Wren review
A capable free Mac reference manager for private, annotation-heavy research.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
Wren is a free, open-source reference manager for researchers who want papers, PDFs, notes, annotations, and bibliographic metadata stored locally. Its macOS app follows a Zotero-style library model, with PDF and EPUB reading, collections, tags, smart filters, duplicate detection, and broad reference import and export. A Chrome connector adds reference, PDF, and web-snapshot capture, making Wren a fit for privacy-focused Mac users managing research material in one local library.
Its strongest area is document handling. Wren supports PDF highlights, area annotations, notes, drawings, and shapes, while full-text and semantic search help users navigate larger collections. On-device OCR, layout analysis, and table extraction extend the library beyond basic citation storage. Optional AI features can assist with metadata extraction and document structuring, with connections available for OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, Ollama, and oMLX. The local REST API and wren:// deep links also provide an integration path for custom workflows, while iCloud Drive, Dropbox, Google Drive, and OneDrive are listed integrations.
Wren is most suitable for macOS researchers who value local storage, open-source software, and detailed PDF work over broad device coverage or team features. It supports BibTeX, BibLaTeX, and CSL-JSON workflows, including BibLaTeX with files, but its current scope is narrower than a fully cross-platform research suite. Mobile apps are not part of the current platform offering, and it does not provide word-processor support or collaboration. Researchers who need shared libraries, mobile access, or a mature multi-platform workflow should choose an alternative; users centered on private, local research organization will find Wren the better fit.
