Universe Sandbox is a desktop physics-based space simulator from Giant Army for people who want to create, alter, and observe cosmic systems. It models real-time N-body gravity, planet and star collisions, planetary climate and temperature, stellar evolution, and supernovae. Users can also experiment with terraforming, material composition, procedurally generated planets and galaxies, historical spacecraft events, and astronomical events. The product runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux via Proton, and includes optional virtual-reality support on compatible desktop systems.

Its main strength is the breadth and depth of its simulation focus. A single environment supports experiments involving orbital systems, planetary properties, climate, materials, stellar change, and catastrophic events. Historical spacecraft simulations add an educational angle, while guides and tutorials give learners a structured entry point. Steam Workshop sharing extends the experience beyond individual experiments by allowing simulations to be shared with other users. These capabilities make it a strong fit for curiosity-driven exploration, classroom-style demonstrations, and users who want to examine how changing one part of a system affects another.

Universe Sandbox is less suited to people looking for a conventional astronomy app centered on identifying objects in the night sky or supporting observation sessions. Its desktop-only scope also excludes users seeking a released mobile experience, and its Early Access status may matter to buyers who prefer fully released software. Choose it for interactive gravity, climate, collision, terraforming, and stellar-evolution experiments; choose another type of astronomy app if sky identification or mobile access is the priority.

Universe Sandbox pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Real-time simulations cover gravity, collisions, climate, and stellar evolution.
    • Supports Windows, macOS, and Linux, with optional virtual-reality mode.
    • Guides, tutorials, and Steam Workshop sharing support exploration and learning.
  • Where it doesn't
    • It is listed as Early Access software.
    • The focus is simulation rather than sky identification or observation.
    • It is a desktop product, with no released mobile version.
