Use Wine for general Windows software and Proton for Windows games in Steam. Proton is built from Wine, but Valve adds game-focused graphics components, runtime changes and Steam integration. That distinction affects installation, configuration, file locations and compatibility. Neither tool is a Windows virtual machine, and neither guarantees that a particular application or game will work.
Wine and Proton in one sentence
Wine is a general-purpose compatibility layer for running Windows applications on Linux and other POSIX-compatible systems. Proton is Valve’s Steam-focused compatibility tool for running Windows games on Linux. Proton uses a modified version of Wine together with graphics API implementations and Steam Play behavior designed around games.
That means the practical choice is usually straightforward:
- For a standalone Windows desktop program, begin with Wine.
- For a Windows game purchased or launched through Steam, begin with Proton supplied by Steam.
- For a native Linux Steam game, Proton is normally unnecessary because Steam installs and runs the native build directly.
Compatibility remains application-specific. The program’s version, launcher, graphics requirements, DRM and online anti-cheat system can all change the result.

What Wine actually is
A compatibility layer, not a virtual machine
Wine’s project description calls it “a compatibility layer capable of running Windows applications on several POSIX-compliant operating systems, such as Linux, macOS, & BSD.” In practical terms, Wine translates and implements Windows programming interfaces so that software can use the Linux host rather than requiring a complete Windows installation as a guest operating system.
This is why the project name is commonly expanded as “Wine Is Not an Emulator.” Wine is not pretending to be a different computer processor in the way a traditional hardware emulator does. It also is not a copy of Windows. It supplies the interfaces and supporting behavior that a Windows program expects, while the Linux system provides the kernel, drivers and hardware access.
Wine’s intended workload
Wine’s scope covers ordinary Windows applications as well as games. That makes it the natural starting point for software downloaded from a vendor’s website, installed from an offline installer or launched outside Steam. Examples include a Windows-only utility, an older business application or a program distributed as an .exe installer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches“General-purpose” does not mean “universal.” A program may depend on a Windows component that Wine does not implement fully, use a launcher that fails under compatibility layers, require a particular graphics API or rely on a driver-level service. Compatibility can also change between releases of the same application, so a result for one version should not be treated as a promise for every version.
What Proton adds to Wine
Modified Wine plus graphics implementations
Valve describes Proton as a tool used with the Steam client that lets Windows-exclusive games run on Linux by using Wine. Valve’s Steamworks documentation gives the fuller description: Proton combines modified Wine with graphics API implementations. The company summarizes it this way: “Proton is the compatibility layer that allows Windows games to run on Linux by using a modified version of Wine and a collection of high-performance graphics API implementations.”
The important point is that Proton is not simply a new name for an unchanged Wine installation. It is a bundle assembled and configured for game workloads. Its components, runtime configuration and per-game launch options are exposed through Steam, reducing the amount of manual setup most players would otherwise have to do.
Steam-managed behavior
Steam knows which compatibility tool a game is using, can download the required Proton files and can apply a selected version to an individual title. This integration is the main reason Proton is usually easier to try for a Steam game than a hand-built Wine setup. Steam also creates a separate Wine prefix for each game, keeping Windows-style files and settings isolated from other titles.

Valve’s FAQ places those per-game prefixes in the relevant Steam library under steamapps/compatdata/[appid]/pfx/. The [appid] value is the game’s Steam application ID. Inside the prefix are the simulated Windows drive, registry data and other per-title configuration. The exact library location depends on where Steam installed that game.
Proton vs. Wine: the practical differences
| Area | Wine | Proton |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Windows applications on Linux and other POSIX-compatible systems | Windows games used through Steam on Linux |
| Foundation | Wine compatibility layer | Modified Wine plus graphics API implementations and Steam-focused components |
| Typical setup | Install and configure the application and its Wine environment yourself or through a Wine-based manager | Steam downloads and manages the compatibility tool and creates a per-game prefix |
| Best first choice | Standalone applications outside Steam | Windows games in Steam |
| Configuration scope | Usually organized around the Wine prefix you create for an application | Steam exposes per-game compatibility selection and launch options |
| Compatibility evidence | Depends on the exact application and version | Depends on the exact game, Proton version, launcher, graphics stack, DRM and anti-cheat setup |
This is a workload distinction, not a claim that one project is universally faster or more reliable. The official material reviewed for this comparison provides no numeric head-to-head performance benchmark, so performance should not be inferred from the names alone.
Which one should you use?
For a standalone Windows application
Choose Wine first when the software is not being launched by Steam. Wine’s stated project scope directly covers Windows applications, and it gives you a general environment in which to install the program. You may need to create a prefix, install application-specific dependencies or select a compatible Wine build, depending on the software.
Check the application’s own documentation and current community compatibility information before committing important work to it. A program that opens may still have broken printing, hardware acceleration, fonts, plug-ins, updates or file dialogs. Test the functions you actually need rather than stopping at a successful installer.

Use Proton supplied through Steam. Valve’s repository documentation recommends that most users use the Proton version provided by the Steam client. Steam can install the tool, associate it with the game and keep the game’s prefix separate from other titles.
For a game that Steam has not automatically selected, open the game’s Properties, choose Compatibility, enable Force the use of a Specific Steam Play compatibility tool, and select a Proton version. Canonical’s Ubuntu guide documents that current path, although Steam’s labels and layout can change over time.
For a native Linux Steam game
Do not force Proton merely because the game appears in Steam. Canonical’s Ubuntu documentation explains that native games install and run without Proton. Steam Play downloads Proton libraries for non-native games when compatibility support is enabled, so a native Linux build normally uses its own Linux executable and libraries instead.

For a game that Steam marks unsupported
Steam Play can be enabled for other titles, and you can force a Proton version for a specific game, but neither setting is a guarantee. Consult current title-specific reports on ProtonDB before spending time troubleshooting. Reports can differ by distribution, graphics driver, Proton release and game update, so treat them as evidence about a particular configuration rather than a universal verdict.

- Open Steam on Linux and go to the Steam Play or compatibility settings.
- Enable compatibility tools for Valve-supported titles. If you want to try games without an official support designation, enable the option for other non-native titles as well.
- Install the game normally from your Steam library.
- If the default tool does not work, open the game’s Properties and then Compatibility.
- Check Force the use of a Specific Steam Play compatibility tool and select an installed Proton version.
- Launch the game and test the functions that matter: startup, rendering, audio, controller input, saves, networking and multiplayer.
- If the game still fails, compare the selected version with current ProtonDB reports and the game’s own support information before changing several settings at once.
Steam’s interface and available Proton versions are revised over time. The menu path above reflects Canonical’s current Ubuntu guide and should be treated as a current reference rather than a permanent promise about labels.
Can Proton run Windows applications outside Steam?
Proton is designed and documented as a tool used with the Steam client, while Wine is the general-purpose project for Windows applications. It is technically possible for experienced users to reuse Proton components in other launchers or manually constructed environments, but doing so gives up much of the Steam integration that makes Proton convenient. You would need to handle the prefix, executable path, dependencies, launch options and updates yourself.
For a non-Steam desktop application, selecting Wine is therefore the clearer and more supportable starting point. For a non-Steam game, the choice depends on the launcher and the game’s compatibility reports; Proton should not be presented as a drop-in replacement for every Wine workflow.
Why a Windows program may work in Wine but a game fails in Proton
Wine and Proton share code, but a game exercises a broader and often stricter set of dependencies. The following factors can determine the outcome:
- Graphics API: a game may require a specific DirectX feature, Vulkan support or a particular driver behavior. Proton’s graphics components target common game APIs, but hardware and driver support still matter.
- Launcher behavior: a separate launcher may install services, update itself, open embedded web views or expect Windows-only paths.
- Digital rights management: DRM can block startup or interfere with updates even when the game itself renders correctly.
- Online anti-cheat: support is selective and often requires the game developer to enable and configure compatibility-layer support.
- Game updates: a previously working title can regress after an engine, launcher, DRM or anti-cheat update.
- Application version: a desktop program’s newest release may require Windows APIs that an older release did not.
These are reasons to investigate the exact title and version, not reasons to declare that Wine or Proton is universally broken.
Anti-cheat and multiplayer limitations
Valve documents support for some common middleware, including Easy Anti-Cheat and BattlEye, but manual configuration requirements may apply. The game developer or publisher must support the relevant compatibility mode; installing Proton alone cannot add that support. Valve’s Steamworks documentation says kernel-space anti-cheat solutions are not currently supported.

As a result, a single-player game may be fully usable while its multiplayer mode is unavailable, or one multiplayer title may work while another using a different anti-cheat configuration does not. Check current reports for the exact game and avoid treating a store badge or a successful launch as proof that online play will work.
Understanding prefixes and isolation
A Wine prefix is a directory that acts like a separate Windows environment. It contains a simulated drive layout, registry files and application settings. Keeping programs in separate prefixes can prevent one application’s dependencies or configuration from affecting another.
With a manually managed Wine installation, you decide how prefixes are created and maintained. Proton automates this arrangement for Steam games: each title receives its own prefix under the Steam library’s steamapps/compatdata/[appid]/pfx/ path. This isolation helps explain why changing a Proton setting for one game normally does not change another game’s environment.
Prefix isolation is not the same as a sandbox or security boundary. A Windows program running through Wine or Proton still has the access granted to the Linux user and should be treated as untrusted software.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting without making the problem harder
Start with a clean baseline
Record the Linux distribution, graphics driver, application or game version and selected Wine or Proton version. Test once with the default settings before adding launch options. This gives you a known baseline and makes later changes reversible.
Change one variable at a time
For a Steam game, test the Proton version selected in the game’s Compatibility properties, then compare one alternative version if current compatibility reports suggest it. Avoid changing the Proton version, graphics settings, launcher options and prefix simultaneously; otherwise you cannot tell which change helped.

Use title-specific compatibility information
For Steam games, consult ProtonDB and read reports that match your distribution, graphics hardware and game version. Canonical’s Ubuntu guide warns that unsupported titles vary considerably in functionality. A report from a different graphics stack or an older game update may not apply to your system.

Collect a Proton log when needed
Valve’s Proton README documents per-game launch options and the PROTON_LOG=1 logging option. Use that option when a support forum or developer asks for a Proton log. A log is most useful when paired with the exact game version, Proton version and a description of the failure, such as “crashes after the launcher” or “offline mode works but multiplayer does not.”
Know when to stop
If the title depends on unsupported kernel-space anti-cheat, a missing graphics capability or a launcher that cannot run under the selected environment, repeated prefix changes may not solve it. Check whether the developer supports Linux or compatibility layers and decide whether a native build, a different title or a Windows installation is required for that workload.
Common misconceptions
“Proton is just Wine with a different name.”
Proton is based on Wine, but Valve combines modified Wine with graphics API implementations and Steam-specific management. The shared foundation explains why knowledge transfers between them; the additional components explain why their normal setup and target workloads differ.
Recommended Free Tools
“If Wine runs one Windows program, Proton runs every game.”
Compatibility is not transferable in that way. Games add graphics, launcher, DRM, networking and anti-cheat requirements. Test each title and version independently.
“Forcing Proton guarantees a non-native game will start.”
Forcing a tool only tells Steam which compatibility layer to try. It does not change the game’s code, add missing hardware support or override an incompatible anti-cheat system.
“A successful launch proves everything works.”
Verify saves, controller support, audio, cinematics, performance, updates and online modes. A title can pass its opening screen while an important feature remains broken.
A decision checklist
- Is the software launched through Steam? If yes and it is Windows-only, start with Proton.
- Is it a native Linux Steam game? Run the native build without Proton.
- Is it a standalone Windows application? Start with Wine.
- Does the workload require a launcher, DRM or online anti-cheat? Check current, title-specific compatibility information.
- Do you need separate configurations? Use a dedicated Wine prefix, or rely on Proton’s per-game prefixes in Steam.
- Are you comparing speed? Do not assume a winner from the names; no official head-to-head benchmark establishes a universal performance difference.
- Has the title or tool recently updated? Recheck compatibility because Proton releases, Steam labels and per-title behavior change.
Bottom line for Linux users
Wine is the broad compatibility layer; Proton is Valve’s game-oriented Wine bundle integrated with Steam. Pick Wine when you need to run a Windows application outside Steam. Pick Proton when Steam is managing a Windows game. Keep a separate prefix or Steam-managed environment for each workload, verify the exact application’s current compatibility and treat anti-cheat, DRM, launcher and graphics requirements as independent checks. That approach gives you the shortest path to a working setup without assuming that either project can reproduce every Windows program.
