Protecting a cloud-native application from ransomware means more than backing up its data. Build layered controls around identities, cloud and cluster management, APIs, workloads, and data; keep recovery copies beyond the reach of production credentials; and rehearse restoring the whole service into a clean environment. A backup is useful only if you can identify a trustworthy copy, access and decrypt it, and rebuild the dependencies the application needs.

How do I protect cloud-native applications from ransomware?

Treat ransomware as a risk to the entire service and its recovery path—not just to files in a database. An incident can affect identities, cloud control planes, clusters, build systems, storage, logging, and backup administration. NIST’s final IR 8374 Revision 1, published June 11, 2026, uses the Cybersecurity Framework 2.0 to organize ransomware outcomes across governance, identification, protection, detection, response, and recovery.

Start by mapping the service and agreeing on what recovery must achieve. Then reduce the chance that an attacker can make destructive changes, detect suspicious activity, and preserve a recovery path that remains usable even if production is compromised.

  • Cloud accounts and management planes, clusters, workloads, virtual machines, and storage.
  • Databases, object stores, APIs, and service-to-service communication.
  • Identity providers, privileged identities, service accounts, secrets, and vendor access.
  • Source code, CI/CD systems, build definitions, container and VM images, and infrastructure-as-code (IaC).
  • DNS, certificates, network configuration, required licenses, and third-party dependencies.

Map dependencies to business services and identify which services or datasets must be restored first, based on health and safety, revenue, or mission needs. CISA’s #StopRansomware Guide recommends identifying critical assets and interdependencies to support restoration priorities.

Set recovery objectives before choosing a backup or recovery architecture: acceptable data loss, target restoration time, required dependencies, evidence-retention needs, and who may authorize recovery. These objectives depend on the organization’s requirements; the cited guidance does not set universal recovery-point or recovery-time targets.

Reduce opportunities for destructive access

Apply least privilege to people, workloads, automation, and vendors. Separate administrative duties, secure remote access, use strong authentication and appropriate multifactor authentication, patch exposed systems, and review cloud identities and service accounts. Understand which security responsibilities belong to your organization and which belong to a cloud provider. CISA’s guide also recommends logging and alerts for abnormal usage, cloud service control policies, and limiting third-party access.

Protect the cloud and cluster management paths as well as the application. Restrict who can change deployments, storage, backup policies, or logging. Where feasible, use organization-level policies to limit destructive actions such as deleting logs or changing logging configuration. Protect source repositories and build pipelines, control deployment permissions, and review or sign artifacts where appropriate.

Do not treat APIs and internal service communication as one control surface. NIST’s March 2026 update to SP 800-228 addresses API risks and controls across development and runtime, with a risk-based approach to implementation. NIST’s IR 8505 discusses data protection in transit in service-mesh, multi-cloud, and hybrid environments. These measures complement recovery planning; they do not replace tested backups.

How should I back up Kubernetes and cloud-native applications?

Back up the application’s data and the materials needed to reconstruct its operating environment. For a Kubernetes-based service, that means considering the data stores and object storage it uses alongside deployment manifests, images, configuration, secrets or documented secret-reissuance procedures, identity dependencies, network settings, and external services. A cluster or workload copy alone may not contain everything needed to make the service trustworthy and usable again.

Cover data, configuration, and rebuild materials

  • Application data: databases, object stores, and other persistent data on which the service depends.
  • Application and infrastructure definitions: deployment manifests, IaC templates, source code, build definitions, and required executables or images.
  • Configuration and access dependencies: DNS and network configuration, certificates, identity recovery procedures, and secrets or steps to reissue them.
  • Evidence and recovery records: logs and records needed to investigate changes and determine which data is safe to restore.

CISA recommends golden images, offline backups of IaC templates, and offline copies of source code or executables. Keep IaC version-controlled and audit changes so you can distinguish trusted definitions from unauthorized alterations.

Keep recovery copies separate from production

Maintain multiple copies of critical data and recovery materials. Encrypt backup data and keep copies offline or in a separate, access-controlled account or environment. Design recovery access so ordinary production credentials cannot also alter or erase every copy; separate backup administration from restoration approval.

Possible approaches include offline media, cloud-to-cloud copies, and immutable or object-locked cloud storage. They have different operational dependencies, costs, and failure modes. A second provider may reduce dependence on one provider if its accounts are affected, but it also adds complexity, transfer requirements, and recovery dependencies. Choose separation that the organization can operate and test.

Are immutable backups enough to protect against ransomware?

No. Immutability can make deletion or overwrite harder during a retention period, but it does not prove that a backup is complete, clean, accessible, decryptable, compliant, or restorable. A copy can preserve corrupted or already-compromised data just as reliably as clean data.

CISA discusses immutable storage, version control, deletion protection, and cloud-to-cloud backups in its #StopRansomware Guide, while cautioning that immutable cloud storage can introduce misconfiguration costs and compliance considerations. Test the actual controls: who can change retention, who can retrieve and decrypt a copy, how a clean restore point is selected, and whether the complete service can be rebuilt.

Compare recovery architectures by their real protections and dependencies, not by the label “immutable.” CISA and partner agencies also discuss physically separate, segmented recovery locations in the #StopRansomware: Play Ransomware advisory; a particular storage medium by itself does not make a recovery plan resilient.

How do I detect suspicious changes and identify a clean restore point?

Enable and retain logs for cloud accounts, identity, control planes, clusters, storage, databases, applications, and backup administration. Alert on anomalous access, privilege changes, mass file or object changes, attempts to delete backups, logging changes, and unusual data transfers. Establish a baseline for normal activity, and ensure monitoring can still access relevant logs if production accounts are compromised. CISA recommends resource logging, alerts for abnormal usage, and cloud-volume snapshots that can support forensic review.

A successful backup job is not evidence that its contents are safe to restore. During investigation, determine what changed, when and by whom, what other events occurred, and the resulting impact. NIST’s SP 1800-11 describes a data-integrity approach to correlating those events and finding a backup version free of corrupted data. Its practice guide presents an example solution in a laboratory environment, so use its methods as an approach to adapt rather than as a universal cloud-native architecture or guarantee.

How do I recover cloud data and services after a ransomware attack?

Recovery is a controlled rebuild, not just a file restore. Coordinate isolation and communications, preserve useful evidence where practical, select a known-clean recovery point, and restore services in the order set by business priorities. Rebuild from trusted images and templates, then reconnect only systems assessed as clean. CISA recommends restoring from offline, encrypted backups according to critical-service priority and avoiding reinfection.

Rehearse the complete restoration path

Run restoration exercises on a schedule and after material changes to the service or its recovery setup. CISA recommends regularly testing backup availability and integrity in disaster-recovery scenarios. A useful exercise verifies that the emergency process works from start to finish:

  1. Access recovery copies using the emergency identities and procedures—not ordinary production credentials.
  2. Verify that selected copies can be retrieved and decrypted, and assess whether they predate the compromise.
  3. Restore data and rebuild into a clean environment using trusted images, IaC, deployment definitions, and configuration.
  4. Restore required dependencies such as identity, DNS, certificates, networking, secrets, and databases.
  5. Validate service operation and security before reconnecting it to users or other systems.
  6. Record actual restoration time and data loss, compare them with the organization’s objectives, and resolve gaps.

Maintain incident-response and communications plans alongside the technical runbook. During a real incident, avoid recovery actions that unnecessarily destroy forensic artifacts; after the event, document lessons and update the plan.

How should I compare ransomware recovery options?

Compare the entire recovery process, including the controls that protect copies, the evidence used to select a clean point, and the dependencies required to restore. A feature list or successful scheduled backup is weaker evidence than a completed restore exercise.

Approach What it can contribute Trade-offs or checks
Offline or removable copies Separates copies from continuously connected production systems. Protect encryption keys and physical access; confirm coverage, retention, and that restoration has been tested.
Cloud-to-cloud copies Provides another copy in a separate cloud environment. Check account and identity separation, transfer and recovery dependencies, operating complexity, and cost.
Immutable or object-locked storage Can resist deletion or overwrite during configured retention. Validate retention configuration, authorized changes, access, compliance fit, cost, and clean-point selection.
Replication Can maintain data in another location for service continuity. Replication alone does not establish that a copy predates compromise or contains trustworthy data; include a recovery and integrity test.
Golden images and version-controlled infrastructure Can support rebuilding systems and services from known definitions. Protect and audit images, source, IaC, and build materials; test their use together with data restoration.

For any option, assess isolation from production identities, accounts, networks, and administrators; encryption and key recovery; coverage of data and service dependencies; evidence and audit support; portability; achievable recovery time and data loss; retention and regulatory fit; and storage, transfer, and operational costs. Base the decision on observed exercises and the organization’s requirements rather than assuming one architecture fits every service.
