“Creating Backup” means the Project Zomboid server is running its backup routine, not that your world has necessarily been lost. The most urgent check is writable storage on both the volume holding the Zomboid data and the system temporary directory. Stop the server cleanly, preserve the save and configuration, inspect the logs for ZipBackup.onStartup and I/O errors, and only then test disabling startup backups with backupsOnStart=false in the server’s generated INI.
What “Creating Backup” means
Project Zomboid displays this status while its server backup code is creating an archive. The server has not necessarily frozen, and the message does not by itself indicate that the map or player data is corrupt. A large world, a slow disk, or a backup destination with limited throughput can make the phase take time; a failed archive operation can leave the process appearing stuck.

The exact option names and their defaults can vary with the generated server configuration, so edit the INI created for your server rather than inventing a new file or copying settings from an unrelated installation.

Do this before changing or deleting anything
A stuck backup is a recovery problem first and a configuration problem second. Deleting the world, clearing the entire Zomboid directory, or repeatedly force-killing the process can turn a recoverable backup failure into permanent data loss.
- Stop the server cleanly. Use the server console’s normal shutdown command or the control provided by your host. If it will not respond, terminate only the confirmed server process and record that a forced stop was required.
- Make a preservation copy. Copy the current save/world directory, the generated server INI, Sandbox and spawn settings, the Workshop and Mods records, and the available logs to a different disk or destination. Do not rely on a copy stored on the same nearly-full volume.
- Do not start a second instance. Before testing, verify that no older Project Zomboid server process is still running. Two instances can write the same world and make both the backup and the save unreliable.
- Write down the current state. Record the game build or branch, operating system, hardware, available space on each relevant volume, enabled mods and Workshop IDs, and any INI changes. This information is useful if support is needed and lets you undo a diagnostic change.

1. The save or temporary volume is full
A backup needs room to create and finalize an archive. The required space is not limited to the game-install directory: the world may be under the server’s Zomboid data location, while temporary archive data is written through the operating system’s temporary directory. A support report documenting zombie.core.backup.ZipBackup.onStartup also reported “No space left on device” and an inability to write the archive.
Check every volume involved in the operation. On a multi-disk host, the game can have plenty of free space while the save disk or temporary directory is full. Also account for old backup archives, crash dumps, log growth, and snapshots that consume space outside the game folder.
Do not bulk-delete files while the server is stopped. First copy the current save and configuration elsewhere, then remove only archives you can identify as disposable. If the volume is repeatedly close to full, move the external backup destination or enlarge the volume instead of relying on emergency deletions.
2. ZipBackup fails during startup
The ZipBackup.onStartup path identifies the startup backup routine. A separate support report found that turning off backup settings in servertest.ini allowed that particular server to start. That is a reported workaround, not proof that every “Creating Backup” incident has the same cause. Storage, permissions, a bad path, or a damaged archive can still be responsible.
Use the setting only as a controlled diagnostic after preserving the save. If the server starts with startup backup disabled, create an independent backup immediately and continue investigating why the normal archive path failed.

3. A duplicate process or active file writes
Copying a live world while the server is changing chunk, player, or map files can produce an inconsistent backup. A second server process can do the same thing while also holding files open. The backup procedure recommends stopping the server before copying and testing a restore on a separate profile.
Check the process list or your hosting panel for duplicate instances. End only the processes that you have identified as the intended Project Zomboid server; unrelated Java or service processes may belong to other applications.
4. Permissions, paths, and filesystem problems
If both relevant locations have free space, inspect the log for permission denials, missing directories, invalid archive paths, and generic input/output errors. The account running the server must be able to read the world and create, modify, and rename files in the backup destination and temporary directory.
A path can also fail after a drive letter, mount point, container volume, or service account changes. Avoid “fixing” this by granting unrestricted permissions to the entire machine. Correct the ownership and access on the specific save, temporary, and backup locations, then retry with the server stopped.

A mod or game update can leave a previously working server unable to load or archive its current state. The developer recommends regular backups even for private or whitelisted servers because a mod update or game update can cause problems. Compare the build or branch, enabled mod IDs, Workshop IDs, and load order with the last known-good configuration before assuming the world itself is damaged.
Safe recovery sequence
Step 1: Preserve a restore packet
With the server stopped, create a dated copy on separate storage containing:

- The generated server INI, including
servertest.iniwhen that is the file your server uses. - Sandbox, spawn, and other server-specific configuration files.
- The Workshop and Mods lists, including IDs and load-order information.
- Relevant logs and any existing backup archives.
Keep the original untouched while diagnosing. A copy is useful only if you can identify which files belong together and when they were copied.
Step 2: Check storage in the right places
Check free space on the volume containing the Zomboid data and on the operating system’s temporary directory. On a hosted server, these may be different mounts or quotas. Check inode or file-count limits as well when the filesystem supports them; a volume can report free bytes while refusing new files because its file allocation limit is exhausted.
After preserving the restore packet, remove only clearly disposable old archives or move them to separate storage. Start the server again only after there is enough headroom for the world and a new archive.
Step 3: Inspect processes and logs
Confirm that only one intended server process is running. Then search the newest log for:
ZipBackupandonStartup.No space left on device.- Permission or access-denied messages.
- Archive, path, rename, and input/output errors.
Keep the complete log context rather than copying only the final line. If you contact official support, include logs.zip when it is available along with the exact technical details requested by support.
Step 4: Temporarily disable the startup backup
The ServerOptions API identifies backupsOnStart as the startup-backup control. In the server’s own generated INI, locate that option and temporarily set it to false:

backupsOnStart=falseUse the exact spelling and formatting already used in that file. Stop the server before editing, retain the original line in your preservation copy, and change no unrelated settings during this test. If your generated file uses a different server name or location, follow that installation’s path rather than creating a second INI.
Start the server once. If it still fails, startup backup was not the only blocking condition; restore the original setting and continue with the log, permission, path, and mod checks. If it starts, do not treat the problem as solved yet: make an external backup and test that it can be restored.
Step 5: Create and test an external backup
With the server running normally, use a controlled shutdown before making the copy. Store it on a separate disk or destination, retain the save and all matching configuration files as one packet, and record the copy date. Test the restore on a separate profile so the test cannot overwrite the live world.

Step 6: Re-enable protection or document the alternative
Once storage, permissions, paths, or the damaged archive issue is corrected, set backupsOnStart back to its previous value and verify one clean startup. If you deliberately keep startup backups disabled, document that decision and use a replacement schedule based on backupsPeriod, with retention controlled by backupsCount and version-change behavior considered through backupsOnVersionChange. A replacement plan must include a separate destination and periodic restore tests; otherwise it is only a copy routine, not a recovery strategy.

The first two approaches are complementary: preservation protects the world, while the temporary setting change helps determine whether startup ZipBackup is the immediate blocker.

When the server still will not start
Storage is adequate but the log shows access or path errors
Verify the service account’s ownership and write access to the save, temporary directory, and backup destination. Check that the path exists and that a mounted drive or container volume is actually available to the account running the server. Correct the specific location, then retry with the server stopped and the preservation copy intact.

The error began after an update
Record the exact build or branch and compare the complete mod and Workshop list with the known-good copy. Do not remove mods from the live save one at a time without a preserved copy; that can change the world in ways that complicate restoration. Use a separate profile for experiments.
There is no clear error in the visible console
Collect the full logs rather than relying on the status line. Include the operating system and hardware, free-space figures, server INI, build or branch, enabled mods and Workshop IDs, and logs.zip in a support request. Official support specifically asks for exact issue details, technical specifications, and saved crash information when relevant.
Preventing the next startup backup failure
- Use a separate destination. Rotate copies to an external SSD, hard drive, or another server volume instead of retaining every archive beside the live world.
- Back up before updates. Make a known-good copy before changing the game version or updating mods.
- Test restoration. Restore at least one copy on a separate profile so you know the packet is usable.
- Retain the complete packet. Keep the save, INI, Sandbox and spawn files, Workshop and Mods records, and copy date together.
- Monitor capacity. Check both the save volume and temporary directory before scheduled or version-change backups.
- Record configuration changes. Note whether
backupsOnStart,backupsOnVersionChange,backupsPeriod, orbackupsCountdiffer from the generated defaults. - Keep only a deliberate retention set. A rotation policy prevents old archives from silently consuming the space needed for the next backup.
Questions players commonly ask
Does “Creating Backup” mean the map is gone?
No. It identifies the backup phase. The map may be intact even when the archive operation fails; preserve the world and read the error before considering any reset.
Can startup backups be disabled?
Yes. The generated server configuration exposes backupsOnStart. Temporarily setting it to false is a reported workaround for one startup ZipBackup failure, but it should be done only after preserving the world and followed by an external, tested backup.
Should I delete the old backup files?
Only after making a safe copy elsewhere and identifying which archives are disposable. Deleting first can remove the evidence or the only usable restore point.
What should I send to support?
