Use a design prototype to agree on how an SVG control should look when hovered, pressed, and focused—but verify keyboard focus and activation in the actual app. A prototype can communicate the visual intent; it does not prove that the finished SVG is keyboard-accessible or behaves correctly in a browser.
What to decide before you prototype
Start by naming four states: default, hover, pressed, and keyboard focus. Decide whether focus should share hover’s visual treatment or have its own cue. A pointer hovering over a control and a keyboard user focusing it are different conditions, so do not rely on hover styling alone to communicate focus.
For each state, specify what changes—such as fill, stroke, scale, or position—and what stays fixed. If the state animates, record the property, direction, duration, and easing, along with the expected behavior when a user prefers reduced motion. This gives the developer something concrete to implement and verify.

Prototype hover and press in Figma
- Build the default and alternate appearances. Create the SVG control’s default look, then define a hover appearance and a pressed appearance. Keep the pressed treatment visibly distinct from hover if the control is held down.
- Connect the hover state. In the prototype interaction settings, choose the While hovering trigger. Figma documents this as showing the state while the pointer is over the hotspot and returning to the original frame when the pointer leaves. See Figma’s prototype trigger documentation.
- Connect the pressed state. Choose While pressing. Figma documents the temporary state as lasting while the mouse or trackpad is held, or the screen is pressed, and reverting on release. This helps distinguish a momentary press from simply pointing at the control.
- Review the transition. Figma’s prototype settings include animation type, direction, matching-layer animation, easing or spring, and duration. Its documentation gives a duration range of 1 ms to 10 seconds. These are settings for prototype transitions, not a production CSS timing specification; choose and implement the app’s behavior separately. See Figma’s connection and transition guidance.
Interactive component variants can represent state changes and combine distinct triggers. Figma’s documented trigger list does not show a dedicated focus trigger, so a hover variant should not be presented as proof that keyboard focus has been designed or tested. See Figma’s interactive component guidance.

- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Keep focus design separate from the hover preview
SVG 2 recognizes CSS :hover, :active, and :focus interaction states. Its focus model covers sequential keyboard navigation and tabindex for focusable SVG elements. A focus appearance should remain visible: custom styling can replace a browser’s default indicator, but should not remove focus feedback completely. See the W3C SVG 2 interaction specification.
Use the prototype to agree on the intended focus appearance if it helps, but verify the actual focus state in the implemented SVG. Figma’s documented hover and press triggers do not establish that prototype playback validates browser keyboard focus.

Turn the prototype into an implementation handoff
Give the developer a short state specification rather than only a recording or animated frame. Include the visual change, when it begins and ends, and what keyboard users should see. Motion-inspection and code-copying features described in Figma’s Figma Motion announcement can assist handoff, but they do not replace checking the final SVG in its application context.
- Default: the control’s resting appearance and target context.
- Hover: the pointer-over appearance and its return behavior when the pointer leaves.
- Pressed: the held-down appearance and its return behavior on release.
- Focus: the visible keyboard-focus cue and whether it differs from hover.
- Motion: the properties animated, direction, duration, easing, and reduced-motion expectation.
- Activation: the action that occurs when the control is activated, including by keyboard.
SVG 2 notes that an element made focusable only with tabindex receives a click event on non-mouse activation. That does not, by itself, define a useful app action. Make sure the control’s keyboard activation is connected to the intended behavior.

Validate the built SVG in the app
Test the implementation where it will actually appear, at its intended size and against its real background. Check the states and behavior individually rather than treating a successful prototype playback as a pass.
