Proton Mail is the better fit when your priority is reducing the provider’s ability to read stored message content and using encrypted communication features. Gmail is the better fit when you depend on Google’s productivity ecosystem, collaboration tools, and a large free-storage allowance.
The services differ most in their encryption models, not simply in whether they use encryption. Proton documents zero-access encryption for inbox messages and attachments and offers end-to-end encrypted messages to non-Proton recipients through a password-protected workflow. Gmail documents encryption in transit and at rest, privacy controls for personalization and Smart features, and confidential mode—but those protections are not universal end-to-end encryption.

That table gives the practical answer, but the details matter. “Encrypted” can describe several different protections, and storage numbers are not directly comparable when one provider bundles mailbox space with other products.

How the encryption models differ
End-to-end encryption and zero-access encryption
Proton’s comparison page states that Proton Mail uses end-to-end encryption so that no one else can access the data, including Proton. Its encryption documentation describes zero-access encryption for inbox messages and attachments. In a zero-access design, the provider stores encrypted content and is not supposed to possess the keys needed to decrypt it during ordinary service operation.

Proton also supports end-to-end encrypted messages for recipients who do not use Proton. You create a password-protected message, and the recipient receives a link or notification that allows the message to be opened with the password. This is a deliberate encrypted workflow; it is different from sending an ordinary email to an address hosted by another provider.
Gmail’s encryption at rest and in transit
Google’s Gmail safety information says messages are encrypted at rest and while moving between Google data centers. Encryption in transit helps protect a message while it travels across the network. Encryption at rest protects stored data on Google’s systems. Both are important safeguards, but they do not mean that every message is end-to-end encrypted between you and the recipient.
In a conventional provider-managed mailbox, the service generally handles decryption so that it can provide search, filtering, malware scanning, synchronization, and other features. That is the central distinction from Proton’s documented zero-access and end-to-end options: the question is not merely whether data is encrypted, but who can access usable message content during service operation.

Gmail confidential mode can set an expiration date and restrict forwarding, copying, downloading, and printing through Gmail’s interface. These controls can reduce casual redistribution and are useful for some business or personal messages.
Confidential mode should not be described as universal end-to-end encryption. It is a set of access and interface controls, not a guarantee that only the sender and recipient can technically access the content. Treat it as an additional handling control, not as a replacement for an encrypted message workflow designed to prevent provider access.
Privacy controls and provider access
Proton’s data-storage and activity disclosures
Proton’s policy says stored data is encrypted and describes servers located in Switzerland, Germany, or Norway. The policy also lists account-activity records that Proton retains, including messages sent, storage used, total messages, and the time of the last login.
Those disclosures are useful because privacy has two dimensions: message-content protection and information about account use. Encrypted message storage addresses the first dimension. Activity records show that a privacy-focused provider can still retain operational data needed to run accounts, enforce limits, secure systems, and provide support. Read the current policy for the exact retention language that applies to your account and location.

Google controls for personalization and Smart features
Google’s Gmail privacy help says users can decide whether Gmail data is used to personalize their experience and provide Smart features in other Google products. Review those settings if you want to limit cross-product personalization or suggestions based on Gmail activity.
These controls give you choices about how Google uses account data for personalization. They do not change the basic distinction between provider-managed encryption and end-to-end encryption: turning off personalization does not make ordinary Gmail messages inaccessible to Google’s systems.
What privacy claims you should not combine
- Encryption in transit is not the same as end-to-end encryption.
- Encryption at rest is not the same as zero-access encryption.
- Gmail confidential mode is not a universal guarantee against provider access or copying outside Gmail’s controls.
- Using Proton does not automatically encrypt every message sent to a non-Proton address; use the password-protected option when you need that workflow.
- Using Gmail does not mean your data is unprotected; it means the protection model emphasizes provider-managed security and ecosystem features rather than universal end-to-end encryption.
Features, usability, and ecosystem trade-offs
Why Gmail remains compelling
Gmail’s main advantage is breadth. It operates inside a Google account ecosystem that many people already use for documents, calendars, cloud files, photos, meetings, and team workflows. A Gmail user can move between those services without creating a separate identity or learning a second provider’s system.
That integration matters for collaboration. Shared work, invitations, file access, and account administration are often easier when everyone already works in the same Google environment. Organizations that need centralized administration and broad compatibility may value this more than a provider-resistant encryption model.

Gmail also offers a large free-storage allowance by current comparison figures. TechRadar reported 15 GB of free Gmail storage in 2026. Confirm the allowance shown for your account before relying on it, because Google can change quotas or how storage is packaged.
Why Proton Mail appeals to privacy-first users
Proton’s design centers on encrypted storage and privacy-oriented communication. The service combines Mail with a broader Proton suite, and paid plans can add storage and other products. Password-protected messages to external recipients are built into the product’s privacy story rather than requiring a separate encryption system.
The trade-off is ecosystem breadth. If your daily work depends on Google’s integrated productivity tools, moving mail to Proton may introduce another account, another interface, and additional decisions about where files, calendars, and contacts live. Proton can be a strong choice for mail privacy even when you continue using other providers for collaboration.

Plan-dependent features
Do not assume that every feature appears on every Proton or Gmail plan. Storage, aliases, custom-domain support, bundled products, administrative controls, and limits can vary by edition and geography. Check the live plan documentation immediately before purchase, especially if you need a custom domain, multiple aliases, or a large mailbox.
Storage and price: compare the allocation, not only the headline
Gmail’s 15 GB comparison figure
TechRadar’s 2026 comparison lists 15 GB of free Gmail storage. Treat that as a current comparison figure rather than a permanent promise. Verify the quota in the Google account you will use, and check whether other Google services draw from the same storage pool for your account type.
Proton’s paid storage range
Proton’s own comparison materials indicate that paid plans add storage and products, with tiers reaching up to 1 TB depending on the plan. The same comparison says paid storage and products start at $3.99 per month in 2026. That is not a universal price: billing period, currency, country, taxes, promotions, and the selected bundle can change the amount.
When comparing Proton with Gmail, identify the mailbox allocation separately from any shared Proton storage or bundled services. A plan that advertises a large total may divide that capacity among Mail and other products. Compare the amount available for the work you actually intend to store.
Storage questions to answer before switching
- How many messages and attachments must be imported?
- Will photos, files, or other services consume storage from the same quota?
- Do you need a custom domain or multiple aliases?
- Is the advertised price monthly, annual, promotional, or tied to a bundle?
- What currency and tax treatment apply in your country?
- What happens to your data if you downgrade after importing a large archive?
Sending encrypted mail to people on the other service
Proton to a non-Proton recipient
Proton documents password-protected emails for non-Proton addresses. The recipient follows the provided message workflow and enters the password you communicate through a separate channel. This can protect message content from ordinary provider access during that workflow.

Use a password that is not included in the same email. For sensitive correspondence, send it through a different channel and confirm the recipient’s identity before sharing it.
Ordinary cross-provider email
A normal message sent from Gmail to Proton, or from Proton to Gmail, should not be described as automatically end-to-end encrypted across both providers. The message may be encrypted while traveling or while stored by each provider, but that is different from a system in which only the sender and recipient hold the decryption capability.

If the recipient cannot use Proton’s password-protected workflow, explain the limitation plainly and choose a different secure channel for highly sensitive material.
Switching from Gmail to Proton Mail
1. List your requirements before moving data
- Record the addresses, aliases, custom domains, contacts, and message folders you rely on.
- Estimate the size of your mailbox and the largest attachments.
- Decide which messages must remain searchable and which can be archived elsewhere.
- Identify Google services and shared workflows that still need to remain connected to your Gmail account.
2. Select a Proton plan only after checking the live terms
Match the plan to your mailbox size, aliases, custom-domain needs, and any bundled Proton products. Confirm the current storage allocation, billing period, currency, renewal price, and regional availability on Proton’s live plan page. Do not treat the $3.99 figure or the 1 TB upper tier as universal prices for every account.

Proton promotes Easy Switch for importing email and contacts. Start the import from your Proton account, authorize access to the Gmail data you want to transfer, and review the items selected before beginning. Large imports can take time, so keep the original Gmail account available until you have verified the result.
4. Verify the imported mailbox
- Search for several old messages by sender, date, and attachment.
- Open messages with large or unusual attachments.
- Check that contacts and important addresses transferred correctly.
- Send test messages to Proton, Gmail, and another provider.
- Confirm that replies arrive at the address people actually use.
5. Transition gradually
Keep Gmail active during a verification period rather than closing it immediately. Update account logins, newsletters, financial services, professional contacts, and recovery addresses in stages. Tell important correspondents which address should become primary, and monitor both inboxes for missed mail.
6. Test privacy workflows with real recipients
Send a normal message and a password-protected Proton message to a non-Proton contact. Confirm that the recipient understands the link-and-password process and that the password was delivered separately. This test prevents a last-minute surprise when you need to send sensitive information.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every Proton message is automatically end-to-end encrypted
Proton’s strongest encryption claims apply to its documented end-to-end and zero-access workflows. Ordinary mail exchanged with another provider is not automatically end-to-end encrypted across both systems. Use the password-protected option when the recipient is outside Proton.

Confidential mode can restrict actions in Gmail and set expiration dates, but it is not the same as end-to-end encryption. Use it for controlled sharing where its limits are acceptable, not as proof that the provider cannot access the message.

Comparing bundled storage as if it were mailbox-only storage
Proton may bundle Mail with other products, while Google accounts can involve multiple services. Compare the storage assigned to the services you will use, not just the largest number in an advertisement.
Ignoring operational metadata
Privacy-conscious users often focus exclusively on message text. Proton’s policy still describes account-activity records such as messages sent, storage used, total messages, and last login. Gmail’s personalization and Smart-feature controls also deserve review. Decide which operational data you are comfortable providing to either provider.
Closing Gmail before the migration is proven
Imports, contacts, filters, attachments, and account-recovery addresses can fail in different ways. Keep the old account accessible, test representative messages, and change important logins before deleting or abandoning anything.

Choose Proton Mail when privacy is the deciding factor
Select Proton if your primary objective is to limit provider access to stored message content, use encrypted workflows with external recipients, and accept a smaller ecosystem or a paid plan for advanced capacity and features. Review Proton’s policy and current plan terms so the service matches your expectations about metadata, storage, and location.
Choose Gmail when integration and collaboration are worth more
Select Gmail if your daily work depends on Google services, shared workflows, familiar productivity tools, and a generous free-storage allowance. Review personalization and Smart-feature settings, and remember that Gmail’s encryption at rest and in transit is not universal end-to-end encryption.
If you are undecided, run a measured trial
Keep Gmail as your working account, create a Proton account, import a representative set of messages and contacts with Easy Switch, and test both ordinary and password-protected messages. Compare the experience against the four issues that matter most: encryption and provider access, ecosystem and collaboration, storage and price, and migration, custom-domain, and alias requirements.
