A focused Lua engine for desktop and web games, with live reload and a command-line workflow.

Usagi Engine is a free, open-source 2D engine for making pixel-art games with Lua 5.5. Its command-line workflow covers project setup and development, while exports target Linux, macOS, Windows and the web. The vendor describes it as suited to rapid prototyping, beginners and small projects, making it a fit for Lua developers focused on desktop or browser games rather than teams seeking a broad multi-platform production engine.
Development tools center on a compact set of practical features. Live reload updates code and assets during development, and Lua table save/load functions support game state persistence. A built-in pause menu provides audio controls and keyboard or gamepad remapping. The tools window includes a jukebox, tile picker, save inspector and color palette. Together, these features support a small 2D workflow without requiring a separate visual scripting system; scripting is in Lua 5.5, and visual scripting is not included.
The main trade-off is platform and project scope. Usagi exports to desktop and web, but does not target mobile; console export is also absent. The vendor says the engine is not designed for VR or medium-to-large polished games, so developers with those goals should look elsewhere. Usagi is free software dedicated to the public domain, and support is community-based. That combination makes it a straightforward option for solo developers and small teams who want a free Lua toolset for pixel-art prototypes, but a poor fit when mobile or console releases, multiplayer tools, or larger-production needs are central.
