Use Proton first for a Windows game you own on Steam. Valve designed Proton for the Steam client, Steam distributes its Proton versions, and Valve says most users should use the versions supplied by Steam. Choose Lutris when you need one library for games from several stores or launchers, or when a non-Steam game needs a particular Wine or emulator configuration. Neither tool is universally faster or more compatible: the result depends on the game, updates, drivers, distribution, hardware and configuration.
What Proton and Lutris actually do
Proton is Steam’s compatibility path
Valve describes Proton as “the compatibility layer that allows Windows games to run on Linux by using a modified version of Wine and a collection of high-performance graphics API implementations.” Proton translates the Windows game’s expectations into interfaces Linux can provide, while adding graphics and other components needed by many modern games.
Proton is distributed and managed through the Steam client. Steam can select a Proton version for an individual game, and advanced users can install a locally built Proton version. Valve’s Proton repository states: “Most users should use Proton provided by the Steam Client itself.” That is the sensible default unless a particular title’s current compatibility information points to another build or setting.
Lutris is a library and launcher manager
Lutris describes itself as an open gaming platform and library manager for Linux. It can connect games and accounts from services such as Humble Bundle, GOG and Steam, and it integrates with launchers including Battle.net, Epic Games Store, EA App and Ubisoft Connect. Lutris does not sell games; its FAQ explains that it helps install and launch games obtained from other stores.

Lutris uses “runners.” A runner can be a Windows compatibility layer such as Wine or an emulator. This gives you a central place to install non-Steam games, select a runner, and keep different games on different configurations. That flexibility is useful, but it also means more choices and more setup decisions than the Steam-managed Proton route.

Choose based on where the game comes from
Steam game: start with Proton
For a title in Steam, Proton is the direct, integrated route. Steam manages the compatibility-tool installation and exposes Steam Play settings and per-game compatibility choices. You keep the game, updates, controller configuration and launch process in the same client.
That recommendation is about integration, not a promise that every Steam game works. Valve’s Steam Support documentation says Steam Play can allow Windows-only games to “potentially work” on Linux. “Potentially” matters: a game can require a different Proton version or launch option, or fail because of an update, anti-cheat system, driver issue or other title-specific dependency.
Several stores or launchers: use Lutris as the organizer
If your library is divided among GOG, Epic Games Store, Battle.net, EA App, Ubisoft Connect, Humble Bundle and Steam, Lutris can present those installations in one Linux library. The launcher integration remains relevant because some games need their original store client for authentication, patching or multiplayer.

Lutris does not replace the stores or grant ownership. You still need to own the game and sign in to the relevant service. Its value is the common installation and launch layer, not a new game marketplace.
Non-Steam game with a special Wine setup: prefer Lutris
Lutris is the more natural choice when you need to select among runners, use a community or store-specific installer, or keep one game isolated from another game’s configuration. A game may work best with a particular Wine build while another needs a different runner or an emulator. Lutris exposes those choices instead of limiting you to Steam’s Proton workflow.
A game that already runs badly: investigate the title, not the brand name
Switching from Proton to Lutris, or the reverse, is not a guaranteed fix. First check current compatibility information for the exact game, distribution, GPU and driver stack. Then test the documented per-game runner or Proton settings. Compatibility can change after a game update, a launcher update, a driver release or an anti-cheat change, so an old success report may no longer describe your system.

How to set up a Steam game with Proton
- Install and update the Steam client for your Linux distribution. Proton is intended to be used by Steam, so use the client’s own compatibility-tool management rather than downloading random builds as your first step.
- Open Steam’s Steam Play or compatibility settings. Enable the option that allows Steam to use compatibility tools for Windows games. Steam then makes Proton versions available for eligible titles.
- Install the Windows game from your Steam library. Steam handles the Proton prefix and the normal compatibility components as part of the game’s installation and first launch.
- Select a per-game compatibility tool only when needed. In the game’s properties, use the compatibility section to choose a Proton version. Keep the Steam-provided default unless current information for that title gives you a reason to change it.
- Launch once, then evaluate the actual game. Check whether the game reaches its menu, renders correctly, accepts input, saves settings and connects to the services you need. A successful launch alone does not prove that every feature works.
- Use launch options for a documented problem. Valve’s Proton documentation covers per-game launch options and runtime overrides. Apply one change at a time so you can identify which setting helped or caused a regression.
Using a locally installed Proton build
Advanced users can install a local Proton build and select it in Steam. Valve’s repository explains that Steam must be restarted to detect a newly installed local compatibility tool. This path is useful for testing a fix or a newer change, but it adds another version to maintain. If the Steam-provided build works, it is simpler and remains Valve’s recommended route for most users.

How to set up a non-Steam game with Lutris
- Install Lutris using your distribution’s package instructions or the official Flatpak route. Use the current directions on the Lutris download page, because package names and driver instructions vary by distribution.
- Account for the installation method. Lutris says users of typical package installations should install a recent Wine version and the appropriate graphics drivers. Its guidance notes that the separate Wine installation step is not needed when running Lutris from Flatpak. Driver requirements still depend on your GPU and distribution.
- Connect the service that owns the game. Lutris can integrate supported stores and launchers. Sign in through the service’s normal authentication flow; Lutris does not provide ownership or bypass a store’s requirements.
- Choose or run the game’s installer. Follow the installer’s prompts for the game files, install location and launcher account. Keep the game in a location your Linux user can read and write.
- Select a runner and review its options. Start with the runner suggested by the installer. Change the Wine or emulator version only when the game’s current guidance calls for it, then keep a note of the working choice.
- Launch from the Lutris library. Confirm that the launcher, game window, sound, input and save paths work. If a game needs a different runner, return to its configuration rather than changing every game globally.
Why Lutris setup can take longer
Lutris is coordinating several independent parts: the store or launcher account, the game installer, a runner, graphics drivers and the game’s own files. A package installation can also require a separate Wine installation. Flatpak changes that dependency step, but it does not make every game identical; the exact runner and launcher behavior remain title-specific.
Runner choice, configuration and maintenance
Proton’s controlled choice
Steam’s model reduces configuration work. You normally select from Proton versions exposed by Steam, and each game can have its own compatibility-tool choice. This is convenient for a large Steam library because updates and installation are handled in one client. The trade-off is that Proton’s workflow is centered on Steam rather than a general-purpose launcher collection.
Lutris’s per-game flexibility
Lutris lets different games use different runners and settings. That can solve conflicts where a change that helps one title harms another. It also creates more maintenance: remember which runner works, preserve working configuration, and revisit it after a launcher, game, driver or distribution update.
Drivers are part of the result
Graphics drivers are not an optional detail for Windows-game compatibility. Lutris explicitly calls them out in its package-install guidance, and Proton’s graphics translation also depends on a functioning Linux graphics stack. If a title renders incorrectly, crashes before its menu or performs unexpectedly, verify the driver and distribution updates before assuming the runner alone is at fault.

Compatibility limits you should expect
- There is no official universal compatibility percentage. The official Proton and Lutris material does not provide a single rate comparing all games, and no such number would describe every distribution, GPU and driver combination.
- Anti-cheat can be decisive. A game’s anti-cheat configuration may block Linux or require a supported mode. Check current information for the exact title instead of assuming that another game’s result will transfer.
- Game and launcher updates can change behavior. A previously working title may need a new Proton or Wine version, while a new update can introduce a regression.
- Performance is workload-specific. Proton and Lutris can use related Wine technology, but the launcher, runner version, configuration and game engine determine the actual result. The available official descriptions do not establish a blanket speed ranking.
- Features may fail independently. A game can launch while its video playback, multiplayer, controller mapping, mod tools or launcher authentication does not work. Test the features you actually need.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The game does not start in Steam
- Confirm that Steam Play is enabled and that the game has a Proton compatibility tool selected.
- Try the Proton version currently recommended for the title, then test another documented version if necessary.
- Remove unneeded launch options and add back only a documented runtime override.
- Check Linux graphics-driver updates and current reports for the game’s anti-cheat or launcher.
The game starts but displays a black screen or broken graphics
Verify the graphics driver first, then test a different documented Proton or Wine runner. Record the change and reverse it if another game is affected. Do not treat a runner swap as proof that one platform is inherently better; rendering problems are often specific to the title and graphics stack.
A Lutris launcher cannot sign in or update
Test the original store or launcher requirements and account authentication. Confirm that the Lutris runner can access the install directory and that the game’s files are writable by your Linux user. If the problem appeared after an update, check the title’s current compatibility guidance and try the runner version associated with that report.
A local Proton build does not appear in Steam
Restart Steam. Valve’s Proton repository specifically notes that the client must be restarted to detect a newly installed local tool. If it still does not appear, return to the repository’s current installation instructions rather than guessing at directory names.

- Game purchased on Steam? Begin with Steam’s Proton.
- Games purchased from multiple stores or launched through several clients? Use Lutris to organize them.
- Need a particular Wine build, emulator or isolated per-game setup? Lutris provides the broader runner choice.
- Want the least configuration and automatic Steam integration? Stay with Steam-managed Proton.
- Does the title have anti-cheat, launcher or driver complications? Check current, title-specific compatibility information before choosing a different tool.
- Are you considering a switch because of one failure? Test the documented per-game settings and runner versions first; a platform-wide switch may not address the real cause.

Can Lutris use Proton?
Lutris is built around selectable runners, including Wine-based compatibility layers and emulators. Its official descriptions do not define Lutris as a replacement for Steam’s Proton management. For a Steam-owned game, Steam’s own Proton path remains the straightforward starting point; use Lutris when its library and runner management solve a non-Steam or multi-store need.

Is Proton only for games bought on Steam?
Valve documents Proton as a Steam Play compatibility tool intended for the Steam client. Non-Steam installations are better handled through a general launcher such as Lutris, where you can select a runner and configure the game independently.
Do I need to install Wine separately for Lutris?
It depends on how Lutris is installed. The official download guidance says typical package installations should have a recent Wine version and graphics drivers, while the separate Wine installation step is not needed when Lutris runs from Flatpak. Which one gives higher frame rates?
