can look faint compared with Sun-like stars while still being scientifically important because of its proximity. Its small size does not make it uninteresting; in fact, the contrast between its closeness, planets and intense flares drives much of the current attention.

The three stars therefore should not be treated as interchangeable examples of “the nearest star.” A and B provide the Sun-like and binary context; Proxima provides the red-dwarf and exoplanet context.

What is known about planets?

Proxima has three confirmed planets in current NASA reporting

NASA’s 2025 Webb report says that three confirmed planets orbit Proxima Centauri. This is the strongest planet statement in the current comparison: the planets are associated with the individual star Proxima, not with the A/B pair as a whole.

Planet counts can change as observations improve, so the date and wording matter. “Confirmed” means the evidence meets the relevant standard for recognizing those worlds as planets; it does not mean that each planet has a measured atmosphere or is suitable for life.

Proxima b is the best-known example

NASA/JPL-Caltech’s 2024 presentation gives Proxima b a mass of 1.27 Earth masses and an orbital period of 11 days. It lies in Proxima’s habitable zone, the range of orbital distances where temperatures could, under suitable atmospheric conditions, permit liquid water on a surface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A habitable-zone location is not a habitability verdict. NASA states that Proxima b’s atmosphere cannot yet be checked with available capability and that its actual habitability is unknown. Without knowing whether an atmosphere exists, how thick it is, or how it responds to the star’s activity, scientists cannot infer that Proxima b supports life from its orbit alone.

The possible planet around Alpha Centauri A is not confirmed

Separate from Proxima’s confirmed planets, a 2025 Webb result reported strong evidence for a possible giant planet around Alpha Centauri A. The correct description remains “possible” or “candidate,” not “confirmed.” Strong evidence can motivate follow-up observations, but it is not the same as a final planetary detection.

This distinction prevents a frequent category error. The system has confirmed planets around Proxima, while the reported giant planet near A is still awaiting confirmation. A headline that turns the candidate into a confirmed planet overstates what the observation establishes.

What the current comparison does not establish about B

The NASA material summarized for this comparison identifies confirmed planets around Proxima and a possible planet around A. It does not establish a confirmed planet around Alpha Centauri B. That is a statement about the evidence currently being discussed, not proof that B has no planets. Detection limits and future observations can change the inventory.

Why radiation changes the habitability discussion

Proxima’s flare environment

Proxima is an active red dwarf. NASA’s 2018 Chandra discussion reports that a habitable-zone planet around Proxima receives about 500 times Earth’s average X-ray dose, with a large flare capable of raising the exposure to as much as 50,000 times Earth’s average level.

Those figures describe radiation exposure, not a direct measurement of life or a complete atmospheric model. High-energy radiation can erode or alter an atmosphere, affect surface chemistry and create difficult conditions for biology, but the outcome depends on factors such as atmospheric composition, magnetic protection and the planet’s history—many of which are not yet known for Proxima b.

The A/B environment is comparatively quieter in the cited discussion

The Chandra summary presents the Alpha Centauri AB environment as more favorable than Proxima’s flare-dominated setting in terms of radiation bouts. Tom Ayres, quoted by NASA, described this as good news for the ability of possible life on planets around Alpha Cen AB to survive radiation episodes from the stars.

That comparison is relative, not a guarantee. A quieter stellar environment would remove one difficulty, but it would not demonstrate that a planet exists around A or B, possesses an atmosphere or is inhabited. Radiation is one factor in habitability, not a complete habitability test.

How to use the names accurately

If you mean… Use this wording Why
The red dwarf with the nearby planets Proxima Centauri, or Alpha Centauri C Both names identify the same star
The close binary Alpha Centauri A and B, or Alpha Centauri AB These are the two stars in the tight pair
All three stars together The Alpha Centauri system This explicitly includes Proxima
The nearest individual star Proxima Centauri It currently holds that distinction
The possible giant planet near the Sun-like star A possible planet around Alpha Centauri A The 2025 Webb result is strong evidence, not final confirmation

When a sentence could be interpreted either way, add the component name. “A planet around Alpha Centauri” is ambiguous because it could refer to A, B or the system generally. “A possible giant planet around Alpha Centauri A” identifies the intended star and preserves the candidate status.

Common misconceptions corrected

“Proxima is outside Alpha Centauri.”

Incorrect. Proxima is Alpha Centauri C and is included in the broad Alpha Centauri system. It is far from the A/B pair compared with their mutual separation, but it remains the system’s third stellar member.

“Alpha Centauri is one star.”

Usually incorrect. The name may be used casually for the bright region or specifically for the A/B pair, but the Alpha Centauri system contains three stars. A, B and C are separate stars with different properties.

“Proxima Centauri and Alpha Centauri are two destinations.”

Not in the usual astronomical naming sense. Proxima is one member of Alpha Centauri. Treating the names as unrelated destinations hides the system’s structure and makes the distance comparison confusing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“A habitable-zone planet is habitable.”

Not necessarily. Proxima b’s 11-day orbit and habitable-zone location identify where it orbits, not whether it has an atmosphere, liquid water or life. NASA says those questions remain unresolved because the atmosphere cannot yet be checked with available capability.

“Strong evidence means the planet around A is confirmed.”

No. The 2025 Webb result supports a possible giant planet around Alpha Centauri A. Until follow-up work confirms it, it should remain a candidate in careful writing.

Why the distinction matters for astronomy

The naming difference is more than vocabulary. It determines which star’s mass, brightness, activity and planets are being discussed. A statement about Proxima’s X-ray flares cannot automatically be applied to Alpha Centauri A or B. A statement about the A/B binary orbit does not describe Proxima’s 11-day planet. A statement about the system’s distance can cover all three, but a statement about the nearest individual star points specifically to Proxima.

The architecture also shapes observing and mission questions. A and B behave as a close binary with an approximately 80-year mutual orbit, while Proxima’s orbit around the pair takes more than half a million years. Those are not interchangeable scales. Likewise, a planet around A would be evaluated in a Sun-like star’s binary setting, whereas Proxima b is evaluated around an active red dwarf whose radiation environment is much harsher.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using the narrowest accurate name keeps these contexts separate. It also makes later discoveries easier to interpret: a newly confirmed planet around B would add to the system’s inventory without changing the identity of Proxima or the meaning of Alpha Centauri C.

A reliable one-sentence answer

If someone asks, “Are Proxima Centauri and Alpha Centauri the same thing?” the most precise answer is: Proxima Centauri is Alpha Centauri C, one of the three stars in the Alpha Centauri system; Alpha Centauri A and B are the close binary pair that the shorter name often refers to.

That sentence resolves the apparent contradiction, identifies the star count, distinguishes the binary from the full system and explains why both names appear in discussions of the nearest stellar neighbors.
