I can’t recommend cameras intended to secretly record people. Covert recording can violate privacy and cause serious harm, and the available official guidance does not establish a legitimate use for buying such devices. If your concern is safety, focus instead on securing cameras and phones you own or control, and use the reporting options below if intimate images are shared without consent.
Why covert recording is a privacy risk
A camera’s small size or connection to an Android phone does not make recording someone without their knowledge or consent harmless. Consent to having an intimate image taken is not consent to sharing it, according to the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women. The same basic privacy concern applies to recording people in private settings without permission. Laws differ by location and situation, so this article is not legal advice; seek local legal guidance if you need to understand what is lawful where you are.
Misuse of connected cameras has led to documented harm. In a 2023 consumer alert about Ring, the Federal Trade Commission described employees and hackers accessing customers’ private videos and reported a $5.8 million settlement payment. The case is a reminder that camera privacy depends not only on where a device is placed, but also on who can access its account and footage. Secure a home camera you own
If you want to monitor your own home with the knowledge and permission of people who may be recorded, the FTC recommends reducing account, network, and remote-access risks. Check the camera maker’s current instructions for the exact settings available on your model.

- Use a strong, unique password. Do not reuse a password from another account.
- Turn on two-factor authentication if the camera account offers it.
- Enable encryption where the manufacturer makes it available.
- Install software and firmware updates when released.
- Secure your Wi-Fi network with a strong password and current security settings.
- Limit remote viewing to people and devices that genuinely need access; disable it if you do not use it.

If you suspect someone is monitoring your Android phone
Stalkerware can be difficult to spot and may be disguised as an ordinary app. The FTC cautions that taking action on a phone may alert the person monitoring it. If you think a partner or another person may be tracking you, prioritize your safety: consider using a safer device to seek help before changing settings, removing apps, or resetting the phone.

If intimate images are shared without consent
Consent to taking an intimate image does not mean consent to distributing it. If an intimate image of you is shared without permission, the FTC says covered platforms must provide a process for requesting removal and remove covered images and known identical copies within 48 hours after a request under the Take It Down Act. This deadline applies to covered platforms and images within the law’s scope; it is not a guarantee about every site, every kind of content, or every jurisdiction.
