xBIM Xplorer is a free, open-source viewer for Industry Foundation Classes building-information models. It is aimed at developers and IFC specialists who need to open models, inspect building properties, navigate model trees, control model visibility, and view models in 360 degrees. Stand-alone Windows software and a web version support IFC2x3, IFC4, ifcXML, and ifcZIP workflows.

Its strongest advantage is the depth of its IFC-focused toolset beyond basic viewing. Users can export IFC data as ifcXML and ifcZIP, validate IFC schemas, extract data with querying syntax, strip models, and load federated models. The Windows application also includes a BCF production and viewing plugin, with additional workflows for COBie, mvdXML, and NBS DPoW available through optional plugins. This makes Xplorer a practical fit for technical model inspection and data-oriented IFC workflows rather than visual presentation alone.

Choose xBIM Xplorer when open-source access, IFC control, and developer-oriented model analysis matter more than presentation features. Its Windows and web availability gives teams two ways to access models, while the free plan removes a software purchase from the initial evaluation. However, it is not the right choice for teams that depend on verified measurement, annotation, presentation-mode, or sharing-access capabilities. Those needs call for a viewer whose published feature set explicitly covers them. For IFC specialists working with validation, querying, exports, stripping, federation, and BCF, Xplorer offers a focused toolset without commercial licensing.
