Proton Mail can keep Google from reading messages exchanged between Proton accounts, but it does not make every email in your inbox unreadable to other providers. Ordinary email sent to or received from Gmail is generally not end-to-end encrypted; the practical privacy gain is strongest when both people use Proton or you deliberately use password-protected email or compatible PGP.
What Proton Mail protects—and what it does not
Proton Mail’s main privacy distinction is between end-to-end encryption and encryption of stored mail. Proton says messages between Proton Mail users are always end-to-end encrypted by default. The message is encrypted so that only the communicating users’ keys can read its contents.
Mail stored in a Proton mailbox is protected with zero-access encryption. Proton says it cannot access encrypted message content after it has been encrypted and written to disk. This protects stored content from Proton itself, but it does not retroactively encrypt copies held by the sender or recipient’s provider.
Neither protection means that every email passing through Proton is end-to-end encrypted. Ordinary messages exchanged with non-Proton addresses generally use TLS while traveling between mail servers, when the other server supports it. TLS protects a connection in transit; it does not prevent the receiving provider from reading or retaining the message.

Can Google read Proton Mail?
It depends on the sender, recipient, and encryption method:

Proton’s support documentation distinguishes these cases and notes that subject lines and sender/recipient addresses are encrypted in Proton’s system but are not end-to-end encrypted in the same way as message bodies and attachments. See Proton’s explanation of what is encrypted within Proton Mail.

If you connect a Gmail account to Proton, Proton says it can receive that account’s mail. Messages exchanged with non-Proton addresses still pass through Gmail unencrypted and remain visible to Google, according to Proton’s privacy policy. Moving an inbox into Proton does not erase copies or visibility at the other provider.

What Proton can still see
End-to-end encryption protects message content, not every detail needed to route and operate email. Proton’s privacy policy says SMTP limitations leave it access to certain metadata:

- Sender and recipient email addresses.
- The originating IP address of incoming messages.
- Attachment names and subject lines.
- When messages are sent and received.
Proton also says unencrypted external messages are scanned in memory for spam and viruses before being encrypted and stored; it says it cannot scan their content after encryption. These are Proton’s own disclosures, not a claim that Proton has no visibility into email activity.
The same policy says Proton Mail servers are located in Switzerland, Germany, or Norway, and that backups may be kept for up to 30 days. It describes an exception for some hide-my-email alias functionality hosted on contracted European cloud infrastructure. These details are disclosed in Proton’s policy.

Is Proton Mail free, or do you need a paid plan?
Proton’s plan comparison lists Free, Mail Plus, and Proton Unlimited. The company says the Free plan has the same level of encryption as its paid tiers. Paid plans primarily add capacity and convenience, such as more storage, additional addresses, custom domains, support for external email clients, and other features.

There is no need to pay simply to get Proton’s core encryption protections. Which paid tier includes a particular feature, and the current price, billing period, regional currency, storage allowance, or promotion, can change. Check the live Proton Mail plans and pricing comparison for the terms that apply where you live.

Security features beyond encryption
Proton describes its apps as open source and independently audited, with audit results available publicly. Its security overview also describes PGP support, password-protected messages to external recipients, Key Transparency, post-quantum-ready keys when enabled, and enhanced tracking protection. These are Proton’s product and security claims; the overview does not by itself establish the scope or findings of a specific audit.
For account sign-in, Proton supports optional U2F/FIDO2 hardware security keys, including YubiKey. A hardware key can strengthen two-factor authentication against phishing, but it does not encrypt mail. Anyone choosing this setup should plan a secure backup method or second key so losing the physical key does not lock them out. Details are in Proton’s Mail security overview.
Who should choose Proton Mail?
- A good fit: People whose regular correspondents also use Proton, or who can use password-protected email or PGP when exchanging sensitive information externally.
- Also a fit: People who want zero-access encryption for stored mail and understand that metadata and ordinary external email have different protections.
- Less compelling: People who mainly email Gmail or other external addresses using standard email and expect those providers to be unable to read the messages.
- Check before switching: Confirm the plan’s current storage, custom-domain, address, and external-client features meet your needs, and consider how you will migrate and communicate with contacts.
Proton’s product page says it has “over 100 million users and organizations”; Proton does not state a year for that figure on the page, so treat it as a company marketing claim rather than an independently verified count: Proton Mail product page.
