Direct Power On makes a projector start when AC power is supplied, without a separate press of its power button. It does not, by itself, mean the projector will start when an HDMI source turns on. That behavior usually requires a separate signal-triggered feature or HDMI-CEC, and the available options depend on the exact projector model.
What Direct Power On does
Direct Power On is triggered by mains power: when AC power is applied, the projector starts automatically. Epson describes its setting as turning on the projector by plugging it in, without pressing the power button. Epson’s Operation menu documentation and Sony’s projector guidance describe this behavior for their documented products.
This can be useful in an installation where a controlled outlet or power circuit supplies the projector. The feature describes startup behavior only; it does not make abrupt power removal a safe substitute for the normal shutdown procedure.

Epson documents Auto Power On options associated with HDMI1, including detection of a connection or input signal on certain models. Those are not interchangeable with AC-triggered Direct Power On. Sony also describes direct power-on/off in the context of a whole system switched using a circuit breaker or other means; check the specific model’s instructions before assuming what that control does.

For HDMI-CEC, ViewSonic’s projector documentation describes coordinated power control with compatible connected devices. The projector and source must support CEC, and the required settings must be enabled. An HDMI connection alone does not guarantee that one device will power on the other.
How to enable the right startup behavior
- Identify the exact projector model. Find its current manufacturer manual or support page; menu labels and conditions vary by model.
- Choose the trigger you want. For startup when AC is restored, locate Direct Power On. For startup from an HDMI connection or signal, look for Auto Power On or Signal Power On and verify the supported port and trigger.
- Set up CEC separately if needed. Confirm that both the projector and connected device support HDMI-CEC, enable it on each device, and check the manual for any connection or configuration requirements.
- Follow the model’s shutdown and cooling instructions. Do not assume that a switched outlet or breaker can safely cut power immediately after use.
Depending on the model, related controls may appear under Operation, Setup, or Power Settings. These labels are not universal, so use the manual rather than following a menu path from another projector.

Power-off and cooling precautions
Automatic startup does not change how the projector should be shut down. Sony warns that cutting power at the breaker or removing the power cord stops the cooling fan. Follow the projector’s normal shutdown instructions and allow it to cool sufficiently before enclosing it. Keep intake and exhaust vents clear.

Direct Power On alone is not evidence that repeatedly removing AC power during operation is appropriate.

What to verify before relying on automation
- Trigger: Is startup caused by AC restoration, cable connection, detected video, or a CEC command?
- Port and source: Does signal-triggered startup apply to the HDMI port in use, and does the source produce the kind of signal the projector detects?
- Device compatibility: For CEC, do both devices support it, and is it enabled on each?
- Shutdown: Does the planned power-control setup preserve the projector’s required shutdown and cooling process?
- Power behavior: Consult the model manual for standby and power-use details; behavior and consumption cannot be generalized across projector models.
The manufacturer documentation cited here establishes these behaviors for the models it covers, not how common the features are across the projector market. It also does not establish a universal standby-power figure or identify a best projector. Verify a feature in the manual for the specific model before relying on it.
