Proton Mail can make everyday email more private, but it does not automatically encrypt every message end to end. Messages between Proton Mail users are end-to-end encrypted by default. Messages to other email providers need password-protected email or PGP for that protection; otherwise, they rely on TLS in transit when the recipient’s server supports it. Proton’s free plan has the same security level as its paid plans, while paid plans add capacity and convenience features.
How secure is Proton Mail?
Proton describes its service as using open-source, independently audited cryptography and a zero-access architecture. In plain terms, zero-access encryption is designed to prevent Proton from reading stored message content in its systems. It is not the same as end-to-end encryption: that protection depends on how a message is sent and who can access it before it reaches Proton.
Proton says emails sent between Proton Mail users are always end-to-end encrypted. The message is encrypted so that only the intended recipient can decrypt and read it. For messages involving someone outside Proton Mail, the protection depends on the method used.

Proton lists PhishGuard, DMARC protection, and link confirmation among its anti-phishing measures, but suspicious messages can still require your judgment. What is encrypted within Proton Mail?
| Message or information | How Proton describes its protection |
|---|---|
| Messages between Proton Mail users | End-to-end encrypted automatically. |
| Outgoing message to a non-Proton address, sent with password protection | End-to-end encrypted; the recipient needs the password to open it. |
| Outgoing message to a non-Proton address, without password protection or PGP | Protected by TLS in transit only if the recipient’s mail server supports it. The external provider may be able to read and retain the message. |
| Incoming message from an external provider without PGP | Encrypted in transit using TLS and stored by Proton with zero-access encryption, but not end-to-end encrypted. The sender’s provider may still have access to its copy. |
| Subject lines and sender/recipient addresses | Encrypted, but not end-to-end encrypted. |
These distinctions matter when the message itself must remain private from email providers. TLS protects a message while it travels between servers; it does not prevent a provider that handles the message from accessing it. Zero-access encryption applies to Proton’s stored copy of incoming external mail, but does not erase access that the sender’s provider may have or turn the original delivery into end-to-end encryption. Can you send encrypted email to someone who doesn’t use Proton Mail?
Yes. For a recipient who does not use Proton Mail, you can send a password-protected email. Proton says this feature is available on all plans, including Free. The recipient opens the message with the password you provide separately; the message expires after 28 days by default, and 28 days is the maximum expiration period. Alternatively, PGP can provide end-to-end encryption when it is set up and used by both sides. Without password protection or PGP, an external message is not automatically end-to-end encrypted. It uses TLS only if the recipient’s mail server supports it, and that provider may be able to read and retain the message. For sensitive communication, choose an end-to-end method rather than assuming ordinary email is private.

Proton says its Free plan provides the same security level as paid plans. A subscription chiefly adds more capacity, organization options, and integration features; it does not make the free plan’s core security level lower.

How to reduce phishing and login risks
Encryption does not tell you whether a message, link, or attachment is trustworthy. Proton recommends these habits:
- Log in only through official Proton sites or apps; do not follow a login link in an unexpected message.
- Check that messages claiming to come from Proton carry the Official badge. Older legitimate messages may still show a star instead.
- Do not click suspicious links or download unexpected attachments. Proton’s link confirmation feature is an additional prompt, not a reason to ignore warning signs.
- Report suspicious mail through Proton rather than replying or using its links. When submitting a phishing report, Proton can be authorized to analyze the message and its headers.
See Proton’s explanation of the Official badge and its phishing-report instructions.
What to know before setting up a custom domain
Proton requires a paid plan for custom domains. Setup involves proving you control the domain and adding the DNS records Proton specifies at your registrar. If you use a non-Proton server as the primary MX server in a special routing configuration, Proton documents an encryption exception. Understand how that affects encryption before changing the configuration. Proton’s custom-domain encryption settings
