Proton’s official autumn/winter 2026 roadmap, published October 15, lays out the company’s next six months for Mail, Drive, Pass, VPN and Lumo. The common goal is to make leaving Big Tech less disruptive through easier migration, broader device support, more controlled sharing and built-in assistance. Some features are rolling out now, while others remain development plans without firm release dates.

What Proton’s six-month roadmap covers

Proton describes the plan as “what’s coming over the next six months.” It is not a single product launch: each service has a different delivery stage. Mail is concentrating on search and account migration, Drive on encrypted search and platform coverage, Pass on safer credential sharing and administration, VPN on a consistent client experience and connection controls, and Lumo on developer access and dedicated apps.

Service Status reported on October 15, 2026 Main direction
Proton Mail Features rolling out or being prepared Mobile search, Gmail connection and business onboarding
Proton Drive Features in development Encrypted content search, migration and more desktop coverage
Proton Pass Mixed: some updates released, others planned Sharing safety, monitoring and business administration
Proton VPN Cross-platform rollout plus planned controls Consistent design, kill-switch improvements and timed pause
Lumo API release announced; apps planned Embedding the assistant in other products and improving device access

Proton Mail: mobile search and easier migration

Full-text search on Android and iOS

Mobile content search is rolling out for Proton Mail on Android and iOS. It is intended to search message content rather than only the information currently indexed in a message list. Proton says it still cannot read the contents of users’ inboxes, preserving the service’s stated privacy model while making messages easier to find.

The roadmap does not give a single completion date for every account. Availability can therefore differ while the rollout proceeds.

Gmail connection inside the mobile app

Proton is making Gmail connection setup available directly inside its mobile app. The planned workflow is designed to let users send and receive messages using their Gmail address and import recent messages, reducing the need to configure a separate migration process first.

Proton also plans an easier way to link accounts for people who created separate Proton accounts through VPN, Drive or Pass. That matters for users who accumulated multiple logins while adopting individual services and now want one connected Proton identity.

Free Proton subdomains for business teams

Business teams are due to get free Proton subdomains so they can begin sending and receiving mail without first configuring a registrar or managing DNS records. The roadmap presents this as a way to lower the setup barrier for a team starting with Proton Mail; it does not specify the available subdomain names or a launch date.

Proton Drive: encrypted search, migration and Linux

Search beyond file names

Drive search is being expanded on mobile and the web beyond file names. Proton says progress will be incremental because end-to-end encryption makes content search technically difficult. The roadmap therefore signals continuing improvements rather than an immediate, fully equivalent replacement for unencrypted cloud-search systems.

A less manual move from Google Drive

Proton is continuing performance work on the shared Drive engine and developing an easier switch from Google Drive. The intended migration avoids downloading everything locally and manually uploading it again. No final migration workflow or release date is specified, so users should not assume the automated path is available yet.

Linux and macOS desktop coverage

A Linux beta is in development. Proton says the initial launch will likely consist only of a headless sync daemon, meaning a background synchronization service rather than a full graphical desktop client. Linux users should therefore expect command-line or service-oriented setup at first.

On macOS, Proton plans selectable-folder sync to match the behavior already available on Windows. This gives users more control over which local folders synchronize instead of requiring one fixed sync scope.

Performance context from the previous roadmap

In its spring/summer 2026 roadmap, Proton reported that downloading shared files was 70% faster and uploading to a shared folder was 30% faster. Those are Proton’s own reported improvements from that roadmap, not independent benchmark results, and they describe the earlier work rather than a guarantee for every account or network.

Proton Pass: safer sharing and business controls

Updates already listed as available

Proton’s updates index lists folders, URL matching and compromised-password alerts as available on October 15, 2026. Those items should be treated as released updates. Other Pass items in the roadmap remain planned unless Proton separately confirms their release.

Share access without exposing the password

A planned safer-sharing system will let a recipient sign in without seeing the password itself. Proton also plans expiration for shared items and vaults, allowing an owner to limit how long access remains valid instead of leaving a shared credential permanently available.

Pass Monitor v2

Pass Monitor v2 is planned to alert users to weak or reused passwords, compromised passwords and breached email addresses. The aim is to combine password-quality warnings with breach awareness so users can identify both risky credentials and exposed accounts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Folders, autofill and credential exchange

The roadmap includes folders and shared subfolders, deeper autofill support on macOS and Android, and credential exchange. These changes target users who need to organize credentials, share only part of a vault and use Pass more consistently across desktop and mobile operating systems.

Administration and off-boarding

More granular user and group policies are planned for organizations. Proton also lists vault transfer during employee off-boarding and a consolidated admin console, which would make it easier for administrators to reassign access and manage policies from one place.

Proton VPN: one design, stronger connection controls

Consistent app design across platforms

Proton is rolling out a consistent VPN app design to Linux, macOS, iOS/iPadOS and Android TV after an earlier redesign on Windows. The goal is a more uniform experience when users move between devices, although the roadmap does not claim that every platform will receive every control at the same time.

Kill-switch work

Kill-switch behavior is being improved across platforms to reduce the chance of traffic continuing outside the VPN when a connection drops. An advanced kill switch is specifically planned for macOS. Proton does not provide the final macOS behavior or release date in this roadmap.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Timed pause and automatic resume

Timed pause and resume is planned first for Windows and Android. Users will be able to choose an interval, pause the VPN and have it reconnect automatically when that interval ends. The roadmap does not state when the feature will reach other platforms.

WireGuard development from the spring roadmap

Proton’s spring/summer 2026 roadmap also described a new client-side WireGuard codebase, with beta testing planned on major platforms. That earlier work provides context for the continuing VPN development, but the autumn/winter roadmap’s concrete user-facing items are the design rollout, kill-switch improvements and timed pause.

Lumo: an API for products and new apps

Lumo API

Proton is releasing a Lumo API for developers and businesses to embed the assistant in their own products and workflows. Proton says the API will provide the same zero-access encryption and no-logging protections it describes for the Lumo app. The announcement establishes the release direction, but it does not list API pricing, quotas, supported programming languages or a general availability date.

Mobile reliability and a desktop app

Faster, more reliable Lumo apps for iOS and Android are planned, along with a dedicated desktop app. The spring/summer roadmap had already identified desktop and API work, so the latest announcement shows that the API has moved from an earlier plan to a release announcement while the dedicated desktop client remains planned.

How to read the roadmap before changing services

The safest distinction is between a rollout, an announced release and a plan. Mail’s mobile search is rolling out; Pass’s folders, URL matching and compromised-password alerts are listed as available; Lumo’s API is described as being released; and many Drive, Pass, VPN and app improvements are still planned. Proton gives the overall six-month window but not individual delivery dates for most items.

For a migration decision, check the feature you need rather than assuming the whole roadmap is live. A Linux Drive user, for example, should plan around a likely headless beta rather than a polished graphical application. A business evaluating Pass should separate the released monitoring-related updates from the planned sharing and administration controls. Someone moving from Gmail should distinguish the announced in-app connection and recent-message import from a complete historical-mail migration.
