Build 42 multiplayer is usable, but your group should treat it as a version-sensitive survival test rather than a carefree drop-in update. As of 15 October 2026, Build 42.20 is on the public Stable branch. Build 42.21 is an Unstable line with additional multiplayer, anti-cheat, Steam authentication, high-ping, vehicle, passenger, and Z-level synchronization fixes. Pick one branch, put every client and the server on that exact branch, and back up the save before changing anything.
For a small, trusted group, Steam co-op is the quickest and least administrative option. A dedicated server is better when the world must remain available without the host, needs whitelists and administrators, or requires scheduled backups. Start with a vanilla session, add compatible mods in controlled batches, and assign complementary jobs so Build 42’s animals, seasonal agriculture, expanded crafting, fishing, and larger Knox Country map create a sustainable settlement instead of duplicated work.

What is the current Build 42 multiplayer situation?
Build 42.20 is the public Stable release. Build 42.21 is an Unstable patch line that continues multiplayer and controller improvements while addressing anti-cheat, Steam authentication, high-ping driving, passenger teleportation, Z-level synchronization, and other online problems. Unstable updates can still disrupt an ongoing game, so a group that values a long-lived save should begin on Stable unless it specifically needs an Unstable fix and accepts migration risk.
| Choice | What you get | Save and maintenance implications | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Build 42.20 Stable | Publicly supported branch with the current Build 42 feature set. | Use the same 42.20 branch on every client and the server; keep dated backups before updates. | Groups starting a campaign they want to preserve. |
| Build 42.21 Unstable | Newer multiplayer, authentication, anti-cheat, and synchronization fixes. | Patch frequency and breakage tolerance are higher; verify compatibility after every update. | Test groups that can restore backups and accept interruptions. |
Build 41 via legacy41 |
The previous game branch. | Build 41 saves do not migrate to Build 42. Select the legacy41 beta to continue a Build 41 world. |
Players who are keeping an existing Build 41 campaign. |
| Unstable 42.19 | An older Unstable snapshot. | Existing 42.19 Unstable saves require the matching 42.19 beta; Build 42.20 map additions make them incompatible with 42.20. | Only a group deliberately freezing that exact snapshot. |
The practical rule is simple: branch parity matters more than the displayed major number. Record the exact build in your group chat, server notes, and backup folder. If one player updates early, do not let that player load the world until the server and every other client match.

Lock the branch and protect your save
- Choose Stable or Unstable. For most new groups, select Build 42.20 Stable. Choose 42.21 Unstable only when everyone agrees to test and restore backups.
- Record the build. Write down the branch and full version number for the server and each client. Include the date of the decision.
- Make a cold backup. Stop the server or leave the co-op session, copy the complete save directory, and label the copy with the branch and date. Keep at least one copy outside the game folder.
- Change branches only after backing up. Never switch a valuable save first and plan a backup afterward. If a migration fails, return to the dated copy and the branch that created it.
- Test a disposable world. Have one player connect, transfer items, enter a vehicle, move between floors, and perform a timed action. This catches authentication and synchronization problems before they affect the main settlement.
Steam co-op or a dedicated server?
Both models use the same branch and mod-compatibility rules. The difference is who owns the running process and how much administration the group wants to perform.
| Comparison | Steam co-op | Dedicated server |
|---|---|---|
| Setup time | Fastest for a trusted small group; the host starts the session and invites friends. | More preparation: install, configure, test, and maintain a separate server process. |
| Persistence when host is offline | The world is normally unavailable when the host is not running it. | Can remain online independently of any one player’s game session. |
| Player capacity | Best kept to a small group while multiplayer support continues to mature. | Allows more deliberate capacity planning, but hardware, bandwidth, and version stability remain limits. |
| Backups and restore | The host is responsible for copying and restoring saves. | Supports scheduled, repeatable backups when the operator automates or documents them. |
| Whitelists and administration | Simple invite-based access. | Better suited to whitelists, administrator roles, moderation, and a persistent community. |
| Mod management | Every participant must have the same compatible collection as the session. | The operator can publish one server preset, but clients still need matching Workshop content and load order. |
| Network performance | Depends heavily on the host’s connection and hardware. | Can use a machine and connection selected for the group, yet high ping still causes driving and teleportation problems. |
| Recurring cost | No separate server rental is required; the host supplies the running machine and connection. | A rented or separately maintained machine creates an ongoing cost; the exact amount depends on provider, region, capacity, and management. |
When Steam co-op is the right choice
Use Steam co-op for two to a handful of friends who play at overlapping times and trust one person to host and back up the world. It minimizes administration and is the preferred starting point when you are still proving that your branch, mods, and connection are stable.

Choose dedicated hosting when players need to join at different times, the settlement should progress while the original host is away, or you need whitelisting, staff roles, logs, and scheduled backups. Treat the server as an operations project: document the build, mod preset, backup location, restart procedure, and who can change settings.
A safe first-session procedure
- Start vanilla. Create the co-op or dedicated session with no optional mods. Confirm that every player can authenticate and remain connected for a short test.
- Exercise the risky actions. Transfer items between inventories, use containers, perform a timed action, drive a vehicle, carry a passenger, and move between building levels. These actions exercise the server-authoritative systems where desynchronization is most visible.
- Record the baseline. Note the build, map settings, world seed if used, player list, and the time of the test. Keep this information with the save backup.
- Add one mod preset. Install a small, known-compatible collection through the official mod manager. Restart the session and repeat the same tests.
- Expand gradually. Add another preset only after the previous one works. If something breaks, remove the newest change first instead of changing several variables at once.
What Build 42 changes for cooperative survival
Expanded Knox Country and exploration
Build 42 expands and reworks Knox Country, giving a group more territory to scout, secure, and connect with roads and supply routes. Plan expeditions around fuel, vehicle condition, medical supplies, and a return point rather than sending every survivor into an uncharted area at once.
Crafting and construction as a shared project
Deeper crafting and construction make a settlement more than a pile of locked rooms. Assign one player to carpentry and structural work while another maintains tools, transports materials, and records what the build still needs. Keep a central storage scheme so rare components do not disappear into personal containers.
Animals and husbandry
Domestic and wild animals add ongoing work and new outputs: meat, leather, eggs, manure, and milk. Animal care is a time-sensitive role, not a one-time loot run. Fence and label the area, store feed and tools nearby, and designate a backup caretaker for raids or sickness. Leather and manure also create reasons to maintain production after the first food stockpile is secure.
Seasonal agriculture
Farming now includes crops such as corn, peas, tobacco, and herbs, with seasonal planting windows. A cooperative farm should keep a written calendar, reserve seed, and plant more than one crop type. Pair the farmer with a logistics player who handles water, storage, and preservation so a missed window does not become a settlement-wide food crisis.
Fishing that reacts to noise
Fishing is more interactive and responds to noise. Treat the shoreline as a working site: one player fishes, another watches approaches, and a third transports catches or manages camp tasks. Quiet preparation and controlled movement can matter as much as the choice of location.

Urban-focused zombie distribution
The new distribution system concentrates more hordes in urban areas. Rural sites may offer breathing room, but they are not automatically safe. Use towns for high-value searches and return routes, then build layered defenses and fallback rooms before the group commits to repeated urban runs.
Shared world seeds
Shared world seeds can standardize generated elements between saves. Write the seed and sandbox settings in the server record so a replacement world can reproduce the intended starting conditions. A seed does not replace a save backup; it only helps recreate generation inputs.

Build 42 rewards specialization without forcing every player into a permanent class. Rotate jobs when someone is injured or absent, but give each system a primary owner and a backup.
- Farming and animal care: planting calendar, feed, fencing, eggs, milk, manure, and emergency harvests.
- Carpentry and construction: walls, storage, elevated walkways, rain protection, and repair materials.
- Mechanics and transport: vehicle condition, fuel runs, parts inventory, and safe passenger routes.
- Medical: injury treatment, disinfectants, medicine stock, and a fallback clinic.
- Scouting and security: map marking, urban threat checks, watch rotations, and evacuation routes.
- Fishing and food processing: shoreline operations, noise discipline, preservation, and ration planning.
- Logistics and records: container labels, seed and tool counts, mod notes, backups, and supply requests.
At the start of a campaign, agree on a shared storage convention and a rule for taking emergency supplies. Clear records prevent a common multiplayer failure: everyone gathers food while nobody brings nails, fuel, medicine, or replacement tools.
Use the official mod manager and server browser deliberately
The official mod manager can search, favorite, order, inspect dependencies, identify incompatible mods, and share presets. The server browser can filter modded, full, or empty servers and sort by ping and player count. These features make compatibility administration part of normal play rather than an afterthought.
- Create a named preset. Give the collection a versioned name such as
Settlement-42.20-v1and record the date. - Inspect dependencies and conflicts. Do not assume that a mod listed for Build 42 works in multiplayer. Check its stated branch, required dependencies, and known incompatibilities.
- Make client and server collections identical. Match item order and enabled status. A client with an extra or missing dependency can fail to join or corrupt the test result.
- Share the preset before the first session. Have every player install it, restart the game, and confirm the same collection before connecting.
- Use the browser filters. Filter for the intended server state, then sort by ping. A low-ping empty test server is more useful for diagnosing a mod than a full server with a different configuration.
- Freeze the preset during a campaign. Add or remove one mod only after a backup and a short test world. Keep the previous preset available for rollback.
Why Build 42 can feel different online
Build 42 moves inventory operations, item transfers, container interactions, loot distribution, and TimedActions to the server. The client displays the result, but the server executes the action. This design improves consistency and gives the anti-cheat system a stronger basis, while exposing weak connections and overloaded servers more clearly.
What server authority means for players
- An item may appear to move only after the server confirms the transfer.
- A timed action can pause or fail when the connection stalls instead of completing locally.
- Two players should not assume that a visual animation proves an action was accepted; check the resulting inventory or world state.
- Do not use debug tools or client-side shortcuts on a live shared save. The original multiplayer release was explicitly for stress testing and warned against debug use.
Anti-cheat and fair administration
Build 42 includes a full anti-cheat suite, and the 42.21 line adds further coverage. Use whitelists for trusted groups, give administrative access only to people who need it, and record any configuration change. A server-side action model means that a suspicious inventory result should be investigated in server logs and backups rather than “fixed” by handing out replacement items immediately.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Player-count guidance
The first Build 42 multiplayer release was labeled “Multiplayer is WIP and has been released for stress testing.” The developer strongly advised whitelisted servers or Steam co-op, recommended disabling mods, warned against debug use, and advised no more than 20 players at that stage. Those limits are version-specific operational guidance, not a permanent guarantee for every later patch.

For a public or larger server, recheck the current patch notes before advertising a capacity. Measure the actual experience under load: simultaneous inventory transfers, vehicle travel, crowded urban areas, and players changing floors. A nominal slot count does not tell you whether high ping, CPU load, or bandwidth will produce rubber-banding and teleportation.

Players cannot connect after an update
- Compare the exact branch and build on every client and the server.
- Confirm that a 42.19 Unstable save is not being opened on 42.20.
- Check Steam authentication and restart the server and clients.
- Disable all optional mods and test a vanilla connection.
- Restore the last known-good backup if the save was loaded after a mismatched update.
Desync, rubber-banding, or teleportation
- Ask whether the symptom appears during driving, passenger travel, inventory transfers, or movement between levels; the category helps isolate the trigger.
- Check ping for every affected player and test from a quieter area.
- Stop high-bandwidth activity and restart the session.
- On 42.21, verify that the server and clients actually received the patch containing the relevant synchronization fixes.
- Do not add mods while diagnosing a network problem; reproduce it on the vanilla baseline first.
Items, containers, or timed actions behave incorrectly
- Wait for the action to finish and inspect the authoritative inventory or container rather than relying on the animation.
- Have only one player manipulate the affected container during the test.
- Restart the session and repeat the action with no mods.
- Restore a backup if a confirmed mismatch changed the shared world state.
A modded server will not load
- Compare the shared preset, dependency list, and load order character for character.
- Remove the newest mod and test.
- Check that the mod targets Build 42 rather than Build 41.
- Rebuild the preset one item at a time, keeping the last working copy.
Plan a long-term campaign
Phase 1: secure a base
Clear a defensible building, establish labeled storage, secure water and medical supplies, and identify two exits. Do not spend every early day on decoration; the goal is a reliable reset point for later expeditions.
Phase 2: connect food systems
Start seasonal crops, prepare animal facilities, and establish a fishing routine. Keep separate reserves for seed, feed, and emergency meals so one failed harvest does not consume the next season’s inputs.
Phase 3: build mobility and production
Repair vehicles, stock spare parts, improve workshops, and construct protected routes between the base, fields, animal area, and shoreline. Assign logistics to track the materials that specialized players tend to overlook.
Phase 4: expand the map safely
Use scouting teams to mark urban threats, supply targets, fallback shelters, and fuel points. Because hordes are more urban-focused, schedule town trips with a clear extraction time and avoid committing the entire settlement’s skilled players to one run.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Phase 5: maintain the server as infrastructure
Keep dated backups, a branch record, the active mod preset, administrator contacts, and a written restore procedure. Before a patch, stop the world, back it up, test the update on a copy, and only then move the live save.
Bottom line for a new group
Start a new Build 42.20 Stable world with Steam co-op, no mods, and a small trusted roster. Prove authentication, inventory, vehicles, passengers, and level changes on a disposable test save. Then add a single shared mod preset, assign complementary settlement roles, and maintain dated backups. Move to a dedicated server when persistence, whitelisting, administration, or scheduled backups justify the extra work. Choose 42.21 Unstable only when the group accepts patch-related breakage and can restore the exact backup created before every branch change.
