Yumo review
A focused iOS vocabulary app with offline study, kana and kanji tracing, and a one-time Pro upgrade.

Yumo makes Japanese vocabulary visible through Lock Screen and Home Screen widgets, displaying JLPT-graded words with readings, meanings, and pronunciation at selectable intervals. It is aimed at iOS learners who want brief, recurring vocabulary exposure alongside kana and kanji stroke practice. The app runs offline and requires no account; its focused scope suits solo learners building vocabulary, but it is not a broad speaking-practice tool.
The Free plan includes N5 vocabulary, a hiragana and katakana chart, pronunciation and stroke practice, widgets, saved words, notifications, and themes. Yumo Pro costs $8.99 as a one-time purchase. It adds vocabulary from N4 through N1, the full 7,972-word dictionary, an auto journey from N5 to N1, faster word rhythms, and more widget color and text customization. That split gives learners a way to start with N5 before paying, while access to higher JLPT levels and full dictionary browsing depends on Pro.
The main distinction is how Yumo fits into a study routine: widgets put words on the phone screen, while the dictionary, pronunciation, and guided tracing provide ways to inspect and practice them. It is available on iOS, and the currently listed App Store version is iPhone-only, so it is a poor fit for Android learners or anyone seeking a cross-platform app. Choose Yumo for offline vocabulary reminders, kana and kanji writing practice, and a modest one-time upgrade; choose another kind of learning app if speaking practice is central to your goals.
