Viewnior review
A focused, free Linux viewer for everyday browsing, slideshows, and basic edits.

Viewnior is a lightweight desktop photo viewer for GNU/Linux, designed for straightforward browsing rather than full photo management. It suits Linux users who want fullscreen viewing, slideshows, image navigation, and basic image actions in a focused desktop application. Users can rotate, flip, crop, save, and delete images, browse only selected images, set images as desktop wallpaper, and configure mouse actions. Animation support and EXIF/IPTC metadata display extend its usefulness beyond a minimal file viewer.
The application’s main strength is its narrow, practical workflow. Fullscreen viewing and slideshows cover quick inspection and presentation, while the image navigation window supports movement through a collection. Viewnior can load image formats through GDK-PixBuf, display metadata, and handle animated images. Its free, open-source model and GPLv3 license make it suitable for Linux users who prefer software available as source code and through Linux distribution packages. For simple viewing, lightweight editing, and wallpaper tasks, the feature set stays focused without adding cataloging or asset-management complexity.
Viewnior is less suitable for photographers who need a broader review or organization toolkit. RAW workflows, side-by-side comparison, contact sheets, and color management are not part of the established feature set. Windows and macOS are not supported, and the application is tested under GNU/Linux only. The official site lists version 1.8 as the available source release, dated 21 November 2021, while the GitHub repository was archived on 9 July 2025. Choose Viewnior for simple Linux viewing and slideshow workflows; choose a broader photo application when platform coverage, advanced format handling, or deeper image-management features matter.
