There is no official public dictionary of words that are banned on Twitch. Twitch says it withholds its list of prohibited slurs so people cannot use it to evade enforcement, and it evaluates the surrounding context. That does not make borderline language safe: targeted slurs, hateful conduct, harassment and sexual harassment can lead to content or monetization removal, warnings or suspension.
This guide explains what Twitch actually publishes, how its categories apply to chat, video, whispers and account information, and what streamers, moderators and viewers should do when abusive language appears.
Policy check: October 16, 2026. Twitch describes its Community Guidelines as a living document that it reviews and updates with streamers, moderators and outside safety experts. The page does not present a fixed version number, so check the live policy when a decision has serious consequences.
Does Twitch publish a list of banned words?
No. In its policy FAQ, Twitch asks, “What slurs are considered violating?” and explains that it does not publish the prohibited-slur list because doing so would make evasion easier. Twitch also says it considers context. That answer is deliberately different from a dictionary: a term’s appearance in an example, a filter or a discussion does not guarantee that every use is allowed.

The rules apply across the service, not only in a live chat box. Community Guidelines cover video, chat, whispers, accounts and other content surfaces. A username, on-screen text, voice line, emote, private message or posted clip can therefore be assessed under the same conduct rules.
One narrow rule is unusually explicit: Twitch states that the version of the N-word ending in a “hard R” is never allowed under any circumstances. It is not necessary to reproduce that slur here. More generally, do not treat the absence of a term from a public list as permission to use it.
The policy categories that matter
“Bad language” is not one Twitch category. Moderators should first identify what the language is doing: expressing hatred toward a protected group, attacking an individual, making an unwanted sexual advance, or merely using profanity. The category affects the likely response and the evidence a reviewer will consider.

Hateful conduct and protected characteristics
Twitch lists race, ethnicity, color, caste, national origin, immigration status, religion, sex, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, serious medical condition and veteran status among protected characteristics. The policy also provides some protections for age. Twitch says users receive equal protection under this policy globally.

Hateful slurs are prohibited whether they are aimed at a particular individual or used more generally. A message can violate the rule even when no named person is present if it denigrates a protected group or encourages discrimination, harassment or violence. The absence of a direct target is not a safe harbor.
Harassment is broader than slurs
A language violation does not need to contain a slur. Twitch identifies personal attacks, promoting physical harm, malicious brigading, wishing harm or death, and celebrating another person’s traumatic experience as harassment examples. A reviewer may look at the relationship between participants, the history of the exchange and whether the behavior is part of a campaign.
Twitch says it evaluates context and may ask for clarification when an interaction is ambiguous. That does not mean an unclear insult is automatically acceptable; it means the surrounding conversation can matter. If you believe conduct crosses the line, you can report it rather than trying to prove the case yourself in chat.

Sexual harassment has its own rules
Sexual harassment includes unwanted remarks about someone’s body or appearance, sexual requests or advances, sexual objectification and negative attacks about perceived sexual behavior. Twitch gives repeated unwanted advances, requests for sexual favors and unsolicited graphic sexual statements as examples.

Keep this category separate from ordinary profanity. A crude word may become a sexual-harassment issue when it is directed at a person, persists after a boundary is stated or is paired with an unwanted request. Moderators should preserve the surrounding messages because a single line may not show the pattern.
How context changes a language decision
Context is a factor, not a blanket exemption. Twitch describes limited allowances for clear educational or satirical discussion and for some non-hateful uses. The same term can be treated differently depending on its target, purpose, repetition and presentation, but no streamer can guarantee an outcome by adding a disclaimer after the fact.

Quoting a word to report abuse is therefore not automatically safe. A moderator can describe “a slur” without reproducing it, capture evidence privately and submit the report. If a quote is essential to an educational segment, make the purpose unmistakable, limit repetition and avoid directing the language at anyone in the channel.
What streamers are responsible for when chat becomes abusive
Twitch expects broadcasters to mitigate hateful and harassing material posted by third parties. The platform names AutoMod, timeouts and channel bans as examples. It also says it will not suspend a broadcaster who is acting in good faith to remove abuse from an external source. Good faith is an action standard, not a promise that every incident will be excused.

Prepare moderation before going live
- Set an AutoMod level. Start with a level that matches your audience and review held messages before they appear. Twitch announced on July 23, 2024 that it had clarified its sexual-harassment policy and introduced an AutoMod category intended to flag messages that may contain sexual harassment. That announcement documents the 2024 change; it does not establish that the feature’s labels or availability are unchanged today.
- Define moderator authority. Tell moderators when to delete a message, issue a timeout, ban an account or escalate to you. Give them permission to act quickly on threats and targeted abuse.
- Write a channel rule. State that slurs, threats, sexual harassment and attacks on protected groups are removed. A visible rule helps viewers understand why a message disappeared, but it does not replace Twitch’s policy.
- Keep evidence safely. When an incident may require a report, note the account, time, channel and surrounding messages. Do not repost abusive text or clips merely to amplify it.
Respond during the incident
- Stop exposure. Delete or hide the message and use a timeout or ban when appropriate. If the content is in voice or video, cut the segment or remove the clip.
- Address the behavior, not the slur. Say that targeted abuse is not permitted without repeating the offending term. Repeating it can expose more viewers and make the context harder to interpret.
- Escalate credible threats. Preserve relevant evidence and report the account through Twitch’s reporting process. If there is an immediate real-world danger, contact local emergency services rather than relying only on platform moderation.
- Do not encourage a pile-on. Asking viewers to attack, mass-report or contact the sender can turn a moderation event into brigading.
After the stream
Review clips, VODs, titles, panels and chat logs for the same material. Remove copied abuse, update filters if a pattern appeared and tell your moderator team what action was taken. If an automated filter blocked benign educational content, adjust the setting while keeping the underlying rule clear.

Viewers can customize their own chat experience with Twitch’s Chat Filters. The Viewer Controls description identifies filters for discrimination, sexually explicit language, hostility and profanity, and says the preference follows the viewer across channels. These are personal display controls: they do not change Twitch’s Community Guidelines, remove content for everyone or substitute for a broadcaster’s moderation.
Use the report function when language appears to target a person or protected group, threatens harm, coordinates harassment or constitutes sexual harassment. Include enough surrounding context for a reviewer to understand the exchange. Avoid quoting the slur in public replies, screenshots posted for attention or social-media arguments.
If you are the target, you can leave the channel, block or report the account and ask a moderator for help. You do not have to remain in a conversation to establish that it was harmful.

How Twitch enforcement can escalate
Twitch says violations may result in content removal, monetization removal, warnings or account suspension. It also says all instances of hateful conduct and harassment lead to enforcement action, with severity increasing for targeted, personal, graphic, repeated or prolonged conduct; conduct that incites abuse; and threats or coercion. The most egregious violations may receive an indefinite suspension on a first offense.

For scale only, Twitch’s H2 2024 Transparency Report recorded 55,963 enforcement actions in the combined “Harassment & Sexual Harassment” category. That figure is not a count of banned words, slurs or language-only violations, and it cannot predict the penalty for a particular phrase.
A five-question test for a borderline phrase
- Who is the target? Is the language directed at an individual, a protected group, nobody in particular or a fictional subject?
- What is the conduct? Could it be hateful conduct, harassment, sexual harassment, a threat or merely profanity? A single message can fit more than one category.
- Is the context unmistakable? Is this clearly education, satire, denunciation, an empowering use or non-hateful music, or does it look like a real attack?
- How often and how intensely did it occur? Repetition, graphic detail, prolonged exchanges and calls for others to join increase risk.
- Where did it appear and what did the broadcaster do? Consider video, chat, whispers, an account name and other surfaces, then document moderation actions taken in response.
If any answer points to a targeted or harmful use, do not test the boundary live. Remove the material, avoid repeating it, apply a timeout or ban, and report when appropriate. If you are creating educational content, rewrite the example so the lesson remains clear without unnecessary repetition.

- Searching for a “complete banned-word list.” Twitch intentionally does not publish one, so an unofficial list will always be incomplete and may be outdated.
- Treating quotation marks as protection. Quoting someone else can still expose viewers to a targeted slur or harassment.
- Assuming a filter equals permission. AutoMod and viewer filters are tools; they do not define the policy or guarantee that a message is compliant.
- Leaving abusive chat visible. A streamer does not need to repeat the message, but should take reasonable mitigation steps.
- Using “it was a joke” as the whole defense. Satire must be clear, and a joke that denigrates or threatens someone can still violate the rules.
- Ignoring non-chat surfaces. Titles, panels, clips, usernames, whispers and on-screen overlays can carry the same policy risk.
- Publicly reproducing the harmful term to condemn it. State what happened without spreading the exact language, especially when a euphemism communicates the point.
What to remember
Twitch’s approach is intentionally contextual rather than a public blacklist. The safest operating rule is to avoid slurs and targeted insults, make educational or satirical purpose unmistakable, and moderate third-party abuse promptly. When an incident occurs, the combination of target, category, context, repetition, location and mitigation gives you a more reliable answer than any unofficial list of words.
