Spoilers for Prologue to Tau and the connected Tau setup: the quest ends after the Vessel delivers its gathered material to Praghasa, the Sentient mothership intended to enable the Tenno’s crossing to Tau. It is a permanent Codex quest, but it deliberately stops before the expedition itself begins.
The short answer
Prologue to Tau is a story bridge into Warframe’s planned Tau journey, not the Tau expedition itself. Digital Extremes added it to the Codex on October 15, 2026, as a permanent quest connected to that future journey. To begin, you must complete The Hex and The Old Peace, then select the Prologue Quest/Chapters entry in the Orbiter Codex.
The route moves from the Sanctum Anatomica’s Dark Refractory to a memory sequence, then to Kronia Relay and finally to the Eris Dermacrust node. The player-controlled Vessel gathers material from defeated enemies on Eris. At the end, it offers that material to Praghasa. The handoff confirms the Vessel’s practical job in preparing the crossing, while the actual arrival in Tau remains for later content.
Spoiler scope and what this quest is—and is not
This article covers the complete ending and the lore implications of the Tau setup. It also separates the quest from Epoch Operation: Taubound, because the two pieces of content are related but not interchangeable.

Prologue to Tau is a permanent addition to the Warframe Codex. Digital Extremes says it remains available after the limited operation ends and can be completed at your leisure. It is therefore a quest you can start later and replay, rather than a timed activity that disappears with the event.
Epoch Operation: Taubound is the limited operation. Its event rewards and daily dialogue are separate from the quest, and they are not required to treat the prologue’s ending as complete. The operation’s stated end date is November 17, 2026; that date does not remove the Codex quest.
How to start Prologue to Tau
Meet both story requirements
The unlock is gated by two completed quests:
- The Hex
- The Old Peace
Both must be complete before the Codex entry becomes available. The requirement is story-based, so collecting event resources or participating in Taubound does not substitute for either prerequisite.
Recommended Free Tools
Use the Orbiter Codex
- Return to your Orbiter.
- Open the Codex.
- Select the Prologue Quest/Chapters entry.
- Launch Prologue to Tau from that entry.
The quest is not started from the Taubound operation interface. If you have completed both prerequisites but do not see it, check the Codex’s Prologue Quest/Chapters category rather than the event screen.
Starting after the operation
Because the quest is permanent, you can begin it after Taubound’s November 17, 2026 end date. The operation’s limited availability affects its own activities, rewards and daily conversations; it does not impose a deadline on the prologue.
Quest route: every story stop in order
1. Dark Refractory, Sanctum Anatomica
The documented route starts in the Sanctum Anatomica’s Dark Refractory. The Operator and Drifter speak there, establishing the immediate reason for the mission and framing the transition toward Tau as a joint effort between the two versions of the player character.

This opening is a conversation scene, not an Eris farming step. Let the dialogue finish before looking for a mission node; the quest first sends you through a memory sequence.

2. The memory sequence
The next segment is presented as a memory. Its function is contextual: it connects the current preparation to the characters’ history instead of treating Tau as an unrelated destination. The memory is part of the quest route, so it is not an optional lore vignette that can be skipped while still following the intended sequence.
3. Preparing a Vessel at Kronia Relay
After the memory, the route moves to Kronia Relay. Here the objective is to prepare a Vessel. This is the first point at which the Vessel becomes an explicit player-controlled story element rather than an abstract reference in the Tau plan.
The relay section establishes the logistical problem: reaching Tau requires more than choosing a destination on the Star Chart. A suitable Vessel and enough energy or fuel must be prepared before Praghasa can perform its part.
4. Eris Dermacrust
The final mission segment uses the Eris Dermacrust node. You defeat enemies there to provide material for Praghasa. Digital Extremes’ event description identifies the Eris resource as Moonflesh and describes it as fuel for the crossing, so the combat has a narrative purpose as well as its normal mission loop.

What happens at the ending
The Vessel delivers what it gathered
After the Vessel sequence, the Vessel offers its gathered material to Praghasa. This is the final action of the prologue. The exchange confirms that the Vessel has completed the immediate collection task and that Praghasa is the intended recipient and user of the material.
The quest stops before Tau
There is no Tau landing, Tau mission, or resolution of the expedition in this quest. The ending is a setup beat: the resources and machinery for a crossing are being assembled, but the crossing itself has not happened on screen. Treating the handoff as a completed trip creates a larger spoiler misunderstanding, because the quest intentionally leaves that next stage open.
In practical terms, the ending answers “What was the Eris mission for?” It was to supply Praghasa with what it needs. It does not answer “What will the Tenno find after arriving in Tau?” That question is deferred to future content.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat the Vessel is doing
A player-controlled participant in the preparation
The Vessel is introduced in an active story role. It is not merely a vehicle name or a background object: the player controls it during the relevant sequence, and its actions directly produce the material handed to Praghasa.
Its job in this prologue is therefore operational. The Vessel travels through the required sequence, gathers the material obtained on Eris and presents it to the mothership. The quest does not establish that the Vessel alone can open the Tau route, nor does it show the Vessel arriving there. It establishes the Vessel as the agent that helps make the crossing possible.
Why the Vessel matters to the lore
Earlier Tau references can sound like a distant strategic objective. The Vessel gives that objective a concrete process: prepare a form capable of carrying out the collection work, obtain fuel or energy, and transfer it to the system intended to make the journey. That turns the Tau plan from exposition into an unfolding operation.

The prologue also places the Operator and Drifter in the same narrative movement. Their conversation in the Dark Refractory, followed by the Vessel’s mission, links personal memory with the larger logistical effort without claiming that the historical conflict has already been resolved.

Praghasa as the Tau-bound mothership
Praghasa is presented as the Sentient mothership intended to take the Tenno toward Tau. The official event description says the crossing requires extraordinary energy and asks players to collect Moonflesh on Eris to provide fuel. The quest’s final handoff is the story expression of that requirement.
This makes Praghasa more than a destination marker. It is the mechanism—or at minimum the central enabler—of the planned crossing. The available story establishes its intended function, but the prologue does not show every technical detail of how the journey will work.
Why the handoff is the cliffhanger
By giving Praghasa the gathered material, the Vessel completes the prerequisite the player can directly influence. What remains is the mothership’s promised role: using the supplied energy to open or sustain a route to Tau. The cliffhanger is consequently practical rather than mysterious. The story has shown what the player must provide, then stops before showing the result.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why Tau carries so much historical weight
Tau is the distant system to which the Orokin sent the Sentients to terraform. The Sentients eventually returned and waged the Old War, the conflict that shaped the Tenno’s history and much of the setting’s central trauma.

That history gives the prologue’s preparation a meaning beyond a new destination. The Tenno are working toward the place from which the Sentients came back, so the journey points directly at the origin of the conflict that defined their past. The quest does not rewrite that history or resolve the Old War; it reopens the route to the setting’s most consequential off-screen location.

The memory sequence reinforces this connection by placing the new logistical mission alongside character history. The result is a setup that is both physical—prepare a Vessel and fuel Praghasa—and historical—return toward the system tied to the Old War.
Prologue to Tau versus Epoch Operation: Taubound
The names and release timing make these easy to conflate. Their functions are different:
| Aspect | Prologue to Tau | Epoch Operation: Taubound |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Permanent Codex quest; remains after the operation ends | Limited operation ending November 17, 2026 |
| How to access | Complete The Hex and The Old Peace, then use the Orbiter Codex’s Prologue Quest/Chapters entry | Accessed as the time-limited operation’s activities |
| Primary activity | Story route through Dark Refractory, a memory, Kronia Relay and Eris Dermacrust | Resource-gathering operation on Eris with event conversations |
| Narrative function | Introduces the Vessel’s role and prepares material for Praghasa | Supports the limited Tau-themed event and its daily dialogue |
| Rewards and dialogue | Its ending is the Vessel’s handoff to Praghasa; Taubound rewards and dialogue are not part of it | Provides the operation’s own rewards and daily dialogue |
The distinction matters for two reasons. First, missing the operation window does not remove the story quest. Second, completing the quest does not automatically grant the operation’s event rewards or count as its daily dialogue.
What the ending sets up next
The immediate unresolved question
The prologue leaves Praghasa supplied but does not depict the crossing. The next story step must therefore address whether the mothership can use the collected energy, how the route is opened, and what the Tenno encounter on the other side. Those are open narrative questions, not events shown in Prologue to Tau.
The unresolved historical question
Tau is tied to the Sentients’ origin point in the current setting’s history, but the prologue does not provide a new account of what happened there after the Old War. It establishes a direction for the story rather than a definitive explanation of Tau’s present condition.
What you can safely conclude
- The Tau journey is an active objective, not a completed expedition.
- Praghasa is the intended mothership or route-enabling craft.
- The Vessel has a direct preparation role and delivers the collected material.
- The Eris mission supplies the fuel or energy requirement described for the crossing.
- The next major reveal must come from later content, because this prologue ends at the handoff.
If the quest is not appearing
Use this order of checks:
- Confirm that The Hex is marked complete.
- Confirm that The Old Peace is also marked complete.
- Open the Orbiter Codex rather than the Taubound event interface.
- Look specifically for Prologue Quest/Chapters.
- Remember that Taubound’s end date does not remove the permanent quest.
If all five checks are satisfied and the entry is still absent, the documented unlock information does not identify another prerequisite. The safest interpretation is to recheck quest completion status and the Codex category before assuming that the event’s availability controls the prologue.
Bottom line
Prologue to Tau is the preparation chapter for a journey that has not yet begun. Complete The Hex and The Old Peace, launch it from the Orbiter Codex, follow the Vessel from the Dark Refractory through Kronia Relay to Eris Dermacrust, and you will end by handing the collected material to Praghasa. That handoff explains the Vessel’s purpose and confirms the mothership’s role, while leaving the actual crossing—and the answers waiting in Tau—for a later chapter.
