Protocol Zero is a long-form Minecraft zombie-apocalypse modpack for players who want stealth, infection management, difficult exploration, and base-building that cannot rely on ordinary walls. For a new installation, start with the 1.20.1 Forge branch shown as [PHAY] Zombie Protocol Zero – A Modern Zombie Apocalypse-0.3.0(hotfix), uploaded October 13, 2026. The separate [SPORE] 1.20.1 Forge branch is a valid alternative, while the listed 1.21.1 NeoForge 1.9.2 (UPDATE) file should be treated as an older or separately maintained branch. Match the exact Minecraft version, loader, and pack file in your launcher and on your server.

Protocol Zero is not simply a collection of stronger zombies. Its design combines a ruined-world setting, quests and lore, food and nutrition, thirst, infection systems, raids, periodic hordes, and hostile mobs that can detect and pursue you in ways that make conventional Minecraft defenses unreliable.

What the modpack is designed to do

The official description places you in a decayed world where civilizations are struggling to survive and your objective is to explore for a cure. Destroyed cities, decayed houses, and occasional villagers’ outposts replace the dependable rhythm of normal village-to-village progression. Biomes and structures are overhauled, and structures are not densely or predictably placed, so a safe route, a food source, and a defensible overnight position are all decisions rather than guarantees.

A complete quest system and lore cover the core mods. That gives the pack a longer arc than a standard “survive the first night” challenge: exploration is tied to discovering what happened and progressing toward a cure. The listing does not publish a complete quest-by-quest walkthrough, so objectives, rewards, and progression should be read in your installed version rather than assumed from another branch.

Which Protocol Zero branch should you install?

Branch/file Minecraft Loader Infection identity Status and best use
[PHAY] Zombie Protocol Zero – A Modern Zombie Apocalypse-0.3.0(hotfix) 1.20.1 Forge Phayriosis branch The current main 1.20.1 file shown; uploaded October 13, 2026. Best default for a new 1.20.1 Forge instance.
[SPORE] Protocol Zero A Modern Zombie Apocalypse-2.0.9(hotfix) 1.20.1 Forge Spore/Sporeinqui branch A distinct 1.20.1 Forge branch. Choose it when you specifically want that infection line or need compatibility with an existing SPORE world.
Protocol Zero 1.9.2 (UPDATE) 1.21.1 NeoForge Branch-specific infection setup The files index still lists it, but the project page says the NeoForge version was abandoned in favor of two Forge versions. Treat it as older or separately maintained and verify its files before installing.

The PHAY and SPORE names correspond to different infection branches described by the creator as Phayriosis and Spore/Sporeinqui. The available information does not establish that their balance, disease progression, quests, or endgame are identical. Do not move a world between branches and expect the same infection behavior.

Use PHAY when

  • You are creating a new world on Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge.
  • You want the file currently displayed as the main 1.20.1 release.
  • You do not have a reason to target the SPORE infection branch.

Use SPORE when

  • You are joining a server or group that already selected the SPORE file.
  • You specifically want the Spore/Sporeinqui infection branch.
  • Your existing world and configuration were built for SPORE 2.0.9(hotfix).

Use the 1.21.1 NeoForge file only after checking the files page

The project’s own descriptions conflict: one says NeoForge was abandoned, while the current files index still lists a 1.21.1 NeoForge release. That does not prove the file is broken; it means its maintenance status is unclear. Confirm the file’s loader, dependencies, update notes, and server availability immediately before creating a world. Never install the NeoForge file into a Forge 1.20.1 profile.

How to install Protocol Zero in a launcher

Launcher labels change between versions, but the required choices do not: the Minecraft version, mod loader, and pack branch must agree. These steps describe the safe order for a CurseForge installation.

  1. Open the Minecraft area of the CurseForge app and search for Protocol Zero by leo_san. Confirm that the result is the intended project rather than a similarly named pack.
  2. Open the project’s Files list and identify the exact file you intend to use: PHAY 0.3.0(hotfix), SPORE 2.0.9(hotfix), or the 1.21.1 NeoForge 1.9.2 (UPDATE) file.
  3. Create or install a profile using the Minecraft version printed on that file. Select Forge for PHAY and SPORE; select NeoForge only for the 1.21.1 NeoForge file.
  4. Let the launcher install the modpack and its listed dependencies. Do not add a different loader manually after the profile is created.
  5. Open the profile’s version or mod list and check that the Minecraft version and loader match the file page. A 1.20.1 Forge profile is not interchangeable with a 1.21.1 NeoForge profile.
  6. Launch once and stop at the title screen before adding optional shaders, resource packs, or extra gameplay mods. This gives you a clean baseline for diagnosing a loader or dependency error.
  7. Create a new world for the selected branch. Infection systems, quests, structures, and balance can differ between branches; changing branches on an established save is not a supported way to test them.
  8. Keep a copy of the profile and world directory before updating. A hotfix or branch change can alter registries, quests, or infected entities in ways that are not reversible by simply selecting an older file.

Setting up a multiplayer server

The official project description says Protocol Zero can be played on servers. That confirms multiplayer support, but it does not publish a universal RAM requirement, a measured player count, or a guaranteed FPS or tick-rate target. Server capacity depends on the selected branch, view and simulation distances, world generation, number of players, and the host machine.

Make the client and server identical

  1. Choose one branch first. Record its Minecraft version, loader, file name, and hotfix number.
  2. Install the matching server files for that branch, following the server package or installation instructions supplied with the file. The project information does not provide a single complete server-pack matrix for every branch, so verify the files page rather than assuming that a client profile is itself a server package.
  3. Copy the same modpack version and configuration to every player. A player on PHAY cannot reliably join a SPORE server, even though both target Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge.
  4. Start the server once, accept the Minecraft EULA in the server’s own configuration, and stop it cleanly before changing settings. Then start it again and test with one player before inviting a group.
  5. Keep the server loader exactly aligned with the client loader. Forge and NeoForge are separate choices; installing one on the server and the other on clients will produce a connection or mod-list mismatch.
  6. Back up the world before updating the pack. This is especially important when changing infection branches or moving between hotfix releases.

Multiplayer decisions that matter

  • Shared infection plan: Decide who carries food, water, medical supplies, and exploration equipment. Thirst and nutrition make an uncoordinated expedition fail faster than in ordinary survival.
  • Base roles: Assign a builder to reinforce and seal the base, an explorer to map routes and structures, and a supply runner to maintain food and water. The pack’s tracking and digging behavior means a base cannot be treated as a decorative house.
  • Update discipline: All players should update at the same time and retain the previous server backup. A client-only update can leave players with mismatched quests, entities, or infection content.

How survival systems change your priorities

Food, nutrition, and thirst

Protocol Zero adds food and nutrition management plus thirst. The practical consequence is that a stack of any single food is not a complete preparation plan. Carry several food options, reserve supplies for the return trip, and treat water as a route-planning constraint. Because the listing does not provide exact saturation, hydration, or disease values, use the in-game tooltips and the installed branch’s quest guidance for numerical decisions.

Infection and disease branches

Infection is central to the pack. The creator describes Spore/Sporeinqui and Phayriosis branches, with parasites and other infections spreading to take over the world. The branch you install changes the infection experience; the available project information does not establish identical spread rates, symptoms, cures, progression gates, or balance between PHAY and SPORE.

Plan around infection before you know every mechanic. Separate contaminated or unknown supplies from your main storage, avoid taking unnecessary risks while wounded, and record which items, mobs, and quest steps are associated with symptoms in your version. Do not rely on advice written for the other branch: a cure path or exposure rule shown in a SPORE playthrough may not apply to PHAY.

Raids, events, and hordes

Difficulty is custom tuned through increased mob health, raids, and events. Hordes attack periodically, so a quiet base can become a sudden combat problem. Keep an escape route, a fallback room, and spare tools outside your primary entrance. A single stockpile at the front door is vulnerable to both a raid and a failed retreat.

Why ordinary walls are not enough

The creator states that zombies can hear and smell players, track them using blood scent, and dig through blocks to reach them. In the creator’s words, “They can hear you smell you and path track to find you via blood scent.” That makes sound, wounds, and the shape of your base strategic concerns rather than cosmetic details.

Build for detection and pursuit

  • Use layers: Put distance, a perimeter, and an inner room between your bed and the outside world. A single wall is not a complete defense when mobs can dig.
  • Control entrances: Keep a primary entrance for routine use and a concealed or elevated escape route for a breach. Avoid layouts that force every player through one corridor.
  • Leave working space: Store building blocks, tools, and food where you can reach them during an attack. Do not bury every repair item behind the same wall you are trying to defend.
  • Manage blood and exposure: When the pack’s infection or injury mechanics leave you vulnerable, return by a planned route and avoid leading pursuers directly to storage and sleeping areas.
  • Expect vertical problems: Digging behavior means an underground room is not automatically safe. Reinforce ceilings, floors, and approaches instead of protecting only the visible front wall.

Stealth and route planning

Because zombies can hear, smell, and path-track, stealth is more valuable than simply carrying stronger weapons. Choose travel times and routes that limit exposure, avoid unnecessary fights near your base, and use outposts or cleared structures as temporary waypoints. The world’s sparse and unpredictable structures make navigation a resource problem: map reliable food, water, shelter, and escape locations instead of assuming the next building will provide them.

Exploration, cities, and the search for a cure

Destroyed cities and decayed houses provide the atmosphere and the risk. Villagers’ outposts appear occasionally rather than as a predictable chain of safe hubs. Overhauled biomes and less predictable structure placement reward players who explore with a return plan.

  1. Leave a marked route from the base before entering a city or unfamiliar biome.
  2. Carry enough food and water for delays, not just the shortest estimated walk.
  3. Scout from cover and identify a retreat point before opening containers or starting a fight.
  4. Record useful structures and supplies on a map or shared server notes so later expeditions do not repeat the same danger.
  5. Return before your supplies are empty. The pack’s tracking, hordes, and infection systems make an exhausted return trip more dangerous than turning around early.

The quest and lore systems are intended to connect these expeditions to the cure objective. Read quest text in your selected branch and follow its stated requirements; no complete public quest sequence is supplied that can safely be applied across PHAY, SPORE, and NeoForge.

Performance and rendering expectations

The project’s performance section says rendering and FPS issues were fixed. That is useful evidence that known problems were addressed in the published pack, but it is not a promise of a particular frame rate on every computer. No minimum RAM figure, universal hardware requirement, or measured FPS target is published.

Start with a clean performance baseline

  1. Launch the unmodified profile first. Do not diagnose the pack while shaders, high-resolution resource packs, or unrelated mods are enabled.
  2. Lower view distance and simulation distance if cities, hordes, or new terrain cause stutter. Change one setting at a time so you can identify the improvement.
  3. Close background applications and watch whether the problem is a sustained slowdown, a brief world-generation hitch, or a server tick-rate issue. They require different fixes.
  4. Use the same branch and file on the client and server. A mismatch can look like a performance problem when it is actually a connection or entity error.
  5. Keep backups before changing configuration files. If a setting or optional add-on makes the game unstable, restore the clean profile rather than layering more changes onto it.

Common installation and gameplay problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
The launcher reports an incompatible loader or mod list The profile uses Forge when the file requires NeoForge, or the Minecraft version is wrong. Match the loader and Minecraft version printed on the selected file. PHAY and SPORE are 1.20.1 Forge; the listed UPDATE file is 1.21.1 NeoForge.
A player cannot join the server Client and server use different branches, hotfix numbers, or configurations. Compare the full file name, Minecraft version, loader, and installed mods on both sides.
A world behaves differently after changing files The save was moved between infection branches or releases. Restore the pre-update backup and continue with the original branch. Treat PHAY and SPORE as distinct experiences.
Zombies reach a supposedly secure room The base relied on a single wall or ignored digging and tracking. Add layered barriers, a fallback route, and protection for floors and ceilings; reduce noise and avoid bringing pursuit directly home.
Exploration ends in dehydration or starvation Food, nutrition, and thirst were planned like vanilla survival. Carry varied food and water, reserve return supplies, and use the branch’s in-game tooltips for exact values.
Frame rate drops in cities or during hordes World generation, entities, or visual settings exceed the computer or server’s current capacity. Test the clean profile, reduce view and simulation distance, and separate client FPS symptoms from server tick-rate symptoms.

Is Protocol Zero a good fit for you?

Choose it if you want a campaign-like survival experience in which exploration has a cure objective, food and thirst remain relevant, and the enemy can detect or breach a base. It is a poor fit if you want a predictable village start, a purely decorative base, or a zombie pack that can be solved by placing one thick wall.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The strongest reason to select Protocol Zero over a simpler zombie scenario is the interaction between stealth, route planning, infection, and base design. You must decide not only how to kill a mob, but whether the fight will expose your route, leave you wounded, draw a horde, or bring blood scent back to your shelter.

Final branch recommendation

For a fresh installation on October 15, 2026, use the 1.20.1 Forge PHAY file shown as the current main release, provided your group is not already committed to SPORE. Select SPORE 2.0.9(hotfix) when its infection branch or an existing server requires it. Treat the 1.21.1 NeoForge 1.9.2 (UPDATE) file as an older or separately maintained option and verify its current files and server instructions before use. Whichever branch you choose, copy the exact same file and loader to every client and server, begin a new backed-up world, and build as though zombies can hear, smell, track, and dig their way to you.
