For researchers, historians and members of the public tracing UK central government websites, the UK Government Web Archive provides a free way to find and view preserved web material. The National Archives collects websites and some social media accounts, then makes archived captures available through search and browsing tools. An A–Z directory offers another route into the collection, while capture timelines show when snapshots are available. This is a focused public archive, rather than a general-purpose service for preserving any website on demand.
Search is a particular strength: users can look up archived websites by URL or search the archive’s text, then narrow results by website, keyword and archive year. Each result can lead to dated snapshots, and a browser bookmarklet can check archived versions from a live government website. Search results can be exported in CSV, JSON or NDJSON, with up to 10,000 results per search. Memento compliance may also help it fit into workflows that use that standard. These tools suit research that depends on locating and comparing historical government material, though the archive’s collection scope remains limited to central government sites and some social accounts.
The main caveat is what an archived page represents: the National Archives describes captures as representations of what crawlers could access, not complete working copies or backups of original sites. The archive collects material centrally; user URL submission for capture is not documented, so it is not a fit for teams that need to request preservation of arbitrary pages. Public access and an online form for takedown requests define its preservation model. Choose it for searching existing UK government captures; look elsewhere if you need broad web coverage or control over what gets captured.
