UIDAI felicitated Protean eGov Technologies Limited on 14 October 2026 for innovative applications built around Aadhaar Face Authentication, Aadhaar Status Check and other UIDAI initiatives. The recognition was presented at Aadhaar Samvaad during the 17th Aadhaar Day, highlighting enterprise uses of Aadhaar infrastructure for authentication, onboarding, compliance and risk monitoring.
What UIDAI recognized
Protean was recognized for applying UIDAI capabilities to practical institutional workflows rather than for a consumer device or standalone app. The named applications are:
- Aadhaar Face Authentication: facial biometrics through the Aadhaar ecosystem, designed to support faster identity checks in digital journeys.
- Aadhaar Status Check: a status-notification capability that can provide eligible institutions with updates about specified changes in an Aadhaar record, subject to UIDAI’s applicable framework.
- Other UIDAI initiatives: the felicitation also covered Protean’s broader work using authorized Aadhaar services.
The event formed part of Aadhaar Samvaad and the 17th Aadhaar Day. It should not be confused with UIDAI’s own Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Public Administration, which UIDAI’s in-house AI/ML Aadhaar Face Authentication solution received in the Innovation category on 21 April 2025.

How Protean’s Face Authentication application works
Face Authentication uses a person’s facial image as the biometric input for an Aadhaar authentication transaction. In an institutional digital journey, an organization can invoke the authorized service, capture the required facial input through a compatible application, and receive an authentication result through the Aadhaar ecosystem. The approach can reduce dependence on manual checks or a physical fingerprint device in situations where a fast, remote interaction is useful.

Face Authentication does not eliminate the need for lawful purpose, user consent, secure handling of personal data, an approved integration and any safeguards required by UIDAI or the institution’s sectoral regulator. The announcement describes an enterprise capability; it does not imply that consumers need to buy special hardware.
How Aadhaar Status Check supports risk and compliance teams
Aadhaar Status Check uses UIDAI’s applicable status-notification framework to send eligible institutions updates about specified Aadhaar-status changes. Protean says those updates can be connected to verification, compliance and risk-management processes.

Potential workflow
- An institution maintains an Aadhaar-linked customer or beneficiary record under an authorized use case.
- A qualifying status change is reported through the permitted notification mechanism.
- The institution’s verification or compliance system receives and records the update.
- Rules can trigger a review, a request for refreshed information, enhanced due diligence or another permitted control.
Protean specifically links this capability to identifying possible mule accounts. A status signal is not, by itself, proof of fraud: it is an input that a bank, payment provider or other eligible organization can combine with transaction behavior, account history and its own controls.
Protean’s role in India’s Aadhaar infrastructure
Protean’s FY2024-25 Integrated Annual Report says the company is authorized by UIDAI as an Authentication Service Agency (ASA), Authentication User Agency (AUA), KYC Service Agency (KSA) and KYC User Agency (KUA). These roles cover different responsibilities for connecting institutions to Aadhaar authentication and e-KYC services.

The same report says more than 45 organizations use Protean’s Aadhaar authentication and e-KYC services. The customers cited span central and state governments, banks, payment banks, public-sector undertakings and insurance companies. Protean also reports more than 99% uptime over the last three fiscals for its identity-services operation.

Why the recognition matters at national scale
Aadhaar authentication operates at a scale few identity systems match. UIDAI and the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology reported 2,707 crore authentication transactions in FY2024-25, including 246.75 crore in March 2025 alone. The April 2025 release recorded more than 14,800 crore cumulative authentication transactions since Aadhaar authentication began. UIDAI also reported 44.63 crore e-KYC transactions in March 2025.

Those figures are national UIDAI totals, not Protean’s own volume. Protean’s Aadhaar Authentication page uses separate company-service counters, displaying more than 2 billion authentication transactions and more than 950 million e-KYC transactions. The two sets of numbers measure different scopes and should not be substituted for one another.
The scale explains the practical importance of reliability, authorization and fraud controls. An authentication failure, delayed status signal or poorly governed integration can affect large numbers of people and institutions. Recognition from UIDAI therefore signals alignment with an ecosystem where availability, compliance and responsible handling are as important as new features.

Related expansion of Protean’s UIDAI work
In August 2025, Protean announced a UIDAI mandate to establish and operate Aadhaar Seva Kendras across 188 districts. The mandate includes manpower, infrastructure and hardware deployment. That physical-service work complements, but is distinct from, the digital Face Authentication and Status Check applications recognized in October 2026.
What institutions should evaluate before adoption
- Authorization: confirm that the proposed use case, agency arrangement and data flows are covered by current UIDAI permissions.
- Authentication choice: decide whether face, fingerprint, iris, OTP or another permitted method best fits the users, devices and environment.
- Integration: review API or managed-service interfaces, latency, fallback handling, logging and incident response.
- Governance: document consent, purpose limitation, retention, access controls and escalation procedures for disputed results.
- Risk controls: treat status notifications as signals for investigation, not automatic evidence that an account is fraudulent.
- Service resilience: examine measured availability, capacity for peak onboarding and continuity plans for outages.
For citizens, the immediate takeaway is that the announcement concerns institutional infrastructure. It does not announce a new Aadhaar card, a consumer subscription or a requirement to purchase equipment.
