vSMTP review
A free, open-source MTA for operators who need scripted SMTP routing and filtering.

vSMTP is an SMTP mail transfer agent and email gateway from viridIT, aimed at operators who need control over how email is routed and filtered. Its open edition is free under an open-source license and can serve as a pure MTA, a secured front end, or a mass-email sender. That makes it relevant to teams building mail infrastructure rather than people looking for an end-user inbox. It is available for Linux and self-hosted deployment, with a modular architecture also designed for cloud deployment.
The product's strongest distinction is its filtering depth. Routing and filtering scenarios are written in its scripting language, and vSMTP can analyze SMTP envelope data as well as inspect MIME content. Filtering can modify messages or apply encryption rules. Native plug-ins and an API provide integration paths, while the microservices-based architecture supports deployments that divide functionality into modules. These capabilities suit operators who want policy and routing logic inside the mail transfer layer; they also imply a more infrastructure-focused setup than a mailbox product. Buyers should evaluate whether scripting and operating an MTA fit their team's skills and responsibilities.
The Open edition includes the open-source license, SMTP and MIME filtering, and the MTA, secured-front-end, or mass-sender roles. Commercial support is available separately. vSMTP is not positioned as a mailbox server: it does not offer webmail, IMAP/POP3 access, or mobile sync. Choose it when mail routing, message inspection, and configurable filtering are the core requirements. Choose a different product if users need inboxes, client access protocols, or mobile mailbox synchronization as part of the same system.
