Wine is the general compatibility layer; Proton is Valve’s Steam-focused gaming tool built on Wine. Wine helps Linux run Windows applications in a variety of setups. Proton packages Wine with additional components and Steam integration so Windows-only games can launch through the Steam client.
They are therefore related, not competing products at the same level. If the game is in your Steam library, start with the Proton version supplied by Steam. Use standalone Wine when you need to run Windows software outside Steam or when your chosen application requires a Wine setup rather than Steam’s per-game management.
Wine and Proton in one sentence each
Wine is compatibility software that translates the Windows API calls made by an application into services Linux can provide. It is the underlying technology used in many Windows-on-Linux solutions, but it is not a complete game store, launcher, or container system.

Proton is a tool for the Steam client that lets Windows-exclusive games run on Linux. Valve’s Proton README describes it this way: “Proton is a tool for use with the Steam client which allows games which are exclusive to Windows to run on the Linux operating system. It uses Wine to facilitate this.” Proton adds gaming-oriented pieces, Steam integration, and a managed environment around Wine.

The practical consequence is simple: Wine is the foundation and Proton is a Steam-oriented package built on that foundation. Choosing between them depends mainly on where the game comes from and how much of the setup you want Steam to manage.
Proton vs. Wine: the important differences

Those distinctions explain why installing Wine does not automatically give you the same experience as selecting Proton in Steam. Proton is not a wholly separate replacement for Wine; it is a purpose-built distribution and integration layer around it.
When should a Linux gamer use Proton?
For a game already in Steam
Use the Proton version offered by the Steam client first. Valve’s project documentation recommends the Steam-provided Proton for most users. Steam can associate the selected tool with an individual game, keep that game’s compatibility data separate, and provide the launch context Proton expects.
The client’s labels can change between Steam releases, but the workflow is generally: open the game’s properties, find its compatibility controls, enable the option to force a compatibility tool, and select a Proton build. If no override is needed, leaving the default selection lets Steam choose its current recommendation.
- Install the game in Steam and allow Steam to finish downloading its files.
- Open the game’s properties from your Steam library and open the compatibility section.
- Choose the Steam-supplied Proton option when you need to force a tool. Start with the normal or stable build rather than a testing branch.
- Launch the game and test it without extra launch options. Change one variable at a time if something fails.
This approach keeps the game tied to Steam’s supported distribution of Proton. It also gives you a consistent place to change the Proton version later if a game-specific report identifies a known regression or fix.
For a Windows game or application outside Steam
Wine is the more natural starting point when the software is not being launched by Steam. Wine itself does not prescribe one universal installer or desktop workflow, and the appropriate prefix, runner, and configuration depend on the application. The evidence available for this comparison does not establish a current standalone Wine installation procedure, so there is no single command sequence that can safely be presented for every Linux distribution.
Proton can be useful only when the surrounding launcher or management tool explicitly supports it. Proton’s documented purpose is the Steam client, so treating it as a general replacement for every Wine setup can create avoidable configuration problems.

Proton, Steam Play, and Steam Linux Runtime are different layers
Valve uses several names that are easy to conflate:
- Steam Play is the broad label used in Steam’s interface for compatibility tools.
- Proton is the tool that runs Windows games on Linux, using Wine and additional components.
- Steam Linux Runtime is the container-runtime framework that supplies a controlled Linux user-space environment for compatible software.
Proton may use a Steam Linux Runtime container as part of its launch environment, but the two terms do not mean the same thing. Selecting a Steam Linux Runtime entry is not equivalent to selecting Proton, and installing a runtime container does not by itself provide Windows API compatibility.
Runtime generations associated with Proton releases
Valve’s Steam Runtime documentation currently maps Proton generations to these runtime generations:

These are project mappings, not promises about performance or compatibility. Valve can change the mapping as new Proton and runtime releases appear. The distinction is useful when reading launch diagnostics: a failure may involve the game, Proton, the container runtime, graphics drivers, or their interaction rather than “Wine” in isolation. A Wine prefix is a directory that acts like a separate Windows installation for an application. It contains the Windows-style registry, drive mappings, configuration, and user directories that the application sees.
Proton creates a separate prefix for each Steam game. Valve’s Proton FAQ places the prefix in the Steam library that contains the game:
steamapps/compatdata/[appid]/pfx/
[appid] is the game’s Steam application ID. Because each game has its own directory, changing one title’s prefix normally does not change another title’s registry or Windows-style configuration.

Where saves and settings may be
The prefix can also contain files stored by a game in a Windows-style user directory. That means local saves, configuration files, and shader or cache data may live inside the prefix rather than in a Linux-native folder. Cloud synchronization, when supported by the game, is a separate Steam feature and should not be assumed to protect every local file.

Deleting, moving, or recreating a prefix can remove settings and locally stored saves. Before resetting compatibility data, copy important save folders and configuration files to a safe location. A clean prefix is a troubleshooting step, not a routine maintenance task; use it only after checking that the problem is actually caused by the game’s compatibility environment.
Graphics: DXVK, wined3d, and what the choice means
Windows games commonly issue Direct3D calls. Proton documents two translation paths:
- DXVK: a Vulkan-based path used by Proton for supported Direct3D workloads.
- wined3d: an OpenGL-based path that can be selected for Direct3D 9, 10, and 11.
The Vulkan path is part of Proton’s normal gaming design, but that does not mean it is guaranteed to work on every machine. The result depends on the game, Proton build, Linux graphics stack, and installed drivers. Switching paths is a diagnostic experiment, not a universal speed setting.
Advanced launch options documented by Proton
Steam lets you place environment variables in a game’s launch options. The following examples come from Valve’s Proton documentation:
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%selects the OpenGL-based wined3d path instead of Vulkan-based DXVK for Direct3D 9, 10, and 11.PROTON_LOG=1 %command%enables a Proton log that can help diagnose launch or rendering failures.
Use one option at a time and remove it after testing. Neither variable is a general performance enhancement: wined3d may solve a Vulkan-specific problem but may perform differently, while logging adds diagnostic output without fixing the underlying error. Proton’s README documents these options and their scope.
Choosing a Proton branch
Steam exposes several Proton branches with different maturity and risk profiles. Valve’s Proton Versions page describes them as follows:

Do not treat a newer branch as automatically better. A branch can contain a fix for one title and a regression for another. Keep a backup of important local saves before testing a branch with a higher risk profile, especially Bleeding Edge.
Compatibility: what Proton does not promise
Proton’s purpose is to make Windows games runnable on Linux; it is not a certification that every game works on every system. A title may behave differently after a game update, a Proton update, a graphics-driver change, or a Steam Runtime change.

Compatibility can depend on:
- the exact game build and launcher behavior;
- the Proton release or branch selected;
- the Steam Linux Runtime generation used by that Proton release;
- the GPU, Vulkan or OpenGL support, and installed Linux graphics drivers;
- the game’s Direct3D version and the translation path selected; and
- the contents of that game’s prefix and its configuration files.
The official materials cited here do not establish a current compatibility percentage, game count, benchmark difference, or universal list of working titles. Avoid claims that Proton is always faster than Wine or that all Windows games run flawlessly. For a particular title, consult current game-specific reports and test the exact Proton branch and hardware combination you intend to use.

Step-by-step troubleshooting for a Steam game
1. Return to a known baseline
Remove experimental launch options, select the Steam-provided Stable Proton build, and launch the game once. This distinguishes a problem caused by a custom setting from one that occurs with the default tool.
2. Check the game-specific context
Confirm which Proton branch is selected and whether the game recently updated. Compatibility reports are version-sensitive; a report for one Proton build or game release may not apply to another.
3. Test the graphics translation path
If the failure appears related to Vulkan rendering and the game uses Direct3D 9, 10, or 11, test PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%. Record whether the game launches, renders correctly, and remains stable. Remove the option if it does not help.
4. Capture a Proton log
Add PROTON_LOG=1 %command% to the launch options and reproduce the failure. Keep the log with the Proton version, game build, runtime generation when known, and graphics hardware information; those details make a report far more useful than “it does not start.” Remove the variable after collecting the diagnostic output.

5. Change branches only for a reason
Try Experimental when its feature or a current game-specific report addresses your symptom. Use Hotfix only for the targeted issue it was released to address. Avoid Bleeding Edge unless you accept untested code and have protected local saves.
6. Treat the prefix as game data
If a reset is necessary, locate the game’s steamapps/compatdata/[appid]/pfx/ directory in the library that contains the installation. Back up saves and configuration first, then recreate the prefix using Steam’s normal management flow. A reset can remove local state, so it should be the final diagnostic step rather than the first suggestion.
Common misconceptions
“Proton and Wine are two unrelated alternatives.”
Proton uses Wine. The difference is the surrounding package, Steam integration, graphics components, runtime handling, and per-game management.

It is not. Steam Linux Runtime is the container framework; Proton is the Windows-game compatibility tool. Steam Play is the broader interface label.
“The newest Proton branch must give the best results.”
Branches trade maturity for new fixes. Stable is QA-tested, Experimental is a testing channel, Hotfix is targeted, and Bleeding Edge is automated and untested.
“A game that launches once is guaranteed to keep working.”
Game updates, Proton releases, runtime changes, drivers, and prefix contents can alter the result. Compatibility is a moving combination of those components, not a permanent property of the title alone.
Bottom line for Linux gamers
Use Proton for Steam games because it is Wine adapted and integrated for that job. Start with the Steam-provided Stable build, keep each game’s prefix and saves in mind, and change branches or launch options only for a specific troubleshooting reason. Use Wine when you need a general Windows-application compatibility layer outside Steam. Neither choice guarantees universal compatibility, and Proton should not be judged as a blanket performance winner without title- and system-specific evidence.
