WebODM is free, open-source photogrammetry software for processing aerial and ground images. It is designed for teams working with drone mapping, survey imagery, terrain data and 3D outputs who want local, offline or self-hosted deployment options. The software runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, and also provides web access, processing nodes on separate machines and a REST API for project, task and asset workflows. Its output range covers georeferenced orthophotos and orthomosaics, dense point clouds, digital surface and terrain models, textured 3D models, contours and Gaussian splats.

The strongest fit is its breadth within a free installation. WebODM combines ground control point workflows with volume and area measurements, multispectral calculations for NDVI, VARI and GNDVI, and exports for AutoCAD, Shapefile and GeoPackage. CUDA GPU acceleration can support processing on compatible hardware, while the API gives teams a path to automate project, task and asset workflows. These capabilities make it more suitable for recurring mapping and analysis work than a narrow tool focused only on image viewing or a single export type.

Deployment choice is central to the buying decision. Teams can run WebODM locally, including offline workflows, or use self-hosted infrastructure and separate processing nodes. That control suits organizations managing their own imagery and computing environment, but it is less suitable for teams that want a fully hosted service without managing installation or infrastructure. Optional hosted processing through WebODM Lightning is separate. Choose WebODM when free, open-source access, broad photogrammetry outputs and automation matter; consider another option when a hosted-first workflow is the priority.

WebODM pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Generates orthophotos, point clouds, elevation models and textured 3D models
    • Supports GIS and CAD exports, measurements and ground control points
    • Runs locally or self-hosted with CUDA acceleration and a REST API
  • Where it doesn't
    • Optional hosted processing is separate from the core software
    • Its broad feature set may exceed the needs of basic image mapping
    • Local and self-hosted deployment may not suit teams seeking a fully hosted workflow
